Default NFL could expand to 34 teams says Goodell

ArashMarkazi Arash Markazi
Huge development. RT @ESPN Roger Goodell says 34 teams are likely if NFL adds franchise in L.A. es.pn/yjz7a6

INDIANAPOLIS -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says if the NFL puts a team in Los Angeles, it is probable the league would expand to 34 franchises.

Appearing Thursday night on "Costas Live" on NBC Sports Network, Goodell says the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams." He said if a suitable stadium is built in the Los Angeles area, "we probably don't want to go to 33" teams by adding just one new club. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems.

There has been speculation an LA stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell did not address that with host Bob Costas.

Goodell says there are several issues that must be solved in LA, particularly which of two current stadium proposals is best. He didn't suggest any timetable for returning to Southern California.

Hmm. So if this actually happens which 2 unlucky divisions expand to 5 teams? I don't even want to think about how the scheduling would change so the 2 bloated divisions could face each rival twice.

International franchise as well as LA perhaps? Although I don't honestly see how it would work if it was London, but Canada and Mexico have both had games recently.

Although I didn't get into the sport until around 03/04, I hear the Texans' expansion rules were tougher because of how well Baltimore did off the back of their expansion, do people think any expansion teams will have it as hard as Houston has again or will they make it a little easier again?

Baltimore was only an expansion by technicality. Realistically they are the Cleveland Browns just moved to a new city. The only thing new was the city and the name, they kept all their contracted players.

You're thinking Carolina and Jacksonville. They came out on fire as true expansion teams.

Canada has its own professional football league so, London or Mexico may have better chance landing one of NFL team IMO. Now, that is if there ever be an international franchise.

Expand? The player talent is diluted enough already. Expansion is a bad idea IMO.

Considering you have multiple cities that struggle to support their teams, this is dumb. Mexico? Too much devotion to futboll. Just a bad idea.

They could just go to 2 divisions of 17 teams: AFC and NFC. You play each team in your division once for 16 games. Then if they want to go to 18, they could match you up against the team in the other division who finished in the same spot the year before and then one game against your geographic rival. (I.E. Giants-Jets, 49ers-Raiders, Texans-Cowboys, etc).

My thoughts exactly. Maybe when they convert to full flag football the league will be ready to expand to 50 teams, but until then, this is a horrible idea and indicative of the greed permeating the NFL owners.

No doubt. And I'm sure American players will just love the boos Mexicans love to toss around for our national anthem. Screw Mexico City. Let them keep the simpleton sport of soccer. It makes rioting much easier.

If any league can afford to expand it's the NFL.

I disagree that the talent is diluted. There are tons of UDFA guys that turn into legit NFL players...some turn into stars...

Lots of Late round draft picks as well...

To me that demonstrates how much talent is in the NFL. Any team can be beaten by another in any given week. It's happened plenty of times. There were probably 10 teams this year that could have legitimately won the Championship.

Quite a few talented teams didn't make the play-offs or had a "bad year"...Lots of teams are bad one year and with some changes are good the next...

Exspansion would also creates more jobs for players, coaches and the residents of those cities...

Plus, it's just more football to watch....

I'm completely in favor of expansion and I see no downside to it to be honest.

Default Re: NFL expands to 34 teams?

Is this just a move by the NFL to allay the fears of the fans in the cities who are candidates to move to LA, and give them a little 'security' to make sure they buy season tickets for next year?

Didn't the Oilers lose all their support when it was announced they were leaving? Maybe its just the NFL trying not to let the cat out the bag.

I'd have thought the league as a whole would have at least 2 franchises, Buffalo and Jacksonville who they'd love to get moved for profitability reasons??

34/2=17.
Can't divide 17 teams into divisions equally.

If this happens, it could mean the end of Divisions as we know it
...no more weak divisions
...no more division rivalries

Most likely.

I can't believe the NFL is seriously pushing a team into moving to L.A. AGAIN. Like nobody in the league's office has any clue why there isn't already a team there. Because it didn't work like 4 times already. Oh, let's also pretend L.A. (or anywhere in California, isn't that why the Chargers are upset?) has the public funds to build a stadium.

34 teams is bad news. I don't think talent is quite dilluted yet but expanding by 2 full teams might do it. Certainly moves closer towards being dilluted than not.

The way the league is set now is perfection. Anything different, more or less, would be a detriment to the game IMO.

And therein lies the problem with expansion, most especially with a expansion of TWO teams. You could lose some valiable backups in an expansion draft of that size.

Default Re: NFL expands to 34 teams?

I'm watching record stupidity in MLB right now so I guess since Goodell got re-upped he might try and put his stamp on the game even moreso than before. I wouldn't be surprised if the cities were LA and London and I would hate London getting one. (Sorry all of our overseas brothers)

Getting rid of divisions would be stupid, so I guess expect that.

How does LA and New Jersey getting teams sound? In this world it wouldn't surprise me. NJ doesn't have a team and have shown they have a stadium and can support one, right ? As the NFL knows there aren't enough teams in that area, what with the Jets, Giants, Eagles, Redskins, and Ravens. Fans over there can almost swing a dead cat and not hit an NFL team as it is.

....and let's not forget what that might do to the CBA. Strike time!!

Ok, rant over. I just will not rule out Grade A stupidity ever again.
