Default Cowboys May be Looking for Some More Tail

Cowboys may have only two tailbacks on Sunday night
Posted by Mike Florio on October 28, 2011, 1:14 PM EDT

Though it’s unknown whether rookie DeMarco Murray’s 253-yard effort from last weekend will move him up from No. 3 on the depth chart, he’ll continue to be the lead dog on Sunday night in Philly, when the Cowboys face the Eagles.

Starter Felix Jones continues to be hampered by a high ankle sprain, and Tashard Choice is expected to be questionable with a dislocated shoulder suffered last week against the Rams.

According to the team’s official website, Murray (pictured) and Phillip Tanner may be the only two tailbacks who’ll play this week.

The Cowboys don’t have another running back who could be elevated from the practice squad. Barring the highly unlikely decision to sign a guy off the street (Brian Westbrook, anyone?), it will be Murray and Tanner on Sunday night.
DeMarco Murray was quite impressive last week. BUT, it was against the RAMS!...........DEAD LAST NFL RUSHING DEFENSE. The Cowboys better hope that they can count on Romo's noodle.

Rush offenses vs rush defenses.

Quote:
The Eagles’ rush defense, shredded through the season’s first five weeks that had them ranked consistently in the bottom five of the league, got a lot of credit for the Eagles’ pre-bye 20-13 win over the Redskins.

In the win over Washington, the Eagles allowed just 42 yards rushing.

“It was a good step, but we have to continue to keep that focus,” said Patterson. “The more time with each other, the more time to feel each other out. That’s what it came down to, team chemistry. We have a lot of new guys on defense. Guys, we’re trying to do what we do, but we have to jell together. Everybody is trying to learn how each other is playing, stuff like that.”

The Eagles’ run defense is up to 23rd in the league, surrendering an average of 123.8 yards per game. Not nearly as gaudy as Dallas’ ranking of sixth, allowing just 69.7 yards per game via the rush.

Conversely, the Eagles are ranked No. 1 in the league in rushing offense (170 yards per game) while the Cowboys are 13th in rushing offense (119.7 ypg) even after Murray’s magnificent game.

Choice has just been released with an LB (not an RB) placed on the roster in his stead.

Getting over 200 yards in any NFL game is very impressive regardless of what team it is against. Good for Murrey.
