Default Bob Speaks the Truth vs. S.O.T. Lip-service?

Texans owner Bob McNair has a message for his coaches and players as they prepare to play the Tennessee Titans for first place in the AFC South.

"It's time to stand and deliver," McNair said.

After a 2-0 start, the Texans (3-3) have lost three or four, including the last two, but they have a chance to move into first place if they can win on Sunday at LP Field, where they have a 2-7 record.

The Titans (3-2) are coming off their open date.

"It's not a must-win game, but it kind of has that feeling," cornerback Johnathan Joseph said. "It's a division opponent and a road game. To be good in this league, you have to win on the road."

After finishing 5-3 on the road in 2009, the Texans have gone 3-8, including 1-2 this season.

"We're not hiding any secrets," outside linebacker Connor Barwin said. "We need to win. They're half a game ahead of us, which makes it more important.

"It's a huge game. I think we all understand what's at stake."

The Titans have a new coach in Mike Munchak. He was elevated to replace Jeff Fisher, who resigned after 17 years.

"They're the same Titans; they're playing nasty like they always do," tight end Joel Dreessen said.

Dreessen was one of the many players who participated in the dirtiest game in this series. The last time the Texans won at LP Field was in 2009, when they escaped with a 34-31 victory.

That game featured fights, personal fouls and ejections. Commissioner Roger Goodell levied several fines.

Anger on the field

Some Titans, notably defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, went for Dreessen's knees in retaliation for what was perceived as a dirty play by the tight end the previous season. Offensive tackle Eric Winston became so angry he ripped off his helmet on the field and challenged Vanden Bosch to a fight.

"We had gotten our tails whipped at home by the Jets, and everyone was mad at us when we went to Tennessee," Dreessen said. "It was a bloodbath. It was a nasty, physical game.

"It's a great feeling to go through a grind like that, a battle, and it gives you a sense of achievement that you've done something."

The Texans need to do something big on Sunday to make up for losses to Oakland and Baltimore.

"This is one of those games that's big for both teams," Winston said. "It's definitely one that you circle.

"Any time you hit a little bit of a skid, you have to get out of it somehow. Winning on the road is one of the best feelings in the world. Doing it in Tennessee would be tough, (but) it would be that much sweeter to do it there."

Receiver Derrick Mason played his first eight seasons with the Titans and the last six with the Ravens.

"They're just a tough team," Mason said about the Titans. "They're just a nasty team in a good way, and that's the way you're supposed to play football. You have to have a nastiness to you.

"Regardless of (circumstances), they're always going to give you a tough fight. It's always going to be a rough one."

Kevin Walter knows the significance of gaining the upper hand on the Titans.

"This is the biggest game on the schedule so far," he said. "The past two weeks have been very disappointing, but we're still playing for first place. There's a lot on the line.

"They (Titans) are going to be fresh. They're going to be flying around at home. We've got to run the ball better, convert on third down and make plays in the red zone. That's what it's going to come down to."

'It's a tough challenge'

In a 2007 loss, quarterback Matt Schaub was knocked out of a game at LP Field with a dislocated left shoulder.

"It's a tough environment to play in," Schaub said. "It's always going to be a hard-nosed, emotional game. There are always battles between us.

"It's a tough challenge but one we're looking forward to.

"Talk is overrated at that point. There is only so much you can say. We just have to be ready to play 100 percent from start to finish."
Is this a message to Kubiak?

It should be.

I only read the bolded part. Why waste my time with the rest? McNair needs to listen to his own words.

It seems to me that most of the players sound sorta fired up at least instead of giving us this years zombie chant of one game at a time. I like seeing some people calling out the the Titans and hoping for a physical game. I know the Texans vs Titans is one of my favorite games to watch every year because you get to see some real emotions out of the Texans. I just wish they could do it every week.

As for McNair.. I don't think hes stupid and he finally gave Kubiak everything he needed to win this season. If this pattern of opening strong, utterly failing the middle, and then "rallying" behind Kubiak to win a few pointless games at the end of the season continues he will be gone I think.

Default McNair: It is time to stand up and deliver

Quote:
Houston Texans team report: McNair: 'It's time to stand up and deliver'
PUBLISHED 18 hours and 15 minutes ago
LAST UPDATED 17 hours and 57 minutes ago
John McClain Sporting News

HOUSTON — Before the season, team owner Bob McNair said he expected the Texans to not only make the playoffs but to go far in the postseason.

Now that the team has lost three of four—and two in a row— entering Sunday’s showdown at Tennessee for first place in the AFC South, McNair let his players and coaches know what he thinks about the Titans game.

“It’s time to stand and deliver,” he told the Houston Chronicle.

That message is clear: McNair expects his team to win at LP Field, which has been a house of horrors for the Texans. They are 2-7 in Nashville.

To their credit, the players haven’t called it “just another game.” The Texans (3-3) have been talking about the importance of beating a bitter rival in what they believe will be a physical game and taking a one-half game lead over the Titans (3-2), not to mention having the tiebreaker advantage because of a division win.

“It’s not a must-win game, but it kind of feels like it,” Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph said.

Notes: Joseph has been worth every bit of the $23.5 million guaranteed he received to sign as a free agent in the offseason. Joseph is off to a Pro Bowl-type start with a team-best three interceptions. He also had an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble return for a TD nullified because of penalties.

What the coaches like best about Joseph, who played his first five seasons at Cincinnati, is his speed, his coverage ability and his ball skills.

They say he’s fearless, too, and will challenge any receiver at the line of scrimmage. Opposing quarterbacks are shying away from Joseph and throwing more to the other side, where Kareem Jackson and Jason Allen are playing on a rotating basis. ...

Although the Texans won't say it, Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson (hamstring) and fullback James Casey (chest) won't start at Tennessee. Neither has practiced this week.

With all the walking wounded, I hope the team has enough players that CAN still stand up and deliver from beginning through the end of the game.

But if they lose, will McNair have quickly forgotten his own words like in the past?

It IS a must win game. THIS is the team that is standing in the way of them and the playoffs. This game is a MUST WIN and the next time they play (I believe the final regular season game) is a MUST WIN. THEY MUST WIN THIS GAME.

What I'm trying to say is....

What's the point in these comments? If they lose he'll just say the other owners gave them a participation trophy. People say Kubiak is on a hot seat, but anything short of 3-13 he'll get another year. If they go 8-8 and squeeze into the play-offs, everyone will get 9 year extensions. We are a soft team.

I'll accept it's a must win game. But the first person who mentions it's our super bowl should get negative rep from everyone.

Can it be said that it's the game that "shows what they're made of"? We haven't had one of those in like a week.

friggin' huge, huge game though. To take control of the division against the top divisional opponent is huge. Lose this game and the Titans control their own destiny, putting us in yet another situation where we need others teams help to beat the division leader to help us out. It would be a National disgrace to have the rebuilding Titans as the best team in this division. This week determines that.

Words are cheap. This forum has lots of words. Talk radio has lots of words. Anyone can put words out there.

What matters is what happens on the field between 12:00 and 3:00 on Sunday. That is where this team will prove that this game means what they say it means.

If this season is going to be The Season, then the Texans should act like it against the Titans. This game is huge as it regards the impact in the division and the rest of the season. I never advocate a 'must win' game in week 7, but this is as close as it gets to that kind of mentality.

I don't have a good feeling about this game.

My faith in the team for this year has been shattered. A win this weekend could go a long way to restoring that faith, but I'm picking us to lose.
