Schaub's health without Leach

JamesBill

Most people are only talking about the run game without Leach but I am much more worried about Schaub getting leveled.

First off Arian is gonna get his in the run game. He is the real deal. I love James Casey but blocking schemes and assignments for passing are more complicated than running with the ball and he has never been asked to do it.

Schaub will be fine. Leach was probably in for 25 % of the passes we threw if that.

He kept Matt from getting destroyed on the pass play to AJ80 in the Redskins game.

Whoever they bring in, I hope he knows the pass protection schemes very well.

With the plethora of talent remaining in the backfield I doubt Foster will carry the load as much as he did last year and he'll be back blocking on most plays where we have a back in pass protection.
Because of this I doubt Schaub's protection will suffer too much due to Leach's departure.

Leach's absence will be felt. Arian will feel it and Schaub will too. Don't kid yourselves. The term, though in this case not so little, is "It's the little things that make a team." Leach is no little thing, both in size and contribution. Why do you think he was paid so much by Baltimore? Because they know this.

This.
Wait until 3-and-short or third-and-goal... just wait....

We had trouble in 09 with short yardage and Leech was our FB then as well. Short yardage has more to do with OL and the back finding the holes than anything else.

While he will be missed, he was only on the field for 37% of the snaps. Of the 37%, I bet 8 out of 10 plays were running plays. Hell he only caught 8 balls all year.

Casey's smart, hopefully he or a vet they bring in will be adequate.

aaaaand....that has to do with...what?

My hope is that Casey develops into a Moose Johnston type player, good lead blocker that is dangerous out of the backfield. Their simiar in size and hopefully have similar careers. If this happens I doubt we'll miss VL too much

Well, being a bit player, he really was only used to do one thing.....and it wasn't pass blocking.

Yup.

And quite a few of the plays where we did pass in a two back set were roll outs or bootlegs. Arian is responsible for way more blitz pickups than Vonta.

Yes. It was blocking for the runningback. You call that a bit player, I call that an important piece of a football team.

I was responding to what the OP said ^^^ and how Leach wasn't really in there to pick up blitzes.

Are you guys kidding? Casey is a former TE and VERY athletic. He can shed blocks and pick up blitzers just by thinking about it. Much ado about nothing. It's not like we have Favra playing FB.

I didn't say he wasn't important. I said he was a specialist. If you want to imply anything further, it's that he was kind of a give away for what the offense was about to do.
For as much **** that got thrown Barwin's way for being a 3rd down specialist, you would think VL might've caught a little hell for having the same role.

That is true. The other thing I hated was how sometimes Vonta would split out wide. Like if the defense was really going to give a crap that Vonta was going deep or even going to run a route. If anything Casey or Vickers now present a threat if they ever have to split to the WR position.

Now we need to start a thread about Schaubs health with Vickers. Anyone know much about him?
