Default Deep Passing Where is Schaub ranked?

Signature Stats Snapshot: Deep Passing

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog...-deep-passing/

One thing that stood out to me is there are only 2 QBs that have not thrown a INT with the deep pass & Schaub is 1 of them.

Default Re: Deep Passing Where is Schaub ranked?

I guess 20 yards is "Deep" in todays NFL .... Not really my definition of a deep ball but .... close enough.

As for where Schaub ranks , in the bottom of the top 1/3rd ..... Thats about where I would expect him to be. This team does make its share of big plays ....

I think there are more telling stats we could examine when it comes to Schaub and the Texans ..... 3rd down efficiency and game on the line drives coming to mind (Final two minutes of a half or game).

Schaub had really good zip on the td to Jacoby last week. Usually his deep balls sail amd WRs have to slow down for them. I wonder where that extra velocity cane from?

Well to be fair he actually had time to plant his foot and square his hips before he threw.. he does have decent strength and power when he has time to do his three second release countdown.

I think when Schaub sets his feet and makes a full motion throw, he can get it about 30-35yds with decent zip and hit someone in stride...anything more than that is probably out of his range, which isn't all that bad...but if he doesn't get to properly set his feet with a follow thru, then that range will drop...he just doesn't have the strength which we all know, but not many QBs that can make those throws are accurate...but I do understand that even if you launch it long, you at least give the WR a chance to run and get it.

I was surprised as all get out that that ball was place perfectly ahead of the receiver.

had JJ had to stop to get that ball, we'd have been 1st & goal inside the 10 & had to settle for a field goal.

Kudos to Schaub on a perfect deep ball.

That DB is usually beat inside the first 20 yards. If Schaub can anticipate his guy breaking free & get the ball out earlier, 30-35 yards isn't bad at all.

However, I will say they Ravens were giving us so much cushion, there were several times when our receivers weren't open even after the 25 yard line. With Ed Reed back there, I wouldn't have been making a bunch of those throws either.

If you are looking for more fodder for your "game time adjustments" arguements, this is one of them. It wasn't until the third Qtr that I even saw a 20+ yard route (kinda hard to tell on TV). & that first drive of the third Qtr.. probably one of our best drives of the year, we were playing vertically, we attacked the middle, deep-middle. had them on their heels......

then we started playing small ball again.

IMO, if we'd have started to stretch the field earlier & noticed their DBs playing so deep, we could have called some deep hooks or crossing routes.

There was a lot of inexperience in their #2 & #3 CBs that we didn't take advantage of.

Yeah Schaub can't even come close to throwing over 40 yards.

Signed,

It's Matt's own fault. If he didn't "prefer" to under throw the deep ball (like no other QB prefers to) we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Best receiver in the league can't get more than 9 TDs a year when he gets behind the defense 9 times a game.

Probably was laughing his ass off thinking "who left him open like that?"

Schaub's deep balls this year have been pretty much $$$$ this year.

Yup. The only thing that I notice as far as arm strength is that when he's running, that goes out the window and he's been running away from the pocket quite a bit this year. That's not him, his game is standing tall and throwing strikes down the field. You give him that time, it'll be all she wrote. Make him run and you get these bad paper airplane balls that dive for the ground...

I know it's too early in the season to tell. But so far this season, the toughest pass rushes we've faced has been Oakland's (currently ranked 8th with 16 sacks in 6 games), Baltimore's (10th, 15 sacks, 5 games) & Pittsburgh's (10th, 15 sacks, 6 games)

The most dangerous team remaining on our schedule in that department is Cincy (13th, 14 sacks, 6 games).

Cleveland is 17th right now, with 13 sacks over 5 games

Tennessee & Jax are both ranked at @ 19 with 11 sacks, Tits in 5 games, Jax in 6

Atlanta & Tampa are both at 22 with 10 sacks in 6 games

The Panthers & Colts are at 25 with 9 sacks in 6 games.

I know sacks are not the end all be all as far as QB pressures go, but I don't have access to a site that tracks hits & pressures.

I think it was Saint's game in preseason he rolled out to right threw one to AJ that went 57 yrds in the air. I rewatched it about 5 times to make sure that's what I saw.

The sweetest pass to me is when Schaub play actions and sells it. He often is all by himself as he launches the ball. IMO he is best in league at that but does not call it as often as I'd like, of course.

he doesn't have a rocket arm but sometimes i just don't see the touch he needs on the quick tosses. seems like when he throws a quick slant its never where our wr can catch in stride and fall forward. red zone anyone? i think he has a nice game 10-40 yds down field. cant really go over the top but not accurate within 10 yds from line of scrimmage. i was waiting on a quick slant or get rid of it on final play vs oakland. i swear we had two plays to get in.
maybe its just me and i'm a hater but it seems like our wr's have to work to catch the ball or its flat out uncatchable. remember that game at zona like two yrs ago. i think it was dressen wide open at the back of the endzone and schaub threw too high. all he needed was a little touch and td, but nope
