Houston Texans
Best pick: Being a big fan of Travis Johnson, I like the move to trade down and still end up with a guy they wanted. He's a player.

Questionable move: Third-round pick Vernand Morency was a quality running back at Oklahoma State, but is he going to beat out Tony Hollings and Jonathan Wells for time behind Domanick Davis?

Steal: Third-round pick Jerome Mathis can fly. He will help the passing game, but he is also a great return man.

Overall grade: B-. Johnson and Mathis help get this grade a bunch some.

I don't like the fact that they don't account PB into the equation. I think the Texans added some quality players at a low price in a couple of pick (PB and Mathis). TJ was about an even pick, but we needed him. Morency is older, but he can be a solid productive backup to DD which Hollings and Wells could not do. Overall we have the potential to add 4 starters from this draft by the end of the year from our draft picks. I would rate this draft is an A.

Mel Kiper's draft grade

Houston Texans: C
Defensive tackle Travis Johnson can plug the middle and is a perfect fit for Houston's defensive scheme, and despite a lack of ideal speed running back Vernand Morency has nice pure running skills. Receiver Jerome Mathis is a great fourth-round pickup if he can maintain his concentration. The rest of the group is nothing to write home about.

Don Pompei - Sporting News

Houston Texans: C+
The team sacrificed character for talent in a couple of cases. It didn't have great options in Round 1, and the selection of defensive tackle Travis Johnson reflected that.

The public, B-

ESPN's poll, with about 10,000 votes in, has B a few % points higher than C.

Could someone please tell me HOW you can grade a draft before any of the players have even attended a mini-camp?

One of my favorite articles Gosse writes each year is when he goes back and re-grades the previous years draft. You know what alot of teams that had Ds and Cs on teh Monday after the draft suddenly have As and Bs.

You cannot effictivly grade draft untill the rookies have played; and some say that you can't grade a draft unitll after teh second or third season.

You're grading based on a team's needs, and how the player will fill those needs based on their performance up to that point. Easy enough.

Can A players end up being an F? Yup. Can F player come out of no where to be an A, yup.

I agree...You simply can't grade a draft right now. It's not like these GM's are sitting around drunk and stoned when they make the picks. They are all smart people who make the picks based on what they feel is the best choice for the team at the time. Its also stupid how they sit there and almost always give the highest grades to the teams with the most picks in the top 3 rounds. How hard is it to look decent when you have 2 picks in the top 20 such as the Cowboys? Same thing when Baltimore was lauded for getting Boller...Gee...Hows that working out for ya Billick? Grading drafts is just like power rankings each week...All for the viewing public to have something to read.

Default MSNBC link refers to KC pick up of Surtain

I think we had a quality draft and agree that you cannot really grade the draft for another two-three years, but what chaps my hide is a kind of what is good for the goose is not for the gander attitude that these journalists have when it comes to the Texans. Case in point is MSNBC's grading of KC's trading of their second pick to get Surtain:

KANSAS CITY - The Chiefs made only one pick until late in the third round but still gave their defense a major shot in the arm by landing Texas' playmaking middle linebacker Derrick Johnson at No. 15 when he was considered by most to be a top-10 pick. Then they got the best player in Round 2 by trading that pick to the Dolphins the day before the draft for cornerback Patrick Surtain, who is among the half dozen best corners in the league. The Chiefs have been haunted for several years by a defense that gave up yardage in chunks and points far too quickly. To reach the playoffs, they needed to fix the problem and they took a large step in that direction and landed in Surtain something you can't draft: a verifiably proven commodity.

Howevre, they do not discuss the PB pick up by giving up our 2nd and a third.

Its because KC got the better value, a 2nd for a CB who has been to the pro bowl a few times. Doesn't sound like that bad of a deal.

I didn't think we had a dynamite draft but I sure do believe Mathis can help turn that around.

I agree that Buchanon and Surtain are a different caliber to date, my point is not getting the recognition from a draft stand point

I think it was because Surtain was traded the day before the draft and Buchanon was traded last week.

I think Surtain is the better talent, but he is nearly the twilight of his career. Buchanon is still young and full of promise. Not to mention that Surtain costs a ton more.

IMO I say we did better than a B. I mean we traded a 2nd and 3rd for PB. So we got TJ, PB, and Mathis who will make a quick impact on the team. Morency, Hodgdon, Brown, and Pettway are depth at best. Judging from what I read on Hodgdon, he's going to be a great center.
