NCAA gives LSU 1-year probation for violations

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—LSU committed major violations while recruiting a junior college football player, the NCAA ruled Tuesday. The governing body also placed the school on probation for a year and cited a former assistant coach for unethical conduct.

The investigation found that ex-assistant coach D.J. McCarthy improperly arranged for transportation and housing for former defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, then later tried to cover up those actions.

The NCAA accepted LSU’s self-imposed reduction of two scholarships, as well as a 10 percent reduction in official visits and reductions in recruiting calls. The reduction in visits, which LSU already began during the 2010-11 academic year, also applies to 2011-12.


McCarthy resigned in December 2009. Hicks never played for the Tigers before he left LSU.

Exactly what is a one year probation? Can they still play for national title & keep $ from bowl game? If yes, that is a cheap discipline. Maybe LSU could have suggested their players could no longer have access to Dairy Queens...

Well I'm sure that Texas has some pretty good lobbyists that know where to spread the money around the NCAA. I believe that all of these big schools break rules.

Florida, as far as I know, is clean.

Texas is clean.

They're all dirty. It's just a matter of whether or not they're caught. None of the big time schools are clean. Naive to think so.

Since I do not work within any University or have any first hand knowledge of how any University conducts their business, I have no idea who is clean and who is not.

But LSU is too big to fail. The Georgia Techs and the SMUs of the world, well, they make good examples of what will happen if you break the rules.
