Default Mercedes Benz Superdome - Naming rights secured

from nola.com:

New Orleans Saints sell Superdome naming rights to Mercedes-Benz

Quote:
The New Orleans Saints and Mercedes-Benz have reached an agreement on a 10-year naming rights deal for the recently renovated Superdome that officially changes the name of the iconic stadium to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The deal marks the first time in the stadium's 36-year history that the building will be known by something other than the Louisiana Superdome.

...

Although financial terms weren't available, the deal between Mercedes-Benz and the Saints is expected to guarantee the state will not pay the team any more direct subsidies.
good timing, too:

Quote:
In addition to the 10 Saints games that are played every year in the Dome as well as the annual Allstate Sugar Bowl and Bayou Classic, the building will be the site of several national sporting events in the next two years. The BCS championship game will be played there Jan. 9, the men's Final Four will be in the Dome in April and the Super Bowl comes back to New Orleans in February 2013.
As far as sponsors go, I think they could've done a lot worse. There's been speculation for quite a while and I'm pretty pleased at this announcement, considering sponsorship was an inevitability.

That's just so great. Sponsorship that the average person in New Orleans can relate to. Bravo!

Sure beats "The George Bush Super Dome Courtesy of Kanye West" I suppose.

lolololol... people in New Orleans are poor. What a novel barb!

I'm not sure what businesses get out of these arrangements, either - but I'm also not in advertising. I'm not sure that the Staples Center entices me to shop there instead of some other office supply store. I don't know that Reliant Stadium helped me decide on an electric company. And I don't anticipate buying a Mercedes just because their name is on the Superdome.

But it was going to happen and I'm glad it's not the SlapChop Superdome. Plus, ending the state subsidies (which was a foolish idea) is a good thing. It could've been a lot worse

I think about that every time I get one of those solicitation letters from Reliant. They have really been on a push for new customers and seemingly great incentives.

Yeah, whenever I think of Mercedes Benz I'm always seeing a Cajun behind the wheel and a trunk full of mudbugs.

"Mercedes Benz Superdome"? I confess that never entered my mind. I always thought if they named it then "Orkin Pest Control Superdome" would be the natural choice. They could do something about the rats.

Truth be told, Trojan would have been a perfect sponsor. The Trojan Superdome.

I smell a bribe. There's no way a high end, high quality company like Mercedes would want to associate with New Orleans. I don't buy the argument that the Superdome will be hosting major events over the next year or two. So?

The politicans in New Orleans greased some palms.

I do like, however, that Jerry Jones STILL is struggling to get a corporate sponsor for that gaudy-ass, overbuild monstrosity in Dallas. Word is, dude is seriously in debt. That's what hubris and arrogance gets you.

Serious question. Why is the stadium considered gaudy? I know that when coming into the stadium on Collins, you can't even see it until you're about two blocks away.

Mb is good brand but it doesn't fit the Nola image. I'm surprised an oil and gas or rig co isn't the sponsor. Good for them. They got naming rights revenue before the dallaholes cowboys did. That's cool with me.

Should we start a thread for name ideas for Jerry world?

His and his ky jelly stadium
assless chaps field
controlled substance park
the reach around
g.e.d. Ekwivelunt staydeeyum
el vaquero culero
the metrosexual mextroplexual
the brown handjob field
Pablo escobar estadio
the hiemlich manuever
the brokeback
toker and choker park

It's gaudy and overdone. Do you really need all that fancy artwork in the concourse? The oversized tv screen? Overall, the place is overbuilt.

Look at it this way. Reliant was built for $325 million in 2002. If it were built in 2011, using the Consumer Price Index annual inflation numbers, it would cost something like $450 million. Now, adjust the extra costs of building materials from 2002 numbers to what building materials would cost in 2011. Realistically, right now, you could build Reliant stadium for about $500 million right now.

Jerry just HAD to have a $1.5 BILLION dollar stadium. He didn't have to have a stadium that cost that much. He could have had a great stadium for about $700 million or so. But he just HAD to be the BEST, and he overbuilt, over decorated and it's biting him in his ass.

Oh trust me. I'm not questioning it. It's his money. He can do what he wants. I was making reference to it as an ego thing. He overspent, and can't find a corporate sponsor and now he has to carry the load of the debt. But you are correct: it's his cash, so he can do what he want.

So, art is a problem?

I am one who doesn't want to stand up the entire game because the individuals in front of me does including time outs. Where I sit in Reliant is about 150 yards away from the video board. Therefore, I like having the opportunity of not missing anything in Cowboys Stadium because of an obstructed view, win-win.

The price is all relative. For the team that built a stadium for $200 Million, could argue that $400 Million is too expensive. I look at it the same way as a house. For some $200K is fine, then for another $1 Million isn't enough. But it all boils down to preference and who is willing to foot the bill. I hope I'm not coming off argumentative, but I'm reminded of a talk show host in Houston who was having a fit about the money being spent building Reliant when we could be spending money on so many other things. He stated something about a playground for the rich nonsense. It's almost like saying if you don't build it somehow life in the city would improve drastically.

I guess it depend on how you define "his money"...

Quote:
To aid Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones in paying the construction costs of the new stadium, Arlington voters approved the increase of the city's sales tax by 0.5 percent, the hotel occupancy tax by 2 percent, and car rental tax by 5 percent. The City of Arlington provided over $325 million (including interest) in bonds as funding...

Source
Of course, citizens agreed to make public funds "his money", so perhaps it's a mute point.
