Colts Hire Chuck Pagano (Balt D Coord)

Just got a text from ESPN announcing this hire.

In 2001, Pagano joined Davis in the NFL as secondary coach for the Cleveland Browns. In 2003, he helped the Browns tie a franchise record for the fewest passing touchdowns allowed with 13. In 2001, the secondary accounted for 28 of the Browns' NFL-high 33 interceptions, and, in the same season, rookie cornerback Anthony Henry led the league with ten interceptions.

After leaving Cleveland in 2004, Pagano spent two seasons as defensive backs coach of the Oakland Raiders. In 2006, the Raiders' pass defensive allowed just 151 yards per game, and total defense just 285. This ranked them first and third in the league, respectively.

Pagano was named to John Harbaugh's initial coaching staff with the Baltimore Ravens on February 12, 2008.[1] He served as defensive secondary coach for three seasons. He was promoted to Defensive Coordinator on January 18, 2011, succeeding Greg Mattison who accepted a similar position at the University of Michigan.[2]

As of January 25, 2012, Chuck Pagano was named as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.[3]

Not sure how this bodes for Manning, getting a D minded head coach.

Baltimore plays more of a hybrid system. I'm sure he could coach either one, but they could make a move to the 3-4. They don't have the personnel for it though, so their draft will have to be heavily defensive. It may be worth it for the Colts to trade the top pick to the Browns for their two 1sts and a 3rd. Pick up Griffin there and start rebuilding the O-line and D-line.

Baltimore runs the 4-3 a little more than 3-4, but they are more a mixed front defense than any other team in the league.

That is a front 7 that could work. Mathis and Freeney would look great as OLBs, Angerer would be a good ILB and Diles is serviceable. Anderson would make a solid 3-4 DE. They could use another 3-4 DE and possibly a bigger nose, but they have someone running the D who could better use the available talent. He could bring Cory Redding over to man the other DE spot and maybe even Aubrayo Franklin to play NT. Then add in a couple draft picks in the ILB spot and DL and they have a very interesting D to begin with. The front 7 won't be confused for the Ravens next year but give Pagano time and he can build a very formidable D.

Just when I was thinking the Colts were on their way to mediocrity. I think Pagano is a good hire, let's see how they fill out his staff.

Didn't the Saints just sign Franklin? Is he already on the market again?

He signed a 1 year contract with NO last year. He didn't get a ton of looks and was hoping to have a big time season to get that last big pay day. He didn't impress as a 4-3 DT and would be a better 3-4 NT. He could be a bargain FA.

Freeney and Angerer would probably do well. But that's all I can see.

Robert Mathis is a free agent this year, so I don't think they would sign him to a big deal and then switch him to an OLB. The Texans had the luxury of testing Mario there before signing him to a big deal, I don't know if the Colts would be willing to do that.

Jamaal Anderson is also a free agent. He was a 1 year deal. He may re-sign for cheap given that he didn't do much this year. Drake Nevis didn't do anything this year either. Nor did Fili, and I don't see him anchoring a line at 3-4 NT.

Zac Diles? umm.... Wasn't he cut by the Rams this year?

Hey man, if they make the switch to 3-4 and that is their starting lineup, I'll be a happy Texan. They got a long ways to go and if they pick up Peyton's option, they won't have any money to sign good free agents.

I guess it depends on if Manning plays against the Colts next season. After what I heard today it doesn't look like he will be playing for them.

When Gary Kubiak began his head coaching career, he was going up against Tony Dungy, Jeff Fisher, and Jack Del Rio. Now, his AFC South competition is Chuck Pagano, Mike Munchak, and Mike Mularkey.

I'd beg to differ... particularly toward the end of the season. Although, I hope the impression that other teams have is the one you're espousing here. Might allow us to keep him for a lower price.

it also remains to be seen how he'd fit in Spagnuolo's defensive scheme - so the Saints might not be keen to resign him. That part I am not sure of.

But he was very stout - I was sorta lukewarm about him the first half of the season. But the second half of the season, he and Cam Jordan were very stout against the run.

I'd love to have him back in NO.

Has any team in the NFL had more of it's coordinators on one side of the ball hired than the Ravens have in the last decade?

Rex Ryan, Chuck Pagano, Mike Nolan, and Marvin Lewis have all been hired as head coaches.

Call me skeptical but the guy has only been a DC for one year on a team that already had a tremendous defense, he didn't have to build it, and now he's being promoted to HC. Seems premature to me.
