Default Johnson wouldn't start?

Houston Pro Football has an article on different players that the Texans might draft and how they would effect the team (role they would play and what players they would effect)

Houstonprofootball

They say if we got DJ he wouldn't even make the starting line up. That he would back up Wong on the inside. I don't agree. He is a playmaker, and that is what we need on the field. Leave Wong on the outside, and let DJ start inside and let him make some plays. I doubt he falls to us, but if he does, a top 5 talent, one of the best LB prospects in years and he couldn't start, I just don't see it. What do you think?

Here's the direct quote:

Quote:
ILB Derrick Johnson, Texas
Texans Affected: Kailee Wong, Troy Evans, DaShon Polk, Frank Chamberlin, Zeke Moreno, Shantee Orr, Quincy Monk, Dave Moretti
How He’d Fit: Capers and Vic Fangio would favor Wong’s experience (although he earned it as an outside linebacker, not inside) and leadership, so Johnson would have a hard time breaking into the starting lineup early on. His ability to blitz and cover would gain him reps in the nickel package and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he earned more playing time as the season progressed. He should excel on virtually all of the special team units.
Jersey Number: 55, since his college number, 11, isn’t an NFL linebacker’s number, and 55 is the only linebacker number available. At least 55 is a multiple of 11.
If we got DJ, he may not begin the season as a starter, but by the end of the season he would be, much like Vilma last year...It may take him a little bit to digest the playbook, but I think his production would be hard to deny...If we were to get him and Peek struggled, Wong would likely return outside, paving the way for DJ...It would be a good problem to have...

DJ shouldn't start, I am a total proponent of letting a rookie learn a little before starting when they are playing the LB position. I wouldn't mind that at all. Just look at all the rookie LB's their rookie season, nothing spectacular to look at for the most part.

Casserly has been saying for a while that no matter who we pick if we stay at #13... that they probably wont be a starter for this team right away.

I would have him start from the start, too much talent to sit. Has the speed to make up for an early mistake. It is like Dunta last year. Will have rookie mistakes early, but by the end of the year, you could make a case for an All-Pro nomination. I just think the pros outweigh the cons, on him starting from the begining. (of course, this is probably all for not, since we won't get him anyway)

I think it depends on the player. Vilma did a great job starting as a rookie.

NFL.com on Jonathan Vilma:

"Negatives: Plays like a 250-pounder, but his size does pose limitations, as he will sometimes get washed out and engulfed by bigger blockers … Does not have the bulk needed to consistently stuff blocks … Gets bounced around and covered up some when trying to redirect inside (outside of his size, there are no noticeable flaws in his game)."

NFLdraftcountdown.com on DJ:

"Weaknesses: Could stand to add some weight and bulk up...Struggles to take on blocks...Will ignore his assignment at times in an effort to make a play...Will miss some tackles."

I think people get caught up in the numbers. And forget that a these guys are good football players.

This is just Casserly bong water that he's trying to make us drink. Do we really have that much talent in all the positions? At #13, imo, these guys could start over our existing players...

Barron over Wand

Johnson, Ware, Pollack, Merriman over Wong or whoever's penciled in right now

H. Miller over B. Miller

Davis over Earl or Coleman

Baas over either guard

Matt Jones over Bradford? Probably

So this leads me to believe we're going cornerback for Glenn's future replacement which means Carlos Rogers at #13. This could be but Casserly doesn't show his hand usually so I think we're going OLB Johnson, Ware, Pollack or Merriman.

I don't think he would start right off the bat either. Greenwood is apparently playing the Mac so that would leave Johnson in the Buc. The Buc makes the defensive calls and gets the other players in the right positions. They won't have a rookie in there making the defensive calls on the fly in the first game.

Vinny I think they would move Greenwood to the Buc pos and Johnson would start at the Mac. Wong would move back outside and move Peek back to the Pine. Johnson is smart and would move to the Buc the next year, but you are right Fangio will not have a rookie making the calls early in the year, but I think we are dedicated to putting our best athletes on the field and DJ would be one of our best players off the bat

I think they would have a guy who understands this system completely make the calls at first. Neither Greenwood or Johnson would qualify. It may not be too many games but I seriously doubt your scenario. Capers runs a pretty sophisticated defense so I think Wong would come out as the playcaller at first. Could be wrong...but thats my take.

Vilma didnt start until week 3. So if he can learn, then he should be starting Buc week 3-4.

i think that we have left the expansion team mold, rookie starters are rare on most NFL teams, and we are finally in that group.

DC the kid does not understand our defense so give him a break. But what were you trying to tell me with Vilma starting three weeks into the season. I mean I want DJ to start just not at the BUC position

I agree Johnson should start but not at the BUC position. Johnson has the talent and the drive to become a play maker in the NFL and not just down the road but from the very outset. If he's going to be a "franchise" quality player I think you start him from day one to shorten his learning curve(which I think will be pretty short already) other than perheps Rolle or Edwards, Johnson is the rookie most likely to have a positive impact right away.

I was just answering DRIFTAWAY's question on why Babin started from day one, and why Johnson would take a few weeks into the season to start.

Babin doesnt have to know what all 11 guys are doing, and get them into position like the Buc linebacker would do. And I am hearing that Johnson would play Buc.

Thats all.
