I think he (Holliday) could be a threat as a 3rd down back ..... his recieving skills are very solid , if he can pick up the blocking aspect .... the kids got potential. I know its a lot to ask of a guy who's a buck fitty .... but he doesnt have to put guys on their as , just re-direct or slow them.


They do have a lot of options in PR / KR now .... Maybe the roster is good enough top to bottom that they can keep a specialist at one of those spots.

BUT if Holliday showed he could hang onto the rock on ST , I think he deserves a look , at least in some sets as a 3rd down back ..... Dude gets in space and .... he's tough to catch much less bring down. (Pending he shows he can handle the blitz) Just another aspect to add to an already potent Texans offense.

Seriously? You really want a guy who is maybe 5'7", 150 lb protecting Schaub by picking up the blitz on third down? Playing a new position? After Matt and Matt are both put on IR, Dan O might get some playing time after all.

If Holliday can pick up the blocking aspect, then we didn't need Manning. We could just have Duane Brown play safety and return kicks.

I don't think Holliday makes the team this year, I think he'll be cut in TC.

Agreed, Unless Holiday really shines in TC. JJ or Keo will be the PR. Tate will be the KR.

Johnathan Joseph is a the first Probowl-caliber cornerback
in Texans' history. Things are looking up!

Aaron Glenn and Dunta Robinson both made it one time no? I know Glenn did for sure. Not sure on Dunta. Prior to now, these were the best two corners we have had. Glenn was a very good cover corner but aging quickly. Dunta was physical as hell, and pretty good in coverage as well until that bad injury. Never the same after that.

JJ should be like a younger AG in some ways, and all in all, probably will be our best corner to this point in the franchises history, especially if longevity counts.

I LOVE these signings. Not sure if we could have gotten Manning had Aso signed with us. We may have had to settle for someone stop gap. I'll take JJ+Manning over Aso+scrub SS anyday. Manning is 28 and should man the SS position for 5 yrs. Same with JJ. Manning is the first "rangy" safety we have had. Every freaking safety they draft or sign until now is an in the box run stopper and terrible in coverage. Manning can actually cover! Who could have thunk it. An actual real safety. Holy cow. And he is an excellent KR too!

The offseason is a a solid A. Excellent draft, and an awesome one-two punch in FA. I tell you guys what - this offseason has Wade Phillips paw prints all over it. While I am not big on Wade as a HC, I do very much like him as a DC. I think they basically turned this offseason over to Wade and he is pulling all the strings here. Left to thier own devices, Smithiak has been a total failure on talent evaulation and acquisition....and they have totally ignored the safety position. It's a new dawn and a new day!!

Smithiak has had nothing but a bunch of yes men as DC's that don't have the gravitas that Wade has. This is now Phillips D, for the good or the bad.

I can't wait to see these guys on the field. After last season, I felt lower than I have ever been toward this team and ready to throw in my fandom card. Now - gotta admit I am pumped. They have managed to draw me back in. Please don't let me be Charlie Brown running to kick the ball once again only to have the Texans...errr Lucy pull the ball away again.

This has to be the year. Right? Someone tell me I'm not wasting another freaking fall watching a train wreck. Still leery about in game decisions by Kubes, but we have the talent to succeed now. No excuses.

Glenn made it as a Texan in 2002. Dunta has never been.

Just chatted with a friend of mine who is a Bears season ticket holder.

He described Manning as a hard hitter but one who would blow alot of coverages. He said "Good luck with Manning. I'll miss his inability to read a route."

I still feel like Manning is a massive improvement over where we were at...but these comments have me mildly concerned.

I would not read that much into it. Chicago played a 4-3. Houston with new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is going to run a 3-4. Wade will weigh heavily on his OLB's for pass rush along with Cushing inside. So his assingments will change, more shadow & cover exploiting his ball skills to make more down field plays.

I can't imagine the Texans are going to use this guy for any sort of return duty unless it's some kind of emergency. I can already imagine with the money he is getting that he is penciled in to start at the SS spot, and usually you don't want to risk your starters getting more hits than normal.

Manning obviously has his warts (as well as Joseph) but if he can prove to be a decent upgrade over what Pollard gave us last year, then I think he'll be a success. This team needs a freaking exorcism when it comes to pulling down or causing turnovers and I hope that Manning (and Joseph!) can help exorcise those demons. At least this offseason, to fix the turnover problems we have always had with Kubiak, we are doing more than just putting words on the backsides of peoples workout shorts.

Well it appears Rick Smith finally woke up from his 5 year slumber. Better late than never, I guess...

I decided to check Manning out, so I watched the Bears played the Eagles.
In this particular game, Bears were in cover 2 mostly and they played the two safeties deeper than I've ever seen the Texans played them under Bush.
They let Vicks have the underneath to prevent any long throw.
The front 4 pressure was good. They stopped the run with 7.
They didn't leave any CB on an island but only a couple of times when they blitzed (single safety.)

Manning stepped up a few on the TE.
Overall, he did what he was supposed to do and didn't miss any assignment and didn't blow any coverage.

The Bears had a good lead and went into prevent defense in the 4th quarter.
Bears won 31-26 (Eagles scored a TD in garbage time.)

Overall, this was not a game to really see what Manning is all about.

The main thing is I don't see any blown coverage like that Bears fan hinted.
But it was only one game!
