Default Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

Please bear with me if it takes a while.
I don't think I have time to upload all the screenshots to photobucket and then transfer them here, even though I've already have the first half covered and stored on my PC.
Maybe somebody like Ellisunit or TK, or Wolf, or badboy, or Lucky can do that.

Any question and different view are welcome.
My hope is to shed a light, not to cloudy the water!

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

Schaub was hospitalized during the week.
They drained fluid out of his knee.
The report was that there was nothing structurally wrong with it.
But he did miss some practice.

N.Folk kicks 63 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 7. J.Jones to HST 19 for 12 yards (D.Coleman, J.McKnight).
Houston Texans at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:54)

1-10-HST 19 (14:54) (Shotgun) M.Schaub scrambles right end to HST 22 for 3 yards (B.Pool).
Texans in empty shotgun spread;
Jets with 4-man front, nickel package (2 LBs)
They showed a 3-deep safety look and stayed with it and rushed 4.
Underneath, I'm not quite sure whether it was zone or "man with a LB in the hole".
The Texans ran 3 short and 2 intermediate routes.
The 3 underneath routes were right into (or toward) the landmarks in the zones, little wonder none was open.
(The reason I think it was zone was due to the fact that a LB (McIntosh) was on AJ.)
While Schaub saw that the underneath routes were covered, he also saw that there were an open lane between RG and RT so he took off.
The other LB (Harris) who was in the hole (with no receiver near him) fell as he tried to come up as Schaub started scrambling out of the pocket.
Schaub would have done better if he had "semi" bring his throwing arm up (showing a possible throw on the run) to freeze the LCB who was covering Anderson in the flat.
Since he didn't, the SS Pool quickly left Anderson to come up, forcing Schaub to slide early after a shorrt gain of 3 yards (which wasn't too shabby.)

2-7-HST 22 (14:20) A.Foster up the middle to HST 26 for 4 yards (S.Ellis, D.Harris).
Texans showed a run weak side from the offset I, but Foster cut back for 4.
It was possible that he can gain a little more if he had stayed the course and let the blockings develop.
He had to make the decision "on the fly" and it was a 4-yd gain, so this wasn't a knock on him.
It gave the Texans a very manageable 3rd and 3.

3-3-HST 26 (13:36) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short left to K.Walter (A.Cromartie).

Texans were in 3-WR set; Walter split left, Anderson slot left, AJ split right.
Jets loaded the line, threatening blitz.
They showed man coverage (with the nickel playing off the slot Anderson); the lone safety shaded to his left to help double team AJ.
It wasn't a surprise that Schaub went to Walter who ran a wheel route, stuttle stepping a couple time before coming back.
RCB Cromartie had good coverage and broke off the pass which Schaub left inside about shoulder high where it was easiest for the CB to defend, IMHO.
It was a good idea to go with single coverage; however, I think a pass to the outside would have been better.
An option was to go all-out deep.
As Walter stuttle step the first time, he had already broken the cushion of the defender; a long pass would have been quite interesting.
Another option for Schaub was Anderson in the slot as the nickle back had played off-man and the Texans only needed 3 for a first down.
A quick strike on a slant right there would have been very difficult to defend.
Don't trust me? It won't be long before you see how the Jets beat us with that slant all day long.

4-3-HST 26 (13:29) M.Turk punts 33 yards to NYJ 41, Center-J.Weeks. J.Leonhard to HST 29 for 30 yards (T.Nolan).

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

A short punt and a good return gave the Jets the ball at the Texans 29
New York Jets at 13:15

1-10-HST 29 (13:15) M.Sanchez pass short right to S.Holmes pushed ob at HST 22 for 7 yards (G.Quin).
Quin was doing the shuffle and couldn't react back quickly enough.

2-3-HST 22 (12:58) L.Tomlinson left guard to HST 18 for 4 yards (A.Smith). R1
Jets tried a run left guard, but Okoye, Mario, and Sharpton shut it down.
LT cut back to the other side to gain 4 and a first down.
Smith needs to get off the TE quicker for a much better reult..

1-10-HST 18 (12:19) #16 Smith lined up at QB. L.Tomlinson left guard to HST 19 for -1 yards (K.Bentley).
Jets in wild cat formation.
Good penetration by Antonio hindered the path of the pulling RG.
Bentley was free to make the tackle in the backfield.

2-11-HST 19 (11:43) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short left to L.Tomlinson.
Mario pushed the LT into/toward Sanchez, forcing the QB to take a step back and threw off-target, out of bound toward LT. Sharpton was in good coverage.

3-11-HST 19 (11:38) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short middle to D.Keller.
For some reason, the TE wasn't ready as the ball hit his chest and bounced off harmlessly.
Probably wouldn't be enough for the first down anyway as Pollard was drawing near.
(Unless Pollard was to miss the tackle.)

4-11-HST 19 (11:32) N.Folk 37 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-S.Weatherford.
HST 0 NYJ 3, 6 plays, 10 yards, 1:47 drive, 3:32 elapsed

Here, the defense bailed out poor special team play early.

N.Folk kicks 58 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 12. J.Jones to HST 22 for 10 yards (J.Ihedigbo).
Houston Texans at 11:28, (1st play from scrimmage 11:24)

The Texans gained 24 yds on 3 plays.
The O-line failed Foster, however, on 3 consecutive running plays that netted just 2 yards total.

4-8-HST 48 (7:48) M.Turk punts 45 yards to NYJ 7, Center-J.Weeks. J.Leonhard to NYJ 16 for 9 yards (D.Sharpton, T.Nolan

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

New York Jets at 7:36

1-10-NYJ 16 (7:36) S.Greene left guard to NYJ 18 for 2 yards (S.Cody).

A good jump by Cushing cutting off the lead blocker in the backfield, forcing a cut back by Greene.
Good job by Cody sustaining the double team to make the tackle.
Sharpton was also up there, not allowing Greene to cut back further.

2-8-NYJ 18 (6:57) M.Sanchez pass deep right to S.Holmes ran ob at NYJ 40 for 22 yards [B.Cushing]. P2

Looks like the Texans were in a 3 underneath-3 deep zone, rushing 5.

Quin dropped back deep (27 yds plus) in the shuffle and couldn't react to the cut by Holmes to the outside.

From time to time, the Texans would show a single safety, then drop the 2 CBs to form a 3-deep zone.

[b](Cushing and Okoye were closing in on an almost sack.)[/B
]Here, I think the shuffle hurt Quin, especially when he dropped that deep on 2nd and 8.

Timeout #1 by NYJ at 06:24.

1-10-NYJ 40 (6:24) M.Sanchez pass incomplete deep left to B.Edwards (K.Jackson).

Texans were in a 4-3 zone with the 2 CBS dropping deep together with FS Nolan.

In super slo-mo, Jackson might have gotten away with being a hair early on the hit when he jarred the ball loose from the receiver.
And I only say "might have", not "defintely".
It was a bang-bang play and the camera angle is not perfect.
Even if the Jets want to challenge for a replay (and they didn't - and Edwards wasn't fuming), I don't think the ref can reverse the call.

Hey, but most importantly, Jackson was in good position while Nolan was a late breaking on the ball.

(Remember that this is another 3-deep zone by the Texans.)
This pass was in Nolan's middle 1/3 zone; it was actually Nolan's responsibility.
Jackson did good stretching his zone to cover for the FS here.
The receiver was somewhere between the hashmarks and the numbers (he was about 14-15 yds from the sideline and about 12-13 yds from the middle of the field).
At the moment the ball arrived, Nolan has yet to cross the hashmarks (a "long way" away from the ball - in his zone.)
That tells you that he was very late, not just a little late.

2-10-NYJ 40 (6:18) S.Greene left tackle to NYJ 41 for 1 yard (M.Williams).

Jets tried a run behind the LT; Antonio did a good job on the LG, getting in the way of the FB's block.
Cushing controlled the edge.
Greene cut back into Mario's waiting arms.

3-9-NYJ 41 (5:39) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass short right to B.Smith to NYJ 45 for 4 yards (J.Allen).

Jets in single back shotgun, TE strong left, double wides, slot right.
Jackson on the TE, Quin in the nickel, McCain at WCB, Allen at SCB.

Good coverage by Quin and McCain on the intermediate routes and a good stunt by Okoye around the edge didn't give Sanchez a lot of time.

He (Sanchez) chose to live to fight another day, dumping off the ball on a check route underneath to Brad Smith who ran a very shallow slant route accross the field..
Easy job for Allen.

4-5-NYJ 45 (5:05) S.Weatherford punts 50 yards to HST 5, Center-T.Purdum, out of bounds.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

A great punt by the Jets went out of bound at the Texans 5.

Houston Texans at 5:00

1-10-HST 5 (5:00) M.Schaub pass incomplete deep right to A.Johnson.

On a 27-yd fly route down the side line, Revis got away with a litttle hold and bump; just enough to slow AJ down a bit as the ball was just out of his reach.

2-10-HST 5 (4:54) A.Foster left end to HST 10 for 5 yards (B.Pool).

3-5-HST 10 (4:13) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass deep right to J.Dreessen to HST 31 for 21 yards (B.Pool). P2

1-10-HST 31 (3:32) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to D.Anderson to HST 34 for 3 yards (B.Pool).

The Jets went with a single safety, putting the SS Pool on the slot receiver Anderson.
Pool did a good job avoiding the pick by Walter to get to the short flat to make the tackle.

2-7-HST 34 (3:05) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short left to K.Walter [V.Gholston].

LG Smith got beat to the inside; Schaub did a good job avoiding the sack and threw the ball away.

Gholston DEFINITELY should have been called for roughing the passer as he spun Schaub around and slammed him to the ground.

3-7-HST 34 (2:59) M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to K.Walter (A.Cromartie).

Schaub ran a bootleg and threw an innacurate pass to Walter (late and behind) who got separation from Cromartie on a slant route from the other side.
As the commentator put it: "if Schaub would had led the receiver, he would have had a completion; but he threw it behind him."

4-7-HST 34 (2:52) M.Turk punts 47 yards to NYJ 19, Center-J.Weeks, fair catch by J.Leonhard.

New York Jets at 2:43

1-10-NYJ 19 (2:43) L.Tomlinson up the middle to NYJ 22 for 3 yards (T.Jamison).

Good job by Mitchell sustaining the double-team in the middle.

2-7-NYJ 22 (2:06) L.Tomlinson left end pushed ob at NYJ 26 for 4 yards (B.Pollard).
PENALTY on HST-M.Anderson, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at NYJ 22 - No Play.
Lined up iith a hand in Neutral Zone.

2-2-NYJ 27 (1:47) M.Sanchez sacked at NYJ 21 for -6 yards (D.Lewis).

Lewis penetrated inside the LG; Sanchez had no chance.

3-8-NYJ 21 (1:10) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short middle to D.Keller. NYJ-D.Woody was injured during the play. His return is Doubtful.

Anderson beat the LT around the edge and had his arms around Sanchez but the QB slipped off his grab and basically threw the ball away.Cushing was in good position for an INT (another reason.)

4-8-NYJ 21 (1:04) S.Weatherford punts 46 yards to HST 33, Center-T.Purdum, downed by NYJ-J.McKnight.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

Houston Texans at 0:52

On their 4th drive, the Texas put it together, covering 67 yards in 11 plays.
Foster scored on a 2yd TD run.

1-10-HST 33 (:52) A.Foster left tackle to HST 38 for 5 yards (J.Leonhard).

2-5-HST 38 (:19) A.Foster left end pushed ob at NYJ 43 for 19 yards (B.Pool).

Slot receiver Anderson put a good block on the SS (who was covering him) while AJ decked RCB Revis downfield to give Foster the edge.
At the start, Foster had to run parallel to the LOS all the way to the outside, giving the FS Pool time to pursue from the other side; otherwise Foster could have scored.

Let's say if D. Brown had done a better job on the LB #58 to allow Foster to go upfield sooner, the safety wouldn't have time to pursue as Revis had lost the edge to AJ.

Here, you can see that a CB's job can be very important in the running game.
I've been saying that it's an underrated part of the game that people don't pay much attention to.
A score is a score, whether it's a run or a pass.

On this play here, Revis gave up the outside, which is a no-no for a CB.
On an end run like this, the CB can find himself to be the last line of the defense.

2nd quarter

1-10-NYJ 43 (15:00) A.Foster right tackle to NYJ 41 for 2 yards (S.Pouha).
2-8-NYJ 41 (14:24) J.Jones right end to NYJ 31 for 10 yards (B.Pool). R4
1-10-NYJ 31 (13:52) A.Foster left tackle to NYJ 25 for 6 yards (D.Harris).
2-4-NYJ 25 (13:11) A.Foster left guard to NYJ 24 for 1 yard (S.Ellis).
3-3-NYJ 24 (12:30) M.Schaub pass short right to A.Foster pushed ob at NYJ 13 for 11 yards (D.Harris). P5
1-10-NYJ 13 (11:59) D.Ward left tackle to NYJ 12 for 1 yard (B.Scott, J.Taylor).

2-9-NYJ 12 (11:26) M.Schaub pass short right to J.Dreessen to NYJ 1 for 11 yards (D.Revis). P6

Here, Revis did well to get off Walter's block just inside the end zone to stop Dreessen just short of the goal line. This shows you the importance of a CB in help defense. His ability to get off the receiver's block is an integral part of a CB's game.
This gave the D a chance, no matter how slim it was.

1-1-NYJ 1 (11:00) D.Ward right end to NYJ 2 for -1 yards (J.Taylor).
2-2-NYJ 2 (10:22) A.Foster left guard for 2 yards, TOUCHDOWN. R7

N.Rackers extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-M.Turk.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

N.Rackers kicks 64 yards from HST 30 to NYJ 6. B.Smith to NYJ 22 for 16 yards (S.McManis, V.Leach).

............

New York Jets at 10:17, (1st play from scrimmage 10:10)

1-10-NYJ 22 (10:10) S.Greene right guard to NYJ 24 for 2 yards (B.Cushing, A.Smith).

Actually, the Jets wanted to run off LT from a 2-TE set.
Mario sustained the double-team LT & TE, setting the edge.
RDT Okoye worked the double-team LG & C, pushing the C into the FB's path.
This set Cushing free to make the tackle as LT tried to cut back.

2-8-NYJ 24 (9:31) M.Sanchez pass short right to L.Tomlinson to NYJ 27 for 3 yards (S.Cody) [A.Smith].

Sanchez tripped on his own off the snap but managed to regain balance and dump the ball to LT for 3.
Mario beat the RT. was held and might have been blocked in the back; otherwise, he would have gotten there.
Antonio beat the LG and knocked the QB down as he released the ball.
Pollard cut off the outside, Cody came back to make the tackle.

3-5-NYJ 27 (8:46) M.Sanchez pass short right to S.Holmes pushed ob at HST 47 for 26 yards (B.Pollard). P3
Penalty on HST-J.Allen, Illegal Use of Hands, declined.

McCain followed the receiver in motion accross the formation, opened up and got beat straight away by the slant route. Holmes got past Quin then got a block from another receiver (B. Smith) who blasted Allen, sending him in the air and into Quin, taking out both defenders.

Either way, the penalty on Allen would have given the Jets a first down anyway.
Here, Allen lost the edge big time. Without Pollard, Holmes would have gone all the way.

1-10-HST 47 (8:29) Direct snap to B.Smith. L.Tomlinson right end to HST 45 for 2 yards (E.Mitchell).
PENALTY on NYJ-B.Edwards, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards, enforced at HST 45.

1-18-NYJ 45 (8:01) M.Sanchez pass incomplete deep left to S.Holmes [B.Cushing].

Texans were in base 34. They would drop into a 4-2 zone.
Originally, you can see Sharpton lining up to the outside on the slot receiver.
That had to be zone coverage.

Sanchez' pass to Holmes was just long as LOLB Cushing was bearing on him.
(I don't think Sanchez even know that Cushing was coming, and Cushing wasn't affecting the pass in any way.)

The X-receiver Holmes lined up outside the number and ran a simple post route right toward Nolan's landmark in the 2-deep zone.
For some mysterious reason, Nolan overran the play; he probaly guessed that Holmes was to cut back toward the corner. He probably think that the O wouldn't run a route right straight at him

Nolan got lucky this time.

2-18-NYJ 45 (7:54) PENALTY on NYJ-D.Ferguson, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at NYJ 45 - No Play.

2-23-NYJ 40 (7:54) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass deep left to P.Turner to HST 39 for 21 yards (K.Jackson).

Similar to Quin earlier in the game, Jackson dropped back into a 3-deep zone from the shuffle (about 24 yds deep) and couldn't react back in time.
He was closer than Quin, but still no cigar.

Announcer "Boy, that deep-out pattern right beyond the corner (Quin who dropped out to the flat underneath) and in front of the safety (Jackson) requires the QB with a gun for an arm. You've got to get the ball there. And that was a laser."

When you put this in slow motion, you can see Jackson's agility and quickness (or if I have time I can put together a series of screen shots that people can play as a slide show).

As Jackson read the QB's throw (and the receiver behind him to the outside), he wasted no motion in his smooth turn to the outside and set his feet to make a form tackle.

I don't know what else a CB can do in this instance as he played it the way his coaches instructed him to do, which is out of the shuffle.

A little higher throw, a little more inside and.or slightly ahead of the receiver, and Jackson would have been able to defend the play.

3-2-HST 39 (7:10) Direct snap to B.Smith. T.Richardson up the middle to HST 37 for 2 yards (M.Williams). R4

Mario set the edge, forcing the RB inside.
He then make the tackle
by wrapping the runner at the feet as Bentley came up to put on a hit.
Richardson managed to squirm to one side and barely got the first down.
Betntley's hit was good; too bad, it wasn't enough to stop the conversion

1-10-HST 37 (6:41) M.Sanchez pass deep left to B.Edwards to HST 10 for 27 yards (J.Allen). P5

From the slot, Edwards beat Allen quickly with a double move to get inside position on the crossing route for 27 yards. Too easy!

1-10-HST 10 (5:59) L.Tomlinson right tackle to HST 4 for 6 yards (D.Sharpton).

SDE Smith got hooked to the inside by the TE (this is bad).
Sharpton barely got a piece of LT. He needs to be a little better, but the main culprit here was Smith.
Wilson overran the play, what else is new!

2-4-HST 4 (5:22) M.Sanchez pass short right to B.Edwards for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN. P6

McCain played off-man.
Edwards scored easily on a simple quick slant as McCain was nowhere near to defend the route.Zero coverage (blitzing with 7) and playinng off-man is not a good combination near the goal-line, Frankie B!

N.Folk extra point is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-S.Weatherford.
HST 7 NYJ 10, 10 plays, 78 yards, 4:59 drive, 9:42 elapsed

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

N.Folk kicks 62 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 8. J.Jones to HST 17 for 9 yards (J.Ihedigbo, B.Smith).

Houston Texans at 5:18, (1st play from scrimmage 5:12)

1-10-HST 17 (5:12) A.Foster left end to HST 17 for no gain (B.Scott).

The Texans went with a questionable blocking scheme.
They put Walter outside of D. Brown to block 97 OLB C. Pace (this guy is about 270 lbs)
No surprise Pace pushed Walter back into the way of the pulling D. Brown and the FB Leach.

This forced Foster to go wide.
LT Brown was able to get out and hook his man; however, Leach was slowed down considerably and couldn't get to Revis.

Revis' presence didn't afford Foster to go down the side line; it also gave the pursuit (B. Scott) time to make the play.

Again, here you can see the importance of a CB in tutting off the edge.

2-10-HST 17 (4:34) M.Schaub pass incomplete deep right to K.Walter.

Walter beat Revis on a simple fly route down the side line as Revis allowed a free outside release.
On such a route, the CB is truly in one-on-one with the receiver.
Schaub delivered a perfect pass 40 yds downfield to the receiver in stride.

Walter dropped the ball. The sun probably played a factor as Walter was coming out of the sahded are into the sunny portion of the field and looking back directly toward the sun.

With a catch, the momentum would have carried Walter at least another 5 yards for at least a 45-yd gain.
(The Texans would have the ball at the Jets 38, at the least.)
And people are complaining about Jackson's technique and speed?

3-10-HST 17 (4:28) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to J.Jones.

On a slant route, Schaub's pass was a little high; it might have bounced off JJ's fingertips (small hands didn't help here.)

AJ was open; he had outran Revis on a slant route from the opposite side.
He had a good shot to go all the way as the two safeties were naturally drawn to Jacoby's side due to the pass pattern.

Walter and JJ lined up on the right; both ran crossing route to the left (where AJ originally lined up).

4-10-HST 17 (4:22) M.Turk punts 31 yards to HST 48, Center-J.Weeks, fair catch by J.Leonhard.

We had a lot of chance on offense; we just didn't capitalize on them either by our own doing or with the NO-HELP from the officiating.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

Another short punt (31 yards) by Turk gave the ball to the Jets and their 48.

New York Jets at 4:13

1-10-HST 48 (4:13) S.Greene left end pushed ob at HST 42 for 6 yards (E.Wilson).

The Jets ran a sweep.
The LT pulled around the TE to block Bentley.

The LG helped the TE with a little snudge on SDE A. Smth before pulling around him to the outside (he will block Cushing).
Smith lost the edge to the TE (Again, BAD!)

The slot receiver pushed nickel Quin back hard and in the way of Cushing (who was filling the outside gap.)
He (the slot receiver) then came back quickly to help the pulling LG doouble-teaming Cushing.
Looks like he (the receiver) got away with a hold on the Cush.
This gave the LG time to pull and slow down Cushing.

Quin then missed a tackle near the side line.
Saved by Wilson!

2-4-HST 42 (3:45) S.Greene right guard to HST 39 for 3 yards (E.Mitchell).

Designed play for Cushing to curl to the outside to set the edge, turning the runner in.
Mitchell made the tackle.

3-1-HST 39 (3:11) S.Greene up the middle to HST 30 for 9 yards (E.Wilson). R7

Greene found the crease and somehow managed to ellude Cushing at the LOS.
Bentley filled the wrong gap
.

1-10-HST 30 (2:27) S.Greene left end to HST 31 for -1 yards (D.Sharpton).

The Jets tried a sweep; they optioned Mario to pull both the TE and LT.
Mario shot 7 yards downfield, forcing the runner to go wide.

Pollard and Jackson cut off the outside.

Greene made a nice cut back to the inside.

However, Sharpton and Lewis were both ready as they sandwiched him.

Two-Minute Warning

2-11-HST 31 (2:00) M.Sanchez pass incomplete deep left to D.Keller [B.Pollard].
PENALTY on HST-B.Pollard, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards, enforced at HST 31 - No Play. X8

On a blitz, Pollard came in unblocked to deck Sanchez but was called for a helmet-to-helmet infraction. Replay showed that the ref missed the call as Pollard was up high and wasn't really leading with his helmet (the helmets barely snudge each other, if at all.)

Cushing was also near.
The Jets would have faced 3rd and 11.
They would likely ended up with a FG (just a longer one), so the penalty didn't matter.

1-10-HST 16 (1:56) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass short left to L.Tomlinson pushed ob at HST 19 for -3 yards (K.Bentley)

Bentley read the screen well and snuffed it at the bud.

2-13-HST 19 (1:48) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass short right to D.Keller to HST 15 for 4 yards (K.Bentley).

Allen slipped slightly in the nickel as the slot receiver got a little separation but Sanche have just turned away to go to the other side to the TE Keller.

3-9-HST 15 (1:07) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short right to S.Holmes.

Holmes ran a slant behind the back of the ref with Allen chasing.
Allen got away with a push in the back.
Holmes stumbled and was furious, but the side judge can't see it either as Holmes was running toward him, obstructing the view.

Announcer: "Holmes wants a penalty but it's not forthcoming."
Commentator: "I don't think there's any question that Holmes and his pattern was disturbed."

But, hey. This is why I've always said I wanted our CBs to push the envelopes.
You've just got to pick your spot. They are doing it all over the NFL

4-9-HST 15 (1:02) N.Folk 33 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-S.Weatherford.

HST 7 NYJ 13, 8 plays, 33 yards, 1 penalty, 3:15 drive, 14:02 elapsed

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

N.Folk kicks 62 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 8. J.Jones to HST 31 for 23 yards (K.Wilson, J.Ihedigbo).

With all 3 time-outs remained, the Texans needed some 40 yards for a 48yd-FG try; they almost got there; except poor clock management denied the offense at least 2 more passing plays.

1-10-HST 31 (:52) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to D.Anderson.

Ball a little low, but Anderson dropped a quite catchable pass in the zone.
It would have been a gain of about 7-8 yards.
Walter was wide open in the middle, perhaps for a first down, or close to it.

2-10-HST 31 (:47) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short left to A.Johnson to HST 37 for 6 yards (D.Harris; K.Wilson)
.
A quick short pass to AJ in the underneath zone. The Jets converged quickly.

Timeout #1 by HST at 00:38.

3-5-HST 37 (:38) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to A.Johnson to HST 41 for 5 yards (E.Smith). P8

Jets dropped 8 into coverage.
Schaub couldn't find anything deep so he settled for AJ underneath for a first down.
AJ had to reach for the ball and didn't have the balance to get out of bound.
Too bad, it would have saved a time-out.

Timeout #2 by HST at 00:29.

1-10-HST 41 (:29) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short left to A.Foster to NYJ 39 for 20 yards (J.Ihedigbo). P9

Good blocking and a nice run by Foster on a screen pass.
The Texans only needed another 8 yards for a 48-yd FG try, but they wasted at least 14 seconds plus the time that Schaub had to hurry to get off the next play, which resulted in an incompletion while losing another 4 seconds off the clock.

1-10-NYJ 39 (:06) (No Huddle, Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to A.Johnson (D.Revis).

Revis got away with murder. AJ started with a skinny post and ran accross Revis' face.
The CB do a 45 degree shuffle and reached out with both hands to pushed off on AJ 's chest way past the 5-yd limit.
A throw over the top here still would have gotten the job done.
Schaub also had Dreessen wide open on a slant that would have put the Texans somewhere around the 30 yard line, and likely closer than that.

2-10-NYJ 39 (:01) (Shotgun) M.Schaub sacked at NYJ 47 for -8 yards (B.Thomas).
Winston got beat off the edge.

Texans trailed 7-13 at the half.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

2nd Half

N.Rackers kicks 59 yards from HST 30 to NYJ 11. B.Smith to NYJ 35 for 24 yards (J.Allen; N.Rackers).

New York Jets at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:55)

A 24-yd return gave the Jets good field position at their 35.
The Jets got away with a hold; McMannis took on a blocker who then held him as the runner was going by; the blocker than pushed him (Mcmanis) in the back for good measure.

1-10-NYJ 35 (14:55) M.Sanchez pass short left to S.Holmes to NYJ 47 for 12 yards (K.Jackson) [K.Bentley].

With the Jets showed a 2-WR split, the Texans played a single safety while both Jackson and Quin playing off-man and doing the shuffle, dropping back into a 3-deep, 3-underneath zone.
Again, it was just too difficult for a CB to react back as he dropped back into the deep zone from the shuffle on such a come-back route.
The underneath defender have got to stretch further back especially if there's no other receiver in his zone.

In this case, the Texans sent 5 on a zone blitz (dropping Mario into coverage underneath on Jackson' side.)
There was no other receiver to this side of the field as the RB went the other way.
RDE Mario worked back to the hook/curl area then dropped out to the flat.

In Wade's system I learned that the DE or OLB would be aware of the WR on his side and worked to get back to help in coverage against that receiver.
In going to the hook/curl zone, he would look at the receiver to see where he was going. That way, if he saw that the receiver was running slant, he would stayed to cut off that route. If he ses that the WR was running a deeper route, he would stretch his zone back to follow that receiver; in this case, he would be able to help the come-back route.

Instead, the Texans underneath defender too often were covering grass; the Texans might as well send him in on the blitz.

1-10-NYJ 47 (14:16) L.Tomlinson right tackle to NYJ 47 for no gain (K.Bentley).

Excellent push and penetration by Cody.
Again, Mario set the edge, taking on the double-team TE/RT, cutting off the outside. They combined to give Bentley a clear view of the running lane int between.

2-10-NYJ 47 (13:38) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short right to S.Holmes (G.Quin).

Texans blitzed 6; Bentley beat the RG, forcing Sanchez to hurry his throw as he was ready to be decked.
Quin was playing off-man, squatting in the outside flat, a good position to see what was going down and jump to break off the pass.

3-10-NYJ 47 (13:33) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez scrambles right end pushed ob at HST 41 for 12 yards (B.Cushing). R10

A 6-man blitz forced Sanchez to scramble. He gained 12 yards and ran out of the bound.
Either Antonio lost containment or he was held, I can't say for sure.

1-10-HST 41 (13:05) S.Greene right tackle to HST 40 for 1 yard (D.Sharpton; S.Cody).

A great, great push by Mitchell on the double team C & RG; he pushed both of them into the running lane, forcing the back wide.
This gave the D time to fill the gap as Sharpton made the tackle.
Antonio wasn't bad, but he lost it just slightly. A better job by Smith would have made for a lost of yardage.

2-9-HST 40 (12:28) M.Sanchez pass short right to S.Holmes to HST 28 for 12 yards (G.Quin). P11

Texans in cover 2.
LCB Quin was doing the shuffle and allowed Holmes to gain 12 yards and the first down easily.
The shuffle didn't help him here as he stumbled slightly.
Iit wouldn't have mattered anyway, it's just difficult to react back to a quick outside cut from the shuffle.
Guys like Allen who had used the technique since college are more comfortable with it.

1-10-HST 28 (11:47) B.Smith right end to HST 27 for 1 yard (B.Pollard, D.Sharpton).

The Jets ran a reverse to the weak side toward Mario.
They pulled the TE from the other side to block Mario; it was a big mistake.
Mario blew him up 5yd deep in the back field, forcing the runner wide.
This gave Pollard and Sharpton time to pursue from inside out.

2-9-HST 27 (11:01) M.Sanchez sacked at HST 35 for -8 yards (M.Williams).

Jets tried a naked bootleg back toward Mario.
Again, it was a big mistake.
Mario avoided the FB's block to chase Sanchez toward the side line and sacked him.

Because the FB had to at least try to shadow Mario for a little bit, he wasn't able to get out quickly.
This gave Pollard a hair more time to cover the FB.

Pollard's coverage on the FB, in turn, didn't allow Sanchez to attempt a wild throw as not to risk an INT with nothing but green grass for Pollard to roam.
(Remember, this was a naked bootleg. There was nobody on this side besides the QB and Mario was about to devour him; Sanchez wouldn't have been able to get up, let alone trying to chase after the INT.)

The sack pushed the Jets out of FG range, pending a 3rd and 17.

FLASH NEWS: Up to this point, Mario's 46 sacks ranked 4th in the NFL since 2006.

3-17-HST 35 (10:24) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short left to S.Holmes.

Jets in single back shotgun spread; 2 WRs on each side.
Texans in 4-man wide front (the Center was uncovered).

LDT Okoye attacked the B gap, pushing the pocket, taking the RG to the outside.
This allowed LDE Mario room to stunt to the inside (after faking an outside move), destroying the pocket.

Okoye also split the RT & RG to clamp in from the outside.

Sanchez managed to scramble out of the pocket to his right as Okoye stumbled trying to reach for him.
Unfortunately, this stopped Mario's pursuit.

RDE Anderson (who had stunted inside behind RDT Smith) chased hotly and forced Sanchez to pull the ball back (Sanchez had set up, wanting to go deep right, toward Allen and Quin.)

Sanchez scranbled up the middle and even on the run, was still able to throw a dart down the middle, right at the first down marker to Holmes (and in between the numbers).

Jackson was in step with the receiver, however, and gave him a shot to knock the ball out.
Either that or he had a hand on the ball;
one way or another, Jackson had tight coverage on Holmes throughout all this madness.

The Jets tried a 53-yd FG that fell short of the goal post (that would be at least 5 yards short.)

Houston Texans at 10:08
The Texans had good field position at their 43.

1-10-HST 43 (10:08) M.Schaub pass short left to J.Casey to HST 46 for 3 yards (C.Pace).

The RDE reacted well to the screen pass to Casey.

2-7-HST 46 (9:33) A.Foster right guard to HST 49 for 3 yards (C.Pace, S.Pouha).

W. Smith pulled from LG but wasn't able to get a clean block on the LB.
This stopped Foster temporarily in his track, allowing the defenders to get to him after a short gain.

3-4-HST 49 (8:57) M.Schaub pass incomplete short middle to A.Johnson.

Schaub, with time, somehow threw the ball low to an open AJ in some sort of a zone.
Incomplete.

4-4-HST 49 (8:52) M.Turk punts 43 yards to NYJ 8, Center-J.Weeks, fair catch by J.Leonhard.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

New York Jets at 8:44

1-10-NYJ 8 (8:44) S.Greene right tackle to NYJ 12 for 4 yards (B.Pollard).

The Jets got a little push on the Texans LDE (looks like the Texans had some sub in there as both Mario and Antonio were on the side line.)

2-6-NYJ 12 (8:06) M.Sanchez pass short right to B.Edwards to NYJ 25 for 13 yards (G.Quin). P12

Quin tried to jam the receiver. Edwards simply blew him away to the outside and cut in for a simple slant that gained 13. (The commentator used the term "discarded".)

1-10-NYJ 25 (7:27) S.Greene left tackle to NYJ 37 for 12 yards (K.Jackson). R13

Cushing and Sharpton lost containment.
Sharpton went a little too wide on the edge (it could be by design.)
Cushing was a little hesitant to fill the outside gap as Bentely took on a blocker inside.
Commentator: "A rare big hole for the Jets. Cushing just misread where he was supposed to fill... came in a little tight (meaning, a little bit too far to the inside instead of outside of Bentley).

The runner went up along the hashmarks, just to one side; ie., inside - this is where the safety Nolan should have come down to support the run, especially since there was no receiving threat deep.

The fact that Jackson (who was further away to where the play started and where it went) got there ahead of Nolan and even got down into a good stance to make the tackle showed that Nolan was quite late in his read and reaction.

1-10-NYJ 37 (6:53) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short middle to S.Greene.

Both Quin and Jackson had good coverage on their man.
Sanchez looked and looked then decided to dump the ball to the hot route, the RB out of the backfield.
Bentley was over Greene, incompletion!

Commentator "Sanchez was really trying to force it in there".

2-10-NYJ 37 (6:46) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short left to S.Holmes.

Mario and Smith back in at DEs.
The Texans dropped into a 3-4 zone.

Slot receiver Holmes ran a quick out to the flat; Pollard followed him (Pollard was on his way to the outside zone.)

Looks like Sanchez could have completed the pass but for some reason he hurried the ball a little bit and overthrew the receiver.
The fact that Mario had beaten the RT so quickly might have something to do with it.
Either that or Sanchez was expecting Holmes to get out there sooner (perhaps, but not as likely a scenario, or maybe both.)

3-10-NYJ 37 (6:42) (Shotgun) M.Sanchez pass short right to L.Tomlinson pushed ob at HST 45 for 18 yards (G.Quin). P14

McCain missed the tackle in the zone that would have stopped LT shor of the first down.
He would have done better concentrating on not letting LT get to the outside.

Too bad, a double stunts by the Texans had forced Sanchez to throw the ball quickly.
RDE Mario took on the triple-team to allow RDT Smith to get free on the outside.
(Mario also split the triple-team right away.)
On the other side, LDE Anderson spin inside to give LDT Okoye room to loop around the edge.

It was a wasted opportunity to stop them for NO SCORE.

1-10-HST 45 (6:12) S.Greene right end to HST 42 for 3 yards (K.Bentley, B.Pollard).

Smith missed a tackle at the LOS.

2-7-HST 42 (5:30) S.Greene up the middle to HST 41 for 1 yard (T.Jamison).

From a 3-4 alignment, ROLB Jamison came in and blew the FB right into the RB Greene.

3-6-HST 41 (4:47) M.Sanchez pass short right to S.Holmes for 41 yards, TOUCHDOWN. P15

McCain lost his footing and fell down as Holmes planted his foot showing an outside move, but quickly cut back to the inside on a slant.

Nolan missed a tackle at the 10 yard line as Holmes gave him a stiff arm.
It was not an easy task for Nolan as he was frozen inside, looking to help Pollard on the TE.
But he definitely was still in position to bring the runner down, maybe pulling him down around the 5.

Sorry, but I can't believe somebody called McCain a cover corner!

N.Folk extra point is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-S.Weatherford.
HST 7 NYJ 20, 9 plays, 92 yards, 4:06 drive, 10:22 elapsed

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

N.Folk kicks 68 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 2. J.Jones to HST 16 for 14 yards (J.McKnight; B.Smith).

Houston Texans at 4:38, (1st play from scrimmage 4:34)

1-10-HST 16 (4:34) M.Schaub pass incomplete deep right to A.Johnson (J.Leonhard).

Texans in offset I right, TE left, 2 WRs on the right (JJ inside slot, AJ outside slot).

It was difficult to tell what kind of coverage the Jets were in, maybe an inverted cover 2?
(It was also quite possible that the Jets played with 10 men on the field, unless they wre inverted cover 2, because I can't see the other CB Cromartie).

The safety 35 Leonhard lined up near the LOS on AJ
Revis was just outside of him, about 7 yards off the LOS.

What I can see was JJ running a straight seam route down along the hashmarks (with Revis following him).

AJ ran a delay route, started to go behind JJ then cut back to the outside 17 yd down field.
There was nobody on him.

Leonhard started out looking for Leach who ran out to the right flat; but then he (Leonhard) quickly got back and just barely tipped the ball away.
The other safety Pool then can be seen coming over from the middle of the field.

(If Cromartie was in there, he probably help Revis bracketing JJ deep, but you can't see the far side deep in the picture. I only mention this because it seems to be a rather odd scheme.)

At any rate, Schaub probably thought that Leonhard would stay on Leach such that there's a wide open passing lane so he didn't bother to get the ball up a little higher.

Remember that AJ was nearly 5 yards behind Leonhard; Schaub had all the room he needed over the top to throw a simple pass.

And if JJ can throw a decent block downfield, that would have been a TD easily.
Too bad, as it was, Leonhard tipped the ball away.

2-10-HST 16 (4:27) M.Schaub pass short left to A.Foster pushed ob at HST 11 for -5 yards (B.Scott).

The Jets read the screen too well. Three guys converged quickly on Foster.

3-15-HST 11 (3:58) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to J.Jones.

Looks like a miscommunication between JJ and Schaub.

Cromartie had good coverage anyway; it would have been short of a first down since the Texans needed a whole 15 yards.

4-15-HST 11 (3:53) M.Turk punts 45 yards to NYJ 44, Center-J.Weeks. K.Wilson to NYJ 45 for 1 yard (D.Sharpton).

Before the punt, it was disclosed that Turk had been battling a right hip injury for 2 weeks.
That explained the spotty punting, I guess!

New York Jets at 3:41

1-10-NYJ 45 (3:41) Direct snap to B.Smith. L.Tomlinson right guard to 50 for 5 yards (K.Bentley, A.Okoye).

NT Cody lost the battle.
LDE Mario contained the edge and got a piece of LT who stumbled forward to gain 5 before RDT Okoye and Bentley converged.
LT would have stumbled right ino the back of the C had Cody been able to sustain the block.

2-5-50 (2:58) L.Tomlinson right guard to HST 46 for 4 yards (A.Smith).

LDE Smith penetrated a bit too deep, but was able to turn back to make the tackle, but not before LT gained 4.

3-1-HST 46 (2:21) L.Tomlinson up the middle to HST 46 for no gain (B.Cushing, A.Okoye)

LDE Mario and LDT Okoye shut off the POA.
Cushing was lining up on the LOS and was optioned; he would pursued unblocked from the back side behind the LOS to make the tackle for no gain.

4-1-HST 46 (1:39) S.Weatherford punts 37 yards to HST 9, Center-T.Purdum, fair catch by J.Jones.

It certainly seems to me that Mario did nothing but help stopping plays.

Houston Texans at 1:30
The Texans got the ball at their 9.

A good punt by the Jets set the Texans back at their own 9.

1-10-HST 9 (1:30) A.Foster right tackle to HST 19 for 10 yards (M.Devito). FUMBLES (M.Devito), RECOVERED by NYJJ.
Leonhard at HST 21. J.Leonhard to HST 22 for -1 yards (D.Anderson).
Foster gained some 8 yards before gave up the ball on a rare fumble.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

Unfortunately, the fumble set up the Jets at the Texans 22-yd line.
The Texans D would hold them to a FG, but it was a long battle uphill.

New York Jets at 1:19

1-10-HST 22 (1:19) M.Sanchez pass short right to T.Richardson to HST 16 for 6 yards (K.Bentley).

PENALTY on HST-D.Sharpton, Illegal Contact, 5 yards, enforced at HST 22 - No Play. X16

Sharpton committed a double whammy.
He hit Holmes really hard 7yds from the LOS )it's a good idea to try to help your secondary, but you need to do it earlier, rookie). And because of that, he was a little late geeting out to his zone in the flat.

1-10-HST 17 (:53) S.Greene right tackle to HST 15 for 2 yards (E.Mitchell; K.Bentley).

Texans in 34
From the back side of the play, RDE Mitchell took the LT all the way to the other side into the running lane.
On play side, LDE Jamison controlled the edge by sustaining the RG's block.
Bentley came up unblocked to join Mitchell in the tackle.

2-8-HST 15 (:16) M.Sanchez pass short right to D.Keller to HST 12 for 3 yards (J.Allen).

Allen made the tackle in his outside zone as the TE ran a quick out to the flat.

END OF QUARTER
............

Fourth Qtr

3-5-HST 12 (15:00) M.Sanchez pass incomplete short middle to D.Keller (T.Nolan).

TE Keller ran a quick hook up the middle right in front of Nolan.
Good reaction by Nolan as he came down to put a hit on the TE, jarring the ball loose.

4-5-HST 12 (14:54) N.Folk 30 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-S.Weatherford.

HST 7 NYJ 23, 4 plays, 10 yards, 1 penalty, 1:28 drive, 0:09 elapsed

Here, Allen and Nolan atone themselves by helping the D to give up but 10 yards.
The Jets were already in FG range to start with.

Default Re: Week 11 at Jets game breakdown

N.Folk kicks 64 yards from NYJ 30 to HST 6. J.Jones to HST 22 for 16 yards (J.McKnight, D.Coleman).

Houston Texans at 14:51, (1st play from scrimmage 14:46)

1-10-HST 22 (14:46) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass deep middle to J.Dreessen to NYJ 47 for 31 yards (E.Smith). P10

1-10-NYJ 47 (14:16) (No Huddle, Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short left to A.Foster pushed ob at NYJ 33 for 14 yards (B.Pool). P11

Texans sent a swing pass to Foster on the left.
In a rare appearance, nickel back Kyle Wilson promptly missed a tackle at the LOS.
Revis then missed a tackle just before Foster got to the first down marker.
The safety came down to push Foster out of bound after a 14yd gain.

Just for fun, this is Kyle Wilson in the dog house shortly afterward:

1-10-NYJ 33 (13:51) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass short right to K.Walter to NYJ 20 for 13 yards (A.Cromartie) [S.Ellis]. P12

Walter caught a pass in front of Cromartie and made him miss to get the first down.

1-10-NYJ 20 (13:15) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete short right to A.Foster.

LDE Price beat Brisiel quickly off the snap; Schaub threw the ball away.
Foster basically let the ball go as he saw a LB ready to pounce. No need for negative yardage.

Commentator "Price hit Schaub on the head and should have been called for a penalty."

This would have given the Texans 1st and 10 at the Jets 5.

2-10-NYJ 20 (13:15) A.Foster left end to NYJ 19 for 1 yard (D.Revis, J.Taylor).
D. Brown a little late getting out on the block.
Foster almost made Revis miss.
(On the other hand, it shows here that the CB can have a big responsibility in run support.)

3-9-NYJ 19 (12:31) (Shotgun) M.Schaub pass incomplete deep left to A.Johnson (D.Revis).

Revis denied AJ the outside, AJ made the adjustment and cut back across his face to the inside.

Too bad, Schaub wasn't on the same page; he threw the ball to the outside.
AJ had no choice but to knock the ball away.

4-9-NYJ 19 (12:24) N.Rackers 38 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-J.Weeks, Holder-M.Turk.

HST 10 NYJ 23, 7 plays, 59 yards, 2:30 drive, 2:39 elapsed
