I think DB's not referring to the actual comments, but the fact that Winston tweets quite often. He was out front with the lock-out stuff and lately the back and forth with Lombardi. I agree with DB in that regard.

'Validation' is an ego thing, not necessarily saying that it makes his comments valid. JMO

I think if his comments about being soft were completely ignored by the team / players, there would not be much to talk about.

Winston feeds Lombardi's ego with the tit-for-tat, so that validates his message in his mind.

Lombardi is fishing here. He's a media wonk, and as such, loves any kind of exposure. So arguing with a player just confirms that he's fishing the right pond.

I just hope our team makes him eat his words at the end of the season.

Of course Winston was being sarcastic. But, it also shows that Lombardi's comments got under his skin because he obviously feels the need to deflect. Winston has one foot in the media, so he takes analysts comments with more than a grain of salt. I did not see AJ say anything about Lombardi. hmmmmm....

Lombardi is just a talking butterface. I said it in the other thread. Winston should just ignore the dude and prove him wrong on the field. A pro player engaging Lombardi just validates his opinions.

I don't see it that way at all. Any player who has pride wouldn't just let that comment by Lombardi drift by without a shot back... and since it was Winston's statement that was quoted in Lombardi's comments, it was Winston who had to strike back. Lombardi is a asshat and Winston basically just called him a moron, which he is.


The only place where Winston fails is you can never argue with the media and win. It goes back to the old saying... "never argue with someone who buys their ink in bulk". It's like someone who calls in to argue with a radio host. Even if you're right the host will just hang up on you and he'll always get the last word. Winston is in a situation that he can't win. Even if the Texans make the playoffs, as soon as they come up short, Lombardi can go on air and declare the reasons why they lost as he chooses (softness for instance).


So in short, I'm glad Eric Winston showed pride (Which is what this team needs more of) and fired a sarcastic remark back.... but it won't do any good, because he's basically in a situation that he can't win. Lombardi will always paint "this team" soft even if they do break through and go on a big playoff run. Unless the Texans win a SB, He'll be free to call them soft in any defeat on the field. I'm still glad Winston fired back though, because as i said earlier He's a asshat. Hell if you really want to know about Michael Lombardi, go talk to any Raiders fan.

I still say the best thing Winston could've said was "Lombardi? WHO" and change the subject. Act like you've never heard of him and marginalize his credibility from the standpoint that he's a know-nothing nobody, not worthy of the attention of the starting RT of the Houston-tough as-effing-titanium-Texans. Winston hasn't been in enough hardball meetings. He pays an agent for that.

Yeah, in hindsight...that's the best remedy for it. Act like you've never heard of the guy.

And if the reporter persists, continue to play it up:

"Lombardi....Lombardi. That name sounds familiar...wait, wasn't he with the Raiders or something and he wasn't good enough to stay with the Raiders or something? Does he have a show? He has a show or something?"

(Reporter says, "No, he is ON a show.")

yep, that's all I've been trying to say, as well. Ignoring Lombardi is the best revenge, because it marginalizes his opinions. And his opinions are what his professional media career is all about at the end of the day.

Eric did not elevate himself by playing this game with Lombardi. He lowered himself to Lombardi's level, who is just a media dork.

To me it's a much more powerful statement for a pro athlete to just respond with "who?".

And that's all I've tried to say about validation. Lombardi needs players to stoop to his level to validate his existence.
