Default Film study week 1 vs Colts

It's a new season, I'm hoping to help in sharing all these wonderful plays with my fellow Texans fans.

Despite what some may think, I do not fall in love with any player.
AJ had been criticized by me a few years ago for not blocking as well on running plays as I think a big physical receiver is capable of.
Schaub had received his shares of my criticism.
Both were players I "endorsed" from the start of their tenure with the Texans.

So here to happy discussions with something a little more concrete to go by besides "pure" opinions.

There can be as many POVs as each and all who watched the games; hopefully, with a closer look, there will be fewer misunderstandings.
At least, we may be able to narrow it down to a few.

Here's the catch by Wayne in the second half that went for 33 yards.
This was the first play of the 5th defensive series in the second half.

I agree with Rey that we can't tell what the coverage call was.

My observations are as followed:

- As Rey mentioned, KJ passed off the receiver.

- Quin moved up top very quickly; he was deep outside the numbers even before the pass was thrown.

There was something going on there that we can't be sure of.
But it seems like the Texans were expecting a corner route.
Perhaps, they were looking to bait Collins and Wayne into such a route so that Quin can make a play.

Due to the way Quin and KJ played, it didn't look like pure man nor pure zone.

As far as Pattern Matching is concerned, the two rules of thumb (I think) are:

- The nickel back (McCain) is supposed to redirect the slot receiver Collie (the #2 receiver) and not allowing him to run free on a seam route (which Collie did).
So as Collie continued with this route, it wasn't a surprise that Mccain carried the route.

- The RCB (Jackson) would carry the route for sure when the #1 receiver (Wayne) releases outside (which is not the case here.)

As the #3 receiver (the TE from the other side) ran a slant to Jackson's side, it is feasible that the RCB Jackson should be aware of him even though the LB was already on him.
On this point, I'm not quite sure, all we know is that the TE slant route was there.

There are also the deep comeback by the slot Collie and the in route by Wayne to be of concern. (Of course, these are just possibilites if the defensive scheme calls for KJax to pass off the #1 receiver.)

The scenario that the D was supposed to be in man is always there, but IMO, was not supported well with the way Quin was playing over the top.

Maybe a reporter will ask Wade or Jackson about the play or we'll never know for sure!

My feeling on this is that the Texans had started playing a soft zone at this point in the game. I remember JoJo and KJ playing several yards back on most of the plays. I'm hoping that this is not a repeat of last year where we were so petrified of giving up the big play that we gave every receiver a 10 yard cushion.

First Defensive series.

First play. First and 10
pass SL to R.Wayne for 5 (G.Quin)

I think this play can serve as a primer on the concept of pattern matching as I'm learning.
It will be much appreciated if anybody who's familiar with pattern matching can shed more light on the concept.

As I understand, it's a zone that will pit each defender as quickly as possible with the receiving threat that threatens his area .
It is done with the primary idea that each of the defenders has the shortest distance to get his target.

Here's the line-up that shows the passing pattern of the offense.

On this play, the offense is in a shotgun 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TEs - and therefeore 2 receivers), the D then makes the coverage call they think would best counter the offensive maneuver.

It calls for the D to rush 4 with the 3 down linemen and the WILL Mario when they read pass (that would be when Addai started on his flare route to the flat; ie. nobody left in the backfield to take a hand-off.).

This play went to the weak side on the left to Wayne for a 5yd quick hitch, tackled by Quin.

With WCB Jackson playing 8yds off the LOS and backpedaling (per the D call), it is fairly obvious that when the WILL Mario was a designated pass rusher, the MO Ryans would be the one to follow the RB (the #2 receiving threat on the weak side) on the flare route to the flat.

The FS Quin originally came down (in case it was a run, and logically, also per the D call) was in the best position to take on any inside route by the #1 receiver Wayne. In this case, Wyane ran slightly with an angle to the inside and turned around on a quitch hitch route in front of the short curl area.

The WCB Jackson now became the defender over the top, backing up both Quin and Demeco.

On the strong side, the Colts was in a bunch formation with the #1 Garcon on the outer most.
The #2 is the TE Tammie lining up on top of the triangle.
The #3 is the TE Clark on the inside base of the triangle.

Here, the SAM Barwin took on the #3 Clark who ran a flat route toward the side line.

The #2 Tammie ran a 0 cut shallow cross into the short hole and was cut off by the MIKE Cushing.

The #1 Garcon ran a quitch hitch to the front of the hook zone and was covered by the SCB Joseph.

The SS Manning stayed back to provide help over the top in his deep 1/2.

Default Re: Film study week 1 vs Colts

Basiccally, the SAM (Barwin) will take on any receiver that runs the route nearest to the side line.
The MIKE (Cushing) will take on any receiver that runs the most inside route.
....

There are variances depending upon the offensive personnel and formation (and of course, the D call), but this should be the basic concept as I understand it.

...........

And of course, Wade's defense is not 100% pattern matching.
The D can be found in pure zone or pure man from time to time.
