Default Elliot Harrison and those Power Rankings

After an entire season of this guy not giving the Texans their due, Harrison finally posts decent comments about the Texans and more specifically J.J. Watt. He even included his thoughts on those questionable calls. He keeps us at #7.

I think the biggest thing I take away from what he posted is that it brings into perspective the loss to the Colts and the reality of why the loss was really no big deal and that the media and Colts should not be overly excited about the Colts win against the Texans. If Harrison can cut the Texans some slack... Why can't some of you?

>> Begin Post

Denver and Atlanta losses keep Houston in place, despite its surprising loss to Indy. Now that the ranking is explained, it's time to address the fact that J.J. Watt is a freaking beast. He was all over the field last Thursday. Check that. He was the best player on the field last Thursday. While Watt wouldn't say it straight up, some of those calls on him -- especially the helmet-to-helmet -- were straight baloney. Houston might be reeling after the loss, but considering they played without their top two quarterbacks, best offensive player, best defensive player, and their defensive coordinator, not to mention some ticky-tack officiating, I'm cutting this team some slack.

Duane Brown also looked like a man among boys. He dominated the left side of the field from whistle to whistle.

There were way too many good things going on in that game for me not to cut them boys on Kirby some slack.

3 questionable calls in the final 1:56.... c'mon

2 I can understand, but three.....

Like Watt said, they were called & you've got to deal with them. Forget about them & keep playing.

I also didn't see the "conservative" play calling.

I didn't see Tate or Foster fumble the ball. I didn't see Yates throw a redzone INT.

Baby steps & all that, but I think that's what this team needs right now.

We've got a lot of growing up to do & we've got to do it real fast. The Cincy & Panthers games were two in the wrong direction. The Colts game was one step forward.

I hope we continue to move forward this Sunday & on into the play-offs.

Power rankings this week are a bit off.

Why is ATL in front on us with a worst record and we beat them?

Edit: The NFL.com rankings are accurate, many of the other power rankings have ATL before us.

Here's the LINK.

Yeah, the loss to the Colts may have only cost the Texans the #1 seed. No biggie!

C'mon man... I already posted the last ten Super Bowl winners and their seeding and proved that seeding does not matter as much as you think it does. Do I have to post it again?

As early as last season the #6 seed won it all, but we are supposed to be concerned at #3? We are in and anything can happen from here.

Yeah most of the experts have us at 11, but a few still believe. I was just shocked that Elliot Harrison said such nice things about the Texans and openly stated the calls made were BS. He has been consistently critical of the Texans all season so it was shocking to me to see his comments after the loss that some here claim spells the end for the Texans.

Your stats seem to reveal that Super Bowl winners have been either #1 or #2 seeds 60% of the time.

I would say that qualifies as "win it more often".

Really?? Really DB?? You're gonna break out "real math" by suggesting 60% > 40%??

On the contrary, this actually proves that #1 seeding IS VERY MUCH SIGNIFICANT in winning it all.

Out of the last 11 Super Bowls, a #1 seed has played in the final game nine times. Those are extremely favorable odds. Because of its single elimination format, all you need is a chance to get to the dance, and there, anything can happen. And because a #1 seed's road to the Super Bowl is easier (less games, home field advantage), they are more often participants than not.

Also, instead of looking at it as a #1 seed, you can also look at it as getting a bye means great things. As the last 11 champions got a bye.

The Texans have given up both the #1 and #2 seed, thus making life for them even more difficult.

With the crucial losses to Carolina and Indy resulting in giving up the top seeds, the odds are even more against us, we'll just have to keep chugging along.

4 of the last 6 champions did not get a bye.... am I looking at something wrong?

2010 - 6 seed
2009 - 1 seed
2008 - 2 seed
2007 - 5 seed
2006 - 3 seed
2005 - 6 seed

I have to say this listing disproves your point. Each game you've pointed out has at least one participant that received a bye. Getting a bye may not always have resulted in a win but it at least seems to have resulted in at least one team (and sometimes both) getting a shot at the championship. And at the end of the day, all you can ask for is a shot.

We aren't going to get to the Super Bowl throwing the ball in the air with a hope & a prayer. Especially not with a rookie QB.

As far as I know, a rookie has never gotten to the Super Bowl.

Our best chances of getting there is to take every thing back to basics & work on improving every week.... getting better over 3 weeks (since we clinched the AFC South 3 weeks ago) is going to help us a lot more than scrambling for a win all the way through week 17, then taking a week off "to get healthy."

I'm as upset as anyone about losing 2 in a row, especially when you consider who we lost to. But if that improves our chances of winning a game or two in the post season, I'm all for it.

I think what is shows it that its pretty close, and the fact that the sample size is so small it makes the data noisy. Obviously if you do not have to play the first week it increases your odds to making it to the SB, but to say because you are not a #1 or a #2 excludes you is preposterous and like it or not that is what some here are selling.

Maybe if I have time later I will try the last 20 years and see what that looks like.

Let's be clear... Seeding is important to a degree, but not as much as some would have you believe. My point was that those who say losing to the Colts and Panthers was the end of our run and we are 1 and done because of it are wrong.

None of this discussion matters because those of you who feel that way will never be satisfied. If we do happen to get out of the first round you will say "yea but X... there is no way we beat Y next week" and if we are to win the Super Bowl you will say "Yea but look how long it took" or "Yea but without Wade this would have never happened" or "Yea but team Z had player A out"

As others have said this shows that getting a bye is important. 22 Super Bowl berths - 15 by the #1 or #2 seed. 7 by the #3 through #6 seed. Since there are twice as many 3-6 seeds as 1-2 seeds that means that a 1 or 2 seed is more than 4 times as likely to go to the Super Bowl as a 3 through 6 seed. Of course it is not impossible but it is much less likely. It fact some would even say it is "a big deal".

If we do happen to get out of the first round you will say "yea but X... there is no way we beat Y next week" and if we are to win the Super Bowl you will say "Yea but look how long it took" or "Yea but without Wade this would have never happened" or "Yea but team Z had player A out"
Complete nonsense. Some people are saying we are "one and done" (actually I have not wasted time reading those threads (Hey! my wife thinks I'm wasting time posting in this thread!)) because if we play like we did the last two games in a playoff game we will lose (sorry, I know 90% of people say "loose"). If you find a post saying "any team that is not a 1 or 2 seed is EXCLUDED from the Super Bowl" please quote it or link to it.

100% horsecrap. If we win the Super Bowl (less likely from the #3 seed than the 1 or 2 seed) people will be happy. (Although I don't see why you consider that pointing out that Wade is important to the team's success is a negative).

I think you can safely tell your wife that the first quote I excerpted from your post made it a worthwhile use of your time.
