Alright, this mock may be a little outdated. I finished it last night, so I dont exactly know what to do about QB. Anyway, hope you guys like it.

1) Memphis NT Dontari Poe, 6’5” 350 lbs
Like the rest of the scouting community (at least it seems that way), I am joining the Poe to the Texans bandwagon. I had him ranked as a 2nd/3rd at the start of the year, but with no other NTs stepping up and Poe playing very well, I think he is worth a late first. A big guy who moves like he weighs 50 pounds less than he is, Poe can occupy two lineman, and perhaps even create a little push. At 6’5” Poe serves as a skyscraper in the QBs line of sight, which helps shut down the short passing game across the middle.


2) Oklahoma OLB Ronnell Lewis, 6’2” 245 lbs
The Hammer. Lewis provides insurance in case Mario leaves (which I think he does- salary issues), leaving the team with 3 dynamic pass rushers at OLB. Lewis can also play on special teams, meaning he will immediately see the field while earning the intricacies of OLB.


3) San Diego State QB Ryan Lindley, 6’4” 230 lbs
Schaub is down, and Leinart… well, let’s say he does not inspire much confidence. Maybe he plays well, but if so he leaves in search of a starting job. Lindley has pro size, a pro arm, and pro mobility. What he needs is to play around talent and learn how to read a defense a little better. If he sits for a year I think Lindley can be an upper-tier starting QB in the future.


4) Oklahoma WR Ryan Broyles, 5’11” 185 lbs
Broyles has been put in so many mocks this year that I wont write anything more, other than say that he is a player.


5) South Dakota LT Tom Compton, 6’6” 315 lbs
A small-school LT with great athleticism, Compton becomes the new swing tackle. If he can get his technique down while adding a bit of strength, Compton could move Brown inside or to RT. A negative on Compton is that he does not play overly mean; hopefully practicing against Cushing can help him out there.

6) UConn OC Moe Petrus, 6’2” 305 lbs
A bit old for a rookie, Petrus can be the backup right away, and be a starter once Myers leaves. His mobility is outstanding, and displays solid technique.


7) Michigan DE Ryan van Bergen, 6’6” 290 lbs
Van Bergen is little more than a poor man’s Watt. And I am seeing enough while watching Michigan that perhaps with NFL coaching and training that he can be another Watt. Van Bergan plays strong on the line of scrimmage, and is a threat to reach the passer if left to only one blocker.


I feel that this mock gives the team what it needs to make a true Super Bowl push- A strong NT to solidify the line, a rush OLB to help put pressure on the QB, a backup QB, A number 2 or 3 receiver to capitalize in the space provided by AJ, a swing tackle, a backup interior lineman and a new member to the 3-4 DE rotation.

I like Poe. Wouldn't throw a fit if we drafted him, but I'm more interested in Brandon Thompson from Clemson.

Lewis is definitely a dynamic player. He won't be available at our selection in the second round though.

I think Lindley is a real sleeper in this draft. I think he projects as one of the better pro QB prospects in this draft class.

Great pick here with Broyles.

I'm not familiar with Compton.

Petrus is a very solid late round pick. He would make the roster.

Van Bergen definitely has a future as a 34 DE in the NFL. I think the poor man's Watt is a perfect comparison.

I would be on board with this draft big time. Great work.

Lienert is under contract 2012 & I doubt he goes anywhere unless we get a sweet offer. We are stuck with 2 Matt's and a Yates.

I have to agree with this. If the Texans continue to win, even with TJ, and the O-line keeps playing the way they have, Brown could be going to the Pro-Bowl, along with Myers and Winston! Now wouldn't that be something!

I wasn't sold on picking Poe myself, you taking him too helped make me feel a little better about it.

I know you like Lewis, if he's there that would be cool with me.

smart move to add a value pick @ QB position given uncertainty.

we agree again on a player, surprise surprise.

with importance of keeping our QB's clean depth on OL is important. don't know much about small school Compton but your the expert here. like Petrus very solid pick.

Remember Tim Jamison playing @ Michigan have no problem taking another one late, he is playing extremely well lately.

If I could leave as many of your picks in place as they are, I would change up your 1st & 3rd rd. picks. take a QB in first & NT in the third. You know I would trade up for Barkley but for mock draft purposes I will limit choices to Kellen Moore or Landry Jones. Third round NY prospects would be Jaye Howard, 6-3 303 Florida or Michigan NT Mike Martin, 6-1 304.

Does anyone have a link to some video of Poe, all I can find on YouTube is interviews? Without video all I have to go by are comments and opinions and although I trust several of you guys opinions and am warming up to the idea of Poe in the 1st I can't fully agree until I can see the guy in action for myself. Thanks.

I'll take that comparison with a pound of salt. Comparing a 350 lbs. player with a 287 lbs. player? I haven't seen Poe play but I doubt seriously that he has Jay Ratliff type speed. I'll keep looking for some video and post it if I find it.

Google is great, but apparently there are no playing videos of Poe on the net. I've seen lots of interviews and weight lifting but no action. When I can find video of every other player out there on the net and can only find interviews and weight lifting on Poe, it sets off a red flag to me. Why are they building a hype machine with no action videos. I'm cautious and can't support a Poe in the 1st round pick if I can't see him play. I think the Combine will be very important for him and might solidify him as a top talent or drop him significantly.

I would not say fervent, but I did like Wilson better than KJ. Still do, actually.

Yep, I liked Gerhart a lot better than Tate, and it appears I was wrong. I have no problem admitting that, and have done so multiple times on this board. In fact, I am on record saying Tate was my second favorite back in the draft, so it is not like I thought Tate was terrible. I just thought that Gerhart would prove to be a better back in this system. I still think that could be the case, but we will never know. That is the interesting part about the draft- you can never tell who would do what if placed in a different situation. Look at Babin- the dude could not sniff a QB here, while he is doing very well in Philly and Tennessee.

All in all, sorry I am not batting 100%. I guess that is why I am not paid to do this, and only do it as a hobby. Go tell the NFL team that you work for that I am sorry, and will never do it again.

EDIT: Forgot to address the snorting "coc" thing. I did not like Smith in this defense. I still dont. In SF he is a pass down player only. In Watt we have a 3-down player. Also, I saw that there were more rush OLBs available later in the draft, than there were 3-4 DEs. Watt was a better pick for the Texans.

That was me J-Russ. Glad you are joining the forum. I've been looking for some of the research you have shared with the board? Or do you just show up occasionally, trash another poster and slink off? BTW, classy comments about the stripper.

I thought Tate was good but really thought Gerhart had the power to break tackles that we were looking for in the ZBS we ran. I still think he is a perfect fit. He has been playing behind someone & we still have not seen all he can do. I was also a huge fan of Kyle Wilson.

I'd like to see Gerhart in a featured role. When he was in college there were points were it seemed like it would take the whole defense to bring him down. He wasn't fast, he wasn't flashy but boy could he go tank mode and just roll over people!!

BTW, I like the combo of Watt/Reed over Smith. Didn't like eiither KJ or Wilson. My guy was the CB from Wake Forest who's been cut. Shows what I know, jruss why dont you go back thru my picks and rip them apart. You're a real peach.

If you want to post your own mock for the rest of the MB to see it would be appreciated. But I dont think we will have to worry about that.

I think jruss was just trying to fill everyone with his blend of holiday cheer & he probably got his desired results

I will say one thing about these selections, sometimes they are based too much on team need. when you do that often times you get in trouble, case in point two years ago everyone & there cousin knew the Texans were going to draft a CB, which they did, so they reached for who they thought was the best CB on their draft board. Lesson learned, I hope because this year it's WR. Are the Texans going to repeat that same mistake?

I really dont see a WR I like in the first. Blackmon, Jeffery and Floyd will likely go too high. Then the next tier guys I have ranked mid to low second. They all have flaws that I think will prevent them from being worthy of a first round pick.

I still really like Poe in the first. However, maybe we go WR in the second (McNutt/Toon/Fuller), and go from there.

Agreed. I'd really like a trade back to get my guy but doubt it will happen. I know whom I want to see on Texans and think he will be gone by our pick so I'll tag him in first probably.

IMO, Jones is worthy of a mid 20's 1st round pick, he's got the size, speed, hands, body, and athleticism to be a 1st round pick. I also know that we have depth needs at many positions but think that we could go BPA after a WR in the 1st round. I also wouldn't be upset if the Texans concentrated on the O-line in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, it's way past time we spent some early picks on the O-line and improved our talent level there. This draft seems to be stronger and deeper on the offensive side of the ball and I think we should not force filling defensive positions with subpar talent just because it's a need. We've got defensive starters so go where the value is, BPA.
