It seems that one of the reasons, among other things, that Watt is so disruptive to the quarterback is because he rushes with his hands up in the air.
Why is this such a difficult principle for the REST of the Texans D to grasp? Last edited by CloakNNNdagger; 08-20-2011 at 11:31 PM. Reason: add "REST of" for clarification |

I'm confused. Didn't they specifically draft Watt because of his size and reach and the size of his hands? I believe that during the press conference in Houston when he was introduced Wade held up Watts hands to specifically show that they were huge.

I meant that I don't see anyone other than Watt rushing the quarterback while holding their hands above their heads

Watt has good timing and long arms. He isn't as low as some other d linemen when he rushes, but he still gets good pressure.
But habits are contagious. I bet that over the course of the year you will see other players start to get their hands up. |

DIfferent defensive instruction. Watt played that way in college so is used to it. I expect to see more players doing that. For example, that is how Antonio Smith got the deflection. Wade's progress will continue to improve team.

In this game, Connor Barwin got his hands up and forced a difficult throw that fell incomplete. So I think the instruction might be getting through to some of the guys.

It was great to see Watt do it against top-shelf competition in a game situation (as opposed to bating Schaub in practice).
OTOH - Can somebody please show Lineart how NOT to throw into the Defenders' hands. He threw one tonight AFTER they had their hands up, it wasn't a deflection, it was a poorly thrown ball!

I've questioned why Mario doesn't play with his hands in the air and bat down balls, but I think that it involves hustle and desire and I just don't see that much of either from Mario any more. Like AJ said a few days ago Mario could own the league if he wanted to.
