Total: $71,815, 215 for 37 players. 46 roster spots -37= 9 to sign from draft and free agency.

This does not include bonus money and therfor not a true cap hit but close as I've found. For example, Mario's cap is $16m from my research.

$120m + $3.5 m for a vet (cash benefit) +$3m borrowed from future= $126.5m reported NFL Salary cap allowance.

$126.5 -$72m (rounded)= $54.5 million under cap.

I have probably made some errors in math & some will disagree with my roster, but at least you can tell where my numbers come from. I have reviewed this until my eyes and head hurt and after I post it I'll probably groan at mistakes I've made.

Dead money and pro-rated bonuses would add to that quite a bit, I would estimate. Not really sure though, just trying to think of what would make the number so much bigger in other reports.

And you would be correct, IMO. My understanding Mario's cap figure would be close to $20MM this season.

Yeah, this is about right. This is old cap data, but rough 2011 cap figures I had were:

Mario - $20.3MM
Schaub - $9MM
Andre - $9.1MM
Antonio - $7.1MM
Winston - $5.5MM
Myers - $3.5MM
Dan O - $3.5MM
Cushing - $3MM
Amobi - $2.8MM

Toss in newer deals too for the likes of DeMeco, OD, Walter, and Rackers, and this adds up quick.

Keith maintains one of the better Texans Cap pages around. He is a little behind due to last year not being capped and this years off the field issue dampening everyone's enthusiasm.

What's always amazing to me is how few people understand how the prorated bonuses affect the yearly cap.

Unless I'm missing something, you're 46 roster spots is game day active, while I'm guessing the total roster will still be at least the same 53 it was last year - meaning 16 to sign from draft and free agency, not 9.

As stated in my thread bonus not known on all players and I did not research it. Dead money is about $23,000 if I remember correctly and insignificant. The salary cap guru hired by McNair 3-4 years ago as cleared it out.

I understand, I'm not trying to sandbag you. I'm just trying to figure out why our reported cap number is so much different than the one you calculated. I appreciate the effort.

I refer to Keith a lot but used roto world as only site I could find to have a complete roster listing of 2011 salaries. Mario's salary is as stated $13.8m and $16m was my last known cap figure (2010) and what I used in my example. Not surprised if 2011 will be $20m. Still, looks like we should have more than the $7m John McClain stated. I am open to facts showing players using up most of the cap space I have shown.

My only complaint if that is most people just grab the first thing they hear or "ESPN says.." and runs with it as truth.

Not criticising you and I too am in the dark of where the $118 m or so number comes from. Heck, it might be correct but when I start crunching numbers it sometimes does not look the same. I don't understand why it has to be so complicated. Well maybe at first when a player's contract is worked out there may be grey areas about how money was spread over what years but it should be clearer than what we get.
