David Carr get ready to test your arm. This is a quote on the Texas web site and I'm going to relate it to a past experience, because there may be a lot of truth in that statement.
A long time ago Fresno State had a QB by the name of Jeff Tedford (Cal Coach). Fresno State had got the name WRU, because Tedford was throwing to two guys by the names of Henry Ellard and Stephen Page. That's an awesome lineup on both sides of the line. Henry Ellard was a High Hurdler in HS. Stephen was no slouch in the speed department either. They were taught by Jim Sweeny and company how to run very precise routes. What was funny was the schools we played would go into an umbrella defense and Stepen and Henry would go streaking by them. The apparent thought of the other team's defenders was no QB could throw the ball that far. But Tedford could and did. Stephen and Henry would make the catches look easy because of their speed. I have always felt that that team was one of the best ever to play small college football. Tedford has obviously done well at coaching over the years and Henry and Stepen had outstanding careers in the NFL setting various records at times. So could Mathis turn out to be one of those kinds of guys from a small school? I think so having watched some tape of him. You have to be better than average to get away from today's NFL defenders and he has two qualities that could make that possible. He has hands and speed. Jerry Rice had hands and ran excellent routes. Routes are said to be Mathis's one fault, but that is teachable. The other two are really not. The talent is there, but will our coaching staff get the best out of him? I continue to say the biggest Texans problem is its coaching staff. So you have a positive and a negative, but I really do like what I see in this young man. Only time will tell. I could certainly see him lining up on the opposite side of AJ and creating havic for the other team if he can off of the line of scrimmage. |

I just talked to Satan. He was sitting out in my front yard drinking a pena colada. I asked him what he was doing here and he said, and I quote, "Ibar Harry just made a positive post about the Texans and hell froze over, so im bunking with you until things warm up down there"
Thanks alot Ibar :P |

Another reason I like Mathis is that David made his mark throwing to Bernard Berrian. Mathis is very similar in many respects and healthy. He has speed and hands and the ability to separate very quickly from the Defenders. Also, once the ball is in his hands he's an immediate threat to take it all the way. Berrian actually ran a lot of very short routes and added significant yardage after the catch. David is very comfortible throwing to this kind of receiver. David and Berrian had that special connection. I have yet to see David really look comfortible with his receivers in Houston, other than Miller. As I have stated in many other posts, Manning to Harrison is no fluk. You spend endless hours developing that kind of a relationship. It can not be done by playing together solely in Camps. If Mathis makes the team do not be surprised if they throw short to him and occasionally long. It would fit in with their idea of using timing routes, and they would have to be short, given the O-line play.

woo! Your on a role
. Welcome to the light side. Obi Wan would be proud.\ (hehe, you know im just jerkin your chain Ibar. I agree with what ya said though, Mathis is alot like Berrian, but faster. It would kick *** if they find a way to effectively integrate him into our regular offensive plays next season.. I dont see it happening but i just cant wait to see if Carr to Mathis is gonna be a household term) |
