"Once there was a player that came out of college with the wind at his back. The media loved him, and most thought he was destined to make his mark on the NFL.
After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, he spent years struggling to prove himself, until his team did what some losing teams do, they finally gave up on him. His popularity was all but gone. Although this was the lowest moment of his career, a former quarterback, and former quarterback coach and offensive coordinator by the name Gary Kubiak saw potential in the struggling player. Gary saw talent no one else seemed to appreciate. He saw that he had the ability to run his variation of the west coast offense, and when he became the starter, he went on to lead his team to the playoffs not once, not twice, but three consecutive years in a row. No, I'm not making a prediction, although history has a strange way of repeating itself. It's not a prediction because that struggling player in my story wasn't Leinart. That struggling quarterback was Jake 'The Snake' Plummer. You see, Gary has done this before!" LINK TO ARTICLE, COMMENT BELOW THAT (I found this in the comments section of the Barnacle, and felt it worthy of it's on thread, if not, feel free to merge it with the other Leinart threads please.)

I completely forgot about that with Plummer. However, one could argue that Plummer had already taken a bad Cardinals team to the playoffs and beat Dallas. But I do agree that Gary knows what he is doing this time.

It depends on which team offered a bigger check to Deion Sanders.

Several injuries (shoulder/knee/etc) rendered him less effective after that season, however. The Broncos elected to save some 6M plus and let him go a couple of years later. Entered Jake Plummer. |

Not to be a downer but Kubiak also saw talent in Orlovsky and Grossman as well as David Carr to get his head coaching job with the Texans. He unveiled Chris Brown against the Titans after a bye week. This year he and Smith traded for Mason instead of a much better Brandon Lloyd.
To his credit he gave us Sage Rosenfels who was the best backup qb the Texans have had to date. I hope Kubiak has turned Leinert around. The guy has the talent to be an NFL qb and I really liked him coming out of USC but its between his ears where he has struggled. But this is exactly the kind of guy I think Kubiak can turn around. He has all the talent but needs some serious mentoring. Kubiak has been at it for almost 2 full years with him so it is no excuses time for Leinert and Kubiak. Hopefully Leinert turns out to be Kubiaks best patient. Can't wait until this Sunday. Go Texans!

To be fair, I believe the Texans traded for Mason BEFORE the rumor or Lloyd being on the market surfaced... there was no "instead"...

All kidding aside, orlovsky was a mistake. But, Grossman is starting in the NFL even if it is not smart, but is still starting. Chris Brown and Brandon Lloyd are a WR and RB which doesn't play into Kubiaks ability to do a turn around a qb. So I would say he has failed on two QB projects(orlovsky and HWWNBM), succeeded in one (rosenfels), and has gotten a push in Grossman. I say he is due. |

I know Mason is 37 but he should be thrown to more often.

His role on this team seems more as a mentor. I've noticed a jump in Jacoby Jones since Texans signed him. I wish they had kept Aaron Glen for same reason back in the day.

Wasn't Kubiak Steve Young's QB coach the year Young and the 49ers won the Super Bowl? Hmm wonder how much development Kubiak had in Steve Young's career?

He still has a chance for a thousand career catches and I would like to see him get that.

If I remembered correctly, when I was a young lad watching Jake Plummer in Arizona, I always thought that he wasn't a good fit in the Arizona system hence is why he didn't succeed.... He was a very mobile QB and I thought that he needed to go to a team that ran the WCO. At time before the Texans came I was a Broncos follower and I thought that Jake Plummer would be a perfect fit in the Broncos with this mobility. The biggest knock on Jake Plummer is that he couldn't take care of the ball in crunch time.... sounds familar? |
