Default Texans offensive line depth on shaky ground

Quote:
You may have missed it but late in the second quarter of the Texans win over the Saints (yes, I said the second quarter), the Texans trotted out an offensive line that consisted of LT Derek Newton, LG Shelley Smith, C Howard Barbeiri, RG Cody Wallace, and RT Cole Pemberton.

That's a sixth round draft pick from 2010, two undrafted free agents in 2011 and two undrafted free agents in 2010.

Not surprisingly, the Texans offense did not play well in the second half of the game against the Saints.

The Texans depth at offensive line is a little less deep all of a sudden thanks to injuries to primary backups Rashad Butler, Antoine Caldwell and Kasey Studdard. And don't look now but Shelley Smith didn't practice today because of an ankle injury.

Studdard is done for the year due to an ankle injury suffered against the Jets in the preseason opener.

Caldwell suffered a high ankle sprain and could be out for a while.

Butler, a key offseason re-signing by the Texans, is out with a hamstring and won't play Saturday night.

49ers? I am ok with that same group in 2nd half. I am hoping Pemberton will work into a player eventually.

The Texan 1's weren't playing then, so OK. As far as depth, a couple of Texan 1's would be considered 2's on other teams. We could use an elite LT and move DB to RT, where he belongs. Winston is serviceable at RT, but not as a long term answer. Both tackles strugle in passpro and RT could do better in run blocking. Winston, himself, has owned up to this.

Oline depth does concerns me. Hope Rashad Butler, Shelley Smith come back shortly and wishing for soonest recovery for Coldwell. We need these guys to come back ASAP.

Correction, Newton is our seventh rd 214th pick in 2011 draft and not UDFA. A rare mistake by Alan.
