Another hypothetical though. What if he does do really well and the Texans clinch a playoff berth with a couple of games left? Do you let Leinart continue to go out there so he gets more reps against NFL defenses or do you rest him and let Yates start the last game or two? Hopefully this scenario actually happens.
This is a tough call. You'd like to see Leinart get as much work with the #1 offense as possible, but you also can't risk him getting hurt. I think you play Yates in this scenario.

Not a tough call at all.

If the goal is to get to the play-offs, then you put Yates in there & waste valuable snaps against a real NFL defense.

If the goal is to go as far as you can, to achieve as much as you can, you leave Leinart in the game. Winning doesn't just happen, players & coaches make it happen.

Perfecting our execution in a real game with all the variables, surprises... real life situations is critical to our long term goals.

This is the right answer.
There is no "IF".
The goal is to make the playoff picture as favorable for your team as possible; i.e., Go as far as you can.
So you play your starters until the playoff math says you cannot get a higher seed. When you've clinched the no. 1 or 2 seed with a game, maybe two, left, only then do you think about giving Yates some reps. And if it were me in Kubiak's position, Leinart would start those games too.

Yep, man needs reps. I understand the desire to be careful and not get him injured but he needs reps. Maybe not every snap of whatever post-clinch games are left but he doesn't need any down time.
