Default Texans 11th in Strength of Schedule

I know some people don't like to talk about SoS.

I do.

Here is the 2011 SoS, we've got the 11th hardest schedule & once again we play a schedule that is tougher than .500

This is our result (along with the rest of the league) against the 2010 schedule, when we & the Titans had the toughest.

We've got 7 games against teams with winning records. 2 against the Colts. 4 of those teams had winning records vs. losing records, meaning they were helped by their schedule.

P.S. the teams highlighted in green are the teams on our 2011 schedule.

In 2010, 19 teams played a schedule .500 or more difficult. 6 teams beat that schedule, Jets, Bears, Ravens, Colts, Giants, & Patriots.

That's 30%

Right, they had 4 of the 5 easiest schedules, and none of them finished better than 7-9.

The Chargers, who we normally think as an elite team (at least I did) had the 4th easiest schedule, & finished 9-7.

Using teams' 2010 records to determine the difficulty of their 2011 schedule is inherently flawed for a number of reasons. Free agency, trades, and drafts create a lot of player turnover and teams change coaches and/or schemes. It's not called the league of parity for nothing. Scheduling also has a large affect. For example, an AFC division scheduled against the NFC East in 2010 and the NFC West in 2011 is going to show a markedly tougher SOS than what actually exists.

The only way to accurately judge SOS is to do so in hindsight.

What I see is that teams that you would compete with for the playoffs have easy schedules...look at Ravens and Steelers. BUT I've always said that overall, take over the years, you never know who is going to be easy or tough. It's the NFL.

I'm good with this.

However, If you look at the 2010 schedule, which I provided, you'll see the 4 teams with the toughest schedules did not do so well. You'll also notice that only 30% of the teams playing a .500 schedule or better finished with a winning schedule.

Will it always be that way? I don't know, but it does fall in with the generally accepted concept. Teams with tougher schedules don't do so well.

But you're right, & I like to look at it in hindsight more than anything. Playing a similar schedule, we did as well as the Titans and Cowboys. I think it's a much better gauge of your team than the W-L records alone.

The Bucs better than we are.... pfft....

I can agree with this as well. But what do you think about a team like the Cardinals, or the 49ers, or the NFC West in general, as was pointed out, they had 4 of the 5 easiest schedules in the league & not one of them finished better than 7-9.

I wouldn't have expected that.
