http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...players_092011

One former Texan makes the list as well.

EDIT: Actually the list was made by Forbes

Have to say I agree, unfortunately. He can live up to the salary but right now he's not earning it. 4 catches for 37 yards and 1 TD in 2 games is underachieving in our offense

Lol. So you expect every offensive pass catcher that we have to have 16TD's and 1600 yards.

I hope Matt Schaub is ready to throw for 6400 yards and 64 touchdowns. Otherwise we will have underachieving skill players.

Well, he did blow out his knee after signing his deal. He's playing at Probowl level right now.

Yes, because clearly thats what I said...

OD is the 2nd highest paid TE in the NFL according to the article. I would expect him to put up 60-70 receptions for 800ish yards and maybe 8 TDs.

Right now he's on pace for ~30 catches for ~300 yards.

Dreesen has put up similar numbers in many fewer opportunities.

I'm not saying our WR1, 2, TE, all need 1,000 yard seasons. But if you're going to be paid like one of the top 1-3 TEs in the NFL, its time to show it.

Its not like this is based on one season either. He was outplayed by Dreesen last year as well. He has never been a consistent threat in the red zone. Even during his 70 catch season he had 2 TDs all year. He has 18 for his entire career here.

He simply isn't earning top 2 TE money right now. Maybe he'll turn it around, but I don't see why this list has people surprised

I'm good with OD, by all accounts didn't he sign a team friendly deal? Like top 5 money? I didn't know it was top 2, I think that might be a stretch. Plus OD grabbing 60-70 receptions isn't going to happen, ever. The only person who has a legit shot at going over that mark is probably AJ, otherwise there are just too many viable receiving options. Also, with OD's injury history, I wouldn't lean on him that hard anyway.

I think we'll see him have a big game here or there. Possibly against the Saints with their weak LBs and depleted S

OD deserved his contract when he got it, lets not forget that at the time people were asking the question of whether he was one of the best in the league at his position.

He hasn't been as productive since but showed late last season that he's getting back to a good level.

People have to remember that OD's big season came when there was no 2nd TE taking looks off him, no huge RB threat out of the backfield, Jacoby not as good as he is now.

There was a time when our O relied so much more on the #1 TE as a release valve, that we use that release valve less now shows how far we've come.

Lets just set this straight right now. Saying that OD is making top 2 money is misleading. He might be making 2nd most in this one specific year of his deal, but to say he is getting paid top 2 TE money is false. As you can see he is well below these 6-7 TE's I listed below.

Owen Daniels: 3/3/2011: Signed a four-year, $22 million contract. The deal contains $6 million guaranteed. 2011-2014: Under Contract, 2014: Free Agent

Vernon Davis: 9/11/2010: Signed a six-year, $42.705 million contract. The deal contains $23 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus, Davis' first- and second-year salaries, and $4.148 million of his third-year salary. Davis is eligible for $200,000 annual workout bonuses in years two through six, as well as annual $400,000 roster bonuses. 2011: $4.708 million, 2012: $5.751 million, 2013: $6.072 million, 2014: $4.7 million, 2015: $4.35 million, 2016: Free Agent

Antonio Gates: 7/28/2010: Signed a six-year, $39.8 million contract. The deal contains $20.4 million guaranteed, including a $4.575 million signing bonus, $3.47 million first-year "option" bonus, and Gates' first two years' base salaries. His 2012 salary and $2.4 million of his 2013 salary are guaranteed for injury (not skill). 2011: $5.2 million, 2012: $4 million (+ $6.4 million option bonus), 2013: $4.5 million, 2014: $5 million, 2015: $5.9 million, 2016: Free Agent

Dallas Clark: 2/20/2008: Signed a six-year, $36 million contract. The deal contains $27 million in the first three years, including an $8.2 million "signing bonus" in the second season. Another $5.76 million is available through incentives. 2011: $4.2 million, 2012: $4.53 million, 2013: $5.33 million, 2014: Free Agent

Jason Witten: 9/11/2011: Signed a five-year, $37 million contract. The deal contains $19 million guaranteed. 2011: $3.391 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus), 2012: $3.641 million (+ $1 million roster bonus), 2013-2017: $37 million, 2018: Free Agent

Kellen Winslow: 4/6/2009: Signed a six-year, $36.1 million contract. The deal contains $20.1 million guaranteed, including his 2009 and 2010 salaries. Winslow's 2011 base salary is guaranteed for injury, but not for skill. Another $7 million is available through incentives. 2011: $8.259 million, 2012: $3.3 million, 2013: $4.5 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: Free Agent

Marcedes Lewis: 8/5/2011: Signed a five-year, $35 million contract. The deal contains $17 million guaranteed.

Greg Olsen: Signed a four-year contract extension. The average per year of the new deal is $5.7 million.

In 2007 and 2008, he had 63 and 70 catches, respectively.

Prorating his actual games played into seasons, he averages 64 receptions, 45 ypg and 4 TD's per season.

So yeah, he has done it and I think that he can get back to that form.

And as far as his TD's go, even AJ struggles to score TD's in this system, only averaging 7 per season for his career and never being in double digits, despite averaging 94 receptions per season.

Not sure if you're aware, but the artice states that it is counting its number only on base salary, and does not include bonuses, etc. Not sure if that still makes him the #2 TE, but that's why Sanchez was #1 on the list. They stated he's due something like $14.75 million this year in base salary alone.

Ha! Dunta Robinson is #2 on their list.

Atlanta Falcons’ cornerback Dunta Robinson(notes), whose $5.5 million salary places him in the top ten at his position despite the fact that he’s never made All Pro and who is ranked by ESPN as the NFL’s 19th best corner,

The old OD will be back this year, although his numbers may not be as gaudy as in the past since the Texans now have a running game.

Wow, I didn't know he ever caught that many. Well then there you have it, beast mode for 2 1/2 years on a 4th round contract. SM nailed it, he might be making a chunk THIS year but his contract isn't loaded like other contracts are. The cheap/elite production may deserve a little payback, he never bitched like the other guy on that list (who was in pretty much the same situation), his contract isn't going to pay up that much every year AND he isn't needed to catch that many passes anymore. Overpaid? I'd call it just about right.
