I can't take credit for this senario. It comes from a guy on the Denver ESPN radio station. His premis is this:
Niners want out of the 1st pick. No one seems to want to trade up to the 1st. Niners are in cap trouble and are lowballing Rogers & Smith and not getting much of a response. If they don't want to pay 1st pick price, not really sold on either QB, but do want to get a good first round player, Guess what? They could sit on thier thumbs and let the clock run out on thier pick and then Miami is on the clock. They could keep doing this until they got to a pick level they would be "OK" with (4th or 5th??) they can then just jump in and grab the player there. I wonder if they have the stones to do something like that? It would be really cool to watch all the pundits running thier mouths about it.

Can't remember who, but one of the pundits suggested that. But, since then it seems several teams have chosen Smith as the clear favorite including possibly Miami, and so the 49'ers would have to be comfortable getting Rogers. Won't happen though.

Won't happen. Washington has made serious offers trying to move up - SF would take the picks instead of playing around.
I would like to see them trade down with washington (for #9, #26, RGardner) - then trade back up a couple of spots (back in front of AZ) and pick up Rodgers (the guy they wanted a week ago anyway - but at a cheaper price) #9+#33 for #6. |

A fears years back, when minnesota was late with their pick and had two teams pick before them, I remember there was some controversy. It seems like the player that they picked wanted the value of the spot where minn. was supposed to pick, and the team wanted to pay the value of the actual pick which was two picks later... I can't remember the player or the outcome of the contract negotiations, but I remember that there was an issue with the value of the contract.
