Default Coverage teams on punts/kickoffs excellent this year!

I was watching the game back, and just noticed how much better our coverage teams have been this year. I know Kubiak said at the beginning of the year that switching to the 3-4 would make a difference on special teams due improved athletes on the field, but we have improved dramatically in this area. I'm not a stat geek at all, but are there stats out there that would prove this? I honestly can't remember 1 big return given up by us all year. And kudos to Rackers for the extra strength he suddenly found in his legs last week. His kickoffs were very impressive.

I think last years injuries actually had a bigger impact on special teams than this years. As far as special teams goes, there weren't too many injuries to the guys who see the field there, it was all first string players going down.

And before you start flaming me, yes Hartmann went down, but as an overall thing, there weren't too many of the coverage types missing time through injury.

We all gave coach Joe a bit of a free pass last offseason despite a down year on special teams and this year he's proven that our instincts were right, and given a bit of consistency he's one of the better ST Coords in the league.

I also think we drafted some really good talent that ended up only really seeing the field on ST this year, Harris and Keo for example, Keo, for all he's been bashed on here, seems to be in on or close to the tackle a majority of the time.

There is no doubt that Keo is a really good special teams player. That alone will keep him in the league. For the most part I can't find any weaknesses at all in our coverage units.

We haven't had the greatest punters or kickoff specialists all year so the stats may not exactly reflect it, but anyone who's watched the team this year and in year's past can definitely see a major improvement.

Now if we could just have a game with no friggin' block in the back penalties on the returns. It is ridiculous how many block int he back penalties this team has racked up. It's beyond individual performance at this point.

I almost expect a penalty from us on every return now. The funny thing is I saw a stat where we're 2nd in the league in fewest penalty yards on the year. I would have NEVER thought that, but I guess we have been a lot more disciplined than most teams.

I hate our protection on punt returns. Very rarely does Jacoby get a clean catch & return. The guys defending the gunners look like they have little to no intention of stopping that gunner from getting to Jacoby.

I'm talking specifically about our "coverage" teams which means when we're kicking off or when we're punting. We're going to have to improve our return games I agree. Especially on kickoff returns. I'm just saying that despite us having punters and kickoff guys probably in the bottom half of the league in terms of efficiency we've been exceptional covering as far as I'm concerned.

Coverage success can virtually be accomplished with pure bullrush speed and strength.

Return protection is very dependent on good coaching and player technique. When the scheme does not allow the player in proper position or the player is not quick enough to adjust and place himself in proper position, it doesn't matter how much strength and straight-line speed the player possesses. When the return protection team is "beaten/out-smarted," just like is the case with a beaten OLineman, you're going to see these desperation moves.........i.e., block-in-the back and holding.
