Default Does Ben Tate's Situation remind you of Bennie Joppru ?

The injury is a tough break for Tate, who had a much tougher break a year ago, when on the second carry of his first preseason game he broke his leg and suffered ligament damage in his right ankle.
Tate technically is a second-year running back, but in most ways he's a rookie. He hasn't played in an NFL game. He hasn't proved to Texans coaches he is a quality NFL running back. And the former Auburn star hasn't shown he is a durable running back who can take the pounding that all ball carriers in the league take.
It is disappointing that Tate, 22, who had few injuries in high school and
college, hasn't been able to get his professional career going. His confidence isn't shaken, but he is aching.

Both stars in college at highly-rated programs (Michigan & Auburn) & both taken in the 2nd round by the Texans and both having serious injury problems which is having devastating impacts on their careers, even in getting their careers started and yet both having little history of injury until entering the NFL.
Houston Chronicle writer Jerome Solomon has a pretty good piece here on the frustrations of being Ben Tate.

Not yet...reminds me of an Ahman Green situation...all hype for a star runningback only to be dissapointed by injuries.

Joppru level will not hit until the third season.

Why does that happen? Hardly any injuries before and all of a sudden they start piling up. Body breakdown? I think Tate will be ready to go this season. Hope he can stay healthy because I had high hopes when we drafted him.

Houston Chronicle writer Jerome Solomon has a pretty good piece here on the frustrations of being Ben Tate.
Joppru demonstrated major injuries WITHOUT EVER BEING HIT. He suffered a sports hernia in training camp in '03, reinjured it in minicamp in '04, then tore his right ACL during the first coaching session of the offseason in May 2005.

Tate has had one major injury (caused by a tackle from behind with a violent torque of his ankle), the type of which with proper repair and adequate rehab should allow him to return at about 1 year post injury within 90% of pre-injury performance. This short offseason may prolong the typical rehab and training for that return. But it is realistic to ultimately happen.
Hopefully, the Texans will be patient with his hamstring episode, and allow for adequate rest and rehab before letting him back out there.

Joppru's case was a different animal all togeth. He could never get back to even practice/contact status throughout his entire professional career.

Tate has missed three days of practice this year, which is hardly the end of the world. Everyone should at least be willing to wait and see how he does through the rest of training camp before starting this kind of talk.

He was looking great before he tweaked his hamstring, which is hardly a major injury. Let's cut the guy a little slack.

Wtf? Justice and Solomone have both been pimping this whole deal in the Chron and people are biting. Tates injury last year was a freak thing on the field of play and would have happened to anyone. This year he gets a tightened hammy (just like 15 other players have) and now he is the next Bennie or he is in danger of not making the team like the Chron suggests???

Talk about overreaction. Tate is a 2nd round pick and has a heap of talent. He will come back from this hammy, he will play this season, and he is not going anywhere. If he gets another major injury then maybe, just maybe its a sad coincidence.... and nothing more.

Kubiak always seems so impatient when discussing injuries. I wonder if it makes guys rush back only to reinjure

The impatience probably is generated from both sides, but it is up to coach to use some common sense if the player doesn't, and the training medical staff to apply their knowledge/experience and hold back both parties when appropriate. Bad things happen when the trainers and medical staff give in to the pressures of players and coaches.

Hey man that's my point, it's deja Vu all over again.
But Kubiak is a real dope here IMO because he seems so exasperated with Tate, as if he's dogging it or something ?

I think you are looking way too much into something that isnt there. Example... JJO gets a hammy, Kubiak says he will be back in a day or so, no biggie. But in reality, the trainers already know he wont be back in just a day or so even if it is just a little tighten. What Kubiak says and what actually goes down are two different things. What Kubiak wants, and what Kubiak gets are two different things. Thats why people waste way too much time around here trying to read into things, or try to connect dots of a deeper meaning that simply may or may not even exist. Its a waste of time.

Why is Ben Tate's hammy this much of a thing little more than a full week into TC? Nothing else to talk about? To me this becomes an issue if he plays no preseason games and we have yet to play our first game.

Reminds me a little be of Jeremiah Johnson. Jeremiah was UDFA but, some of us were kind of high on him due to his toughness and one cut and go type RB. He had a shoulder issue and I believe we had to put him on IR and following year he was let go. Now with Denver, Jeremiah had TD on his first preseason game this year. Hope, we don't ended up letting him go like Jeremiah before we find out what kind of RB Tate is capable of. Come to think of it, DA also signed with Denver. Are they becoming Houston North? Instead of us becoming Denver South?

Go Texans!!!

Still feeding the monster? And I dont know... it was always about Foster for me the second we signed both. We clearly made the right choice and no need to look back on it one iota.

Think back to last year MojoMan. Tate hurt his hammy BEFORE he showed up to OTAs. He missed most of the OTAs and some of mini-camp. Now he can't practice AGAIN.

I'll wait because we must have used a 2nd round pick on the guy for some reason.

I don't remember if it's GP or TPN who keeps preaching "you can't have enough RBs because they don't stay healthy" Color me converted.

I agree it is a problem. If he is out for a few more days, no big deal. If he is out for the rest of camp, then it will be time to sound the alarm. I am just suggesting we all refrain from freaking out after a guy misses three days of practice during training camp because he tweaked his hammy. A little perspective is in order here.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm no where near ready to
But his history - as brief as it is - says we have something to keep an eye on.
