Default What an overhaul!

It's amusing to look back at all the complaining by fans about how the Texans aren't improving themselves and are going to have a bad season...

After the '03 season, we were an average, aging, slow defense... NOW:
The only 30 year olds on our defense are Payne, Walker, Glenn, Coleman... at their best, they are all pro bowl caliber players. As Vinny points out, DLmen tend to do well into their mid-30's... As far as Glenn and Coleman, they are at positions where we arguably have the best depth of any NFL team, including NE, Balt, Phillie, etc...

We should be thankful that we get to root for such an excellently run organization. Certainly there is no guarantee that this team will become a winner. However, when you have people in place that develop and execute a plan as well as McNair, Casserly, Capers, and company- there is always hope and opportunity- and that, friends, is much more than a lot of NFL fans have.

We have a class organization and we should be proud. I'm going to embrace this group because there will be a day when Casserly, Capers, and even McNair are gone and there's no guarantee that they won't be replaced with the Bidwell's, Jones's, McCombs', or York's of this world.

Caper's takes quite a bit of heat around here and that's fine. He's the head coach and is therefore accountable for their performance. I doubt he views it any differently. I think he's one of the better NFL head coaches but also realize their are probably 8 or 10 better ones. However, there are few better men than him in the NFL or anywhere else and I take pride in rooting for truly good and honorable people- that's why a alienated my life-long love of the Dallas Cowboys in the mid 1990's.

My favorite Caper's quote: "We want to understate and overperform, on the field and in life."

I think something else about the Texans coaching staff is they are one of the lower paid groups around. I think it helps reflect the team first attitude.

(I wouldn't mind seeing them open up on offense more though.)

I'm feeling the positive energy, but I am still a little worried about our pass rush if Peek doesn't perform up to expectations...It has been proven that you can have UFAs and WRs playing in your secondary and still succeed with a good pass rush, but I'm not sure if a good secondary can completely make up for an absent pass rush...I am optimistic that Babin will improve and Peek should be in the 8-10 sack range if he stays healthy...

Please come and provide a negative opinion. Tell us how bad PB is; how our draft is going to be bad; how the Titans will win the Super Bowl next year!!!

I haven't been on in awhile and wanted to see what fans thought of the recent moves. I love them. I'm not dilusional in thinking P-Buch is a shut down corner but neither was wright and he had to cover for Glenn when he was hurt over the last couple of seasons.

What I'm saying is, I'm excited and I think with the addition of Greenwood at the ILB and Peek getting his shot at OLB is going to make this team young and mean. If Babin steps up, QB's will not know where the rush could come from before each snap. That's how the Pats beat the Colts every year.

From top to bottom...What a Defense!!!

Would you still be worried about the pass rush if we drafted that DeMarcus Ware kid? What would be your answer to the problem? We still have the #13 pick.

I'm not worried about peek's ability to perform. I am still worried about the defense giving up first downs on stupid penalties if Peek doesn't learn to shut the motor off after the whistle blows. It's a risk worth taking, considering what he can do in the offensive backfield when he flashes by somebody.

I'm wishing Houston would've done something better on the LB or DL front, but let's not start the Greenwood debate again. I do hope the Texans use at least one draft pick for OL depth (and maybe a surprise starter), and can accomplish something regarding DL depth. I frankly expect either Payne or Walker to miss huge chunks of this upcoming season and would love to have some other options.

All in all, it's an unexpected and daring new look in the LB corps and secondary. It's a gamble, but the payoff is potentially great. I REALLY hope it works!

It's a chicken/egg thing. Do we get more sacks because our DB's shut down their WR or do we get more INT's because our DT's and LB's get good pressure on the QB.
I would like to think that with our pickup of P Buch. it will allow our pass rushers a few more seconds of opportunaty to get to the QB. Even if our INT's don't go WAY up the signing can have a possitive impact on the D-fense if we get more sacks because the QB has to hold onto the ball longer.

What I like about PB is that he has the physical tools to be great. If Hoke can retrain him, he could be great.

Going into a draft, all they have is potential and that is how I am looking at the P.Buc. thing. He is a second rounder with HUGE potential and we paid a 30% premium to get him (% of 3rd rounders that make it) for his NFL experience. If we can get him to his potential we have had a big win. If not, we haven't blown too much. IMO, a risk well worth the taking. The risk/reward thing is in our favor on this one.

Cosidering what we have gotten for past 2nd and 3rd round picks, Buchanan is the best. I mean Gaffney and Pitts and the others are good, but Buchanan is close to a pro bowl level player. I agree that this is one of the best run teams in the league. I mean with the exception of the Patriots and a few others, most of the teams in the league have had salary cap problems of had some sort of problems.

DLmen tend to do well into their mid-30's
I don't think there's a tendency at all for d-linemen to "do well" into their mid 30's. If you're calling mid-30's from 34-36 years old you're not going to find many DLs even left in the league. There may be more but the few in the AFC that come to mind that are probably in that age group are Kimo, Ted Washington, and Raylee Johnson. That's out of what, maybe 60 or so starting d-linemen? I'm sure if you looked it up you would find several in the 30-32 age range in the league but I bet you'll find a sharp dropoff in numbers after that. Sure, some d-linemen play into their mid-30's and some even play well --there are several examples (Ted W. et al) but that's usually an exception and not a rule.

Ware or Merriman would provide nice depth behind Peek, but if we want a guy with elite pass rush ability, we'll have to take him in the first at the expense of O-Line help and WR help, since there aren't any good pass rushers in the 3rd round...I think a 1st round WR or OLB would be better than an OT in the first, but that's JMO...

Do you think if we traded with St.louis and picked up their 2nd rounder we could get Clayton and either Spencer or Baas? that's kinda what I want to see. The Philly trade looks good to but can you get an impact player for next year with the 35th?. If not Clayton or Williamson in the first I like Mathis in the 3rd, he could be in that 30%

I can't see why St. Louis would want to trade up unless Barron was taken in the top 10...Maybe we could trade down with KC and get a 3rd or possibly we could trade with Baltimore or Jacksonville since Baltimore wants Williamson and Jacksonville wants a young RB and an OT...If we could get an extra 2nd, that would be awesome...Then we could do as you said and take Clayton and address O-Line in the second...I like that idea...

I dont know why I wrote down St.Louis instead of K.C. maybe because I liked the St.Louis trade a week or two ago. Thanks for picking up on that for me.
I just got home for work and I can barley think straight.
P.S. I really like Baas, I just think McKinny is our most easily upgradable(worst) player on the offense.

Buchanon has Pro Bowl potential but he is very far from it. He has the physical tools to be a great CB, but we have to untrain his bad habits.
