![]() Wade Phillips: The Wolf For Those of you who missed it back in January, a refresher on what Wade Phillips brings to the table as DC. Wade Phillips version of the 3-4 defense is different from Dick LeBeau's zone scheme in Pittsburgh and Bill Belicheck's "Parcells-Fairbanks" scheme. The Wade Phillips 3-4 is largely a one gap 3-4 system, meaning, unlike the Belicheck/LeBeau systems, the defensive linemen are often only responsible for one gap between the offensive linemen. The linemen can afford to be more aggressive because they receive more support from the linebackers in performing their roles. This system generally prefers relatively lighter, more agile lineman better able to perform aggressive slants, loops and gap charges in order to directly attempt to sack the quarterback and make tackles. Here are the rankings of Wade Phillips led defenses since joining the Denver Broncos in 1986. Denver Broncos (Key Players: Karl Mecklenburg, Tom Jackson, Steve Atwater, Rulon Jones, Simon Fletcher) 1986: 15th in points, 9 in yards. 48 sacks, 35 forced turnovers 1987: 7th in points, 9 in yards. 31 sacks, 47 forced turnovers 1988: 20th in points 22nd in yards. 36 sacks, 29 forced turnovers 1989: 1st in points 3rd in yards. 46 sacks, 43 turnovers 1990: 23rd in points 20th in yards. 33 sacks, 25 turnovers 1991: 3rd in points, 5th in yards. 52 sacks, 33 turnovers 1992: 19th in points, 22th in yards. 49 sacks, 31 turnovers 1993: 10th in points, 19th in yards. 46 sacks, 31 turnovers 1994: 25th in points, 28th in yards. 23 sacks, 21 turnovers Buffalo Bills (Key Players: Bruce Smith, Cornerlius Bennet, Daryl Talley, Sam Cowart) 1995: 12th in points, 13th in yards. 49 sacks, 28 turnovers 1996: 6th in points, 9th in yards. 48 sacks, 28 turnovers 1997: 23rd points, 9th in yards. 46 sacks, 22 turnovers 1998: 15th points, 6 in yards. 43 sacks, 31 turnovers 1999: 2nd points, 1 in yards. 37 sacks, 21 turnovers 2000: 18th points, 3 in yards. 42 sacks, 29 turnovers Atlanta Falcons (Key Players: Keith Brooking, Patrick Kerney, Ed Jasper, Ellis Johnson) 2002: 8th points, 19th yards. 47 sacks, 39 turnovers 2003: 30th points, 32nd in yards. 36 sacks, 31 turnovers San Diego Chargers (Key Players: Shawne Merriman, Shawn Phillips, Jamaal Williams, Donnie Edwards) 2004: 11th points, 18th in yards. 29 sacks, 33 turnovers. 2005: 13th points, 13th in yards. 46 sacks, 20 turnovers 2006: 7th points, 10 yards. 61 sacks, 29 turnovers Dallas Cowboys (Key Players: Demarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Zach Thomas, Jay Ratliff) 2007: 13th points, 9 in yards. 46 sacks, 29 turnovers 2008: 20th points, 8 in yards. 58 sacks, 22 turnovers 2009: 2nd points, 9 in yards. 42 sacks, 21 turnovers What you see with Phillips' defenses is they don't always dominate from a yardage standpoint, but they almost always harass the quarterback. I'm not advocating keeping Gary Kubiak, but I will say that Wade Phillips is a good defensive coordinator. |

Wade Phillips had a complete break down? What happened he realized that Jackson was his only other option at CB?

I was thinking, that would have been new. Not an injury to a player this time to screw up our season, but mental anguish for our coach! This vicious curse on Houston Sports...lol.
Good info though, it's nice to see the numbers since I've never taken the time to look them up. |

Shawn Merriman went down for the year after the first game.

The Texans gave up so many points last year they actually stopped counting for the 2010 season and spilled over into the 2011 season. In fact Manning just threw 3 TD's on us.

However, I do expect them to be a better defense than last year for game 1 against the Colts. Expectations do not have to be very high to just be better than last year!

Phillips was in Dallas from 2007-2010.
