Default Texans sign G Andrew Gardner, put G Shelley Smith on IR

Shelley Smith: Texans place G Smith on injured reserve

Texans placed OG Shelley Smith on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season. The Texans had high hopes for Smith as a developmental prospect, but couldn't afford to save his roster spot with Kasey Studdard and Antoine Caldwell on the shelf as well.

The team signed ex-Bengals G/T Andrew Gardner to replace Smith on the roster. Gardner is transitioning from a power- to zone-blocking scheme. Aug. 29 - 10:08 pm et

Texans signed G Andrew Gardner to a 2-year deal. G Shelley Smith, who was going to be 8th OL, was put on IR with ankle injury.

Andrew James Gardner (born April 4, 1986 in Tyrone, Georgia) is an offensive tackle for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played college football at Georgia Tech.

probably a run-blocker type of guy, since he played w/ GT.

Late round pick who has wandered through several teams, none of them zone blocking.

Smiths ankle injury sure seems more serious than a simple sprain .... if they put him on IR.

I look for an injury settlement for him and Studdard unless they think Smith will contribute in '12, '13, or whatever.

Gary really likes S.Smith .... I dont see an injury settlement for him. He'll ride out the season on IR and be back in camp next season.

He is raw with very little experience. One game experience with the Fish and on the Bengals PS all of 2010. The interesting fact was that in college he gained 60 pounds and was very reliable, not missing any games in 2 years. Then in his senior year, he suffered a torn labrum with only 2 games left in the season. He was projected as one of the highest rated LTs (2nd round) in the 2009 draft until this happened. He was still considered somewhat undersized........and was projected to be a great fit for a ZBS team. I remember the scouting reports were praising him for being the lead blocker for Choice when he was there and how he had the skills but need a little more size.

I agree. This is just Kubiaks way of stretching the practice squad list so that Smith gets a full salary this year. He probably just stubbed his toe.

Posts like these are why I stay in the damn NSZ ..... When Kubiak and Co lead this team on a deep playoff run will you have anything nice to say about the guy ? Or will it be more of the same even if he brings home the hardware in Janurary ?

I'll have no problem giving Kubiak his props when he's earned them but so far in 6 yrs. he's failed this team alot more than he's done well for them.

Getting back to the original topic, does anyone know if Gardner is any good? Can he pass protect?

Here's the NFL.com draft analysis:

Quote:
Strengths: Good height with adequate build on the edge. Plays strong, attacking his opponent through the whistle in pass protection by punching and continually extending his arms to keep his man outside the pocket. Keeps his feet moving, which keeps him locked on his man. Will go through the whistle on his man when necessary. Good movement to the linebackers, giving good effort to get his hands on quicker defenders in space. Effectively uses angles to direct speedy defenders around the play. Gets low on cut blocks, which he did quite often in Tech's option attack as a senior. Steady player, hard worker.

Weaknesses: Not the elite athlete most teams want at left tackle. NFL speed rushers may give him problems due to his average lateral movement and tendency to overextend or miss his punch. Inconsistent initial quickness off the ball. Needs to prove strong enough to play inside or on the other side of the line. Does not recover quickly or retain his balance after the initial hit while cut blocking, and sometimes whiffs on the cut itself. Struggles to sustain in space because he overextends and lacks recovery speed.

Maybe if this was after Thursdays game that might work. As it looks now our starting line is going to have to play a lot. That worries me with all the injuries we've already suffered on the line.

Sounds like the opposite to me. It sounds like they need someone right NOW and since SSmith is hurt, it's not him. So they stashed him (I get the same feeling on a couple IRs every year) early to give him another year to learn, get healthy, get stronger, come back a better player. Lestar Jean is the same way, I bet at some point this season he would be healthy enough to play but the coaches are kind of setting him aside for development/injury.

Is this some sort of criticism of Kubiak? If it is, I don't get it.

He thinks that Smith is somebody that's worth keeping for the future. But he's hurt right now. He apparently thinks the same way of LeStar Jean, who is also now hurt. So he IRs both of them, so that they can be paid, but he gets to stash them for future development without fear of losing them.

So, what's the problem here? Is it that Kubiak is manipulating the system? So what? Like nobody else is doing it?

I didn't read it as a criticism of Kubiak. I think all teams do that. While it means you can't use the player this season it also means they are protected rather than chance them going onto the PS.

This is how I read it as well. I'd be upset with Kubiak & Co. if they hadn't mastered the ancient art of stashing players on IR.

He is Eric Winston V 2.0. Like Winston, he was considered a top OT prospect, especially for a ZBS, until his shoulder injury. Like Winston he plummeted in the draft. He has been in the Power running system and would get a lot of benefit from spending time in a ZBS system. I think he lands on the PS and works his way up to being depth.
