Default Watt Has Packed on 65 pounds in college

Quote:
Von Miller, then and now: How recruits grow (and grow some more) into draft picks, by the numbers

Jon Lee, editor of Texas A&M's official athletics site, dipped into the archives earlier this week to compare Von Miller, the 210-pound freshman who showed up in College Station in 2007, to Von Miller, the 240-pound All-American who was taken with the second overall pick in last week's NFL draft. The difference … well, you can see the difference. Note that Miller's weight-training program as a senior consisted of hauling around his little black book of coed phone numbers, little being the operative word.

By Division I standards, however, the transformation is fairly typical for the 99percent of players who don't arrive on campus looking like a pro from Day 1. Including Miller, more than half of this year's first-round picks gained at least 25 pounds between signing day and draft day, and a handful of the linemen put on twice that. Two of the more unheralded prospects who turned themselves into first-day studs, Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt (a former walk-on who originally signed with Central Michigan; pictured bottom right) and Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder (a converted tight end), added some 65 pounds apiece from the beginning of their careers to the end.

The full accounting of modern strength and conditioning programs is below the jump, with one very clear, very important lesson: Whatever you do in life, never, ever get between Nick Fairley and a buffet. Or between Nick Fairley and anything, really.
Click HERE to view weight comparisons of college recruitment to draft weights of all of the 1st round 2011 picks. Some select "before" and "after" pics (including Watt's) are shown on the link.

Keep in mind, Watt did it in 3 years (early NFL entry) as opposed to 4 years in most other players (including OT Solder), while only adding 1 inch to his vertical dimension.

Does this mean he won't test positive for the weight loss drug hcg? Oh wait.

I didn't want to go there. Hopefully, he is a very well trained athlete rather than an overtrained one.

Watt was a HS senior/college freshman in 2007. So, it was 4 years ago that he tipped the scales at 220 lbs (2008 was a transfer year). It seems like a big jump (and it is) but Watt had the frame to carry the weight. I don't see it out of the ordinary for the weight gain to be natural.

Von Miller looks like a WR in that early pic.

Not arguing with what you've said. Just an interesting further comparison, Solder is 3 inches taller than Watt, and his 65 weight gain is since his freshman year at Colorado in 2006 (5 years).

Meh, I'm not really reading much into it. Watt doesn't look like a 'huge' muscle guy even after the 65 pound addition. Plus he was damn scrawny back in the HS senior picture. 3 years can change a young man' body a lot at this age - as can a more vigrous and specialized training regime. 4 years to develop a frame into a NFL sized body isn't that excessive IMO.

I wish I had the frame to gain 65 pounds of muscle. If I did I'd look like super meat boy.

From Watt's HS All Star Game web page

Watt's official Combine measurements are listed at 6' 5 3/8" (not 6' 6") and 290 (not 280). That being said, the only purpose I had in posting this article was to demonstrate Watt's impressive body transformation through college.

hcg is not a weight loss drug. If anything it is a weight gain in the jumblies drug.

It was an attempt at being funny/sarcastic. HCG has been used as an internet phenomenon weight loss drug which has been deemed unsafe and non-effective by the fda.

Quote:
Homeopathic hCG for weight control

Controversy about, and shortages[19] of, injected hCG for weight loss have led to substantial Internet promotion of "homeopathic hCG" for weight control. The ingredients in these products are often obscure, but if prepared from true hCG via homeopathic dilution, they contain either no hCG at all or only trace amounts.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has stated that this drug is fraudulent and ineffective for weight loss. It is also not protected as a homeopathic drug and has been deemed an illegal substance.[20][21]

According to the studies noted above, the weight loss indicated by individuals on an "hCG diet" can be attributed entirely to the fact that such diets proscribe a consumption rate of 500-550 calorie per day, or approximately one quarter of what is commonly accepted as the daily recommended value for a male adult of average build and activity. Further, double-blind studies note no decrease in appetite by those taking hCG versus individuals on placebos and have offered no evidence that individuals taking hCG are more likely to lose fat than lean tissue. Long-term results caution that unlike individuals participating in a diet of, for example, 1100 calories per day those on a 500 calorie per day diet are unlikely to develop more appropriate eating habits and will gain weight more quickly after the diet has completed.

Aaah, forgot about that since it wasn't the reason it was on the banned list.

Interesting article but I don't find anything unusual about the weights/players. Watt still looks like he could gain 20 more pounds but that's more due to his lanky frame than anything. Besides the obvious places, shoulders, arms and such a lot of muscle weight is gained where you wouldn't automatically think. Your legs can hold a bit of weight, your back especially, your core muscles.

Friend A, about 2 years ago weighed 200 and he's worked hard all the way up to about 250. Looks like a damn gorilla now, couldn't catch a cold but could probably break one in half!!!

Friend B, from about the beginning of this year has put on 30 pounds, admittedly he needs to cut up, lose some of the extra weight but he too has worked hard and put on the muscle.

That's the same picture they used in the article.

Looks kinda small to be a tightend in the first picture. Kind a big for a tight end in the second.

65lbs in 3 years...... 20lbs of muscle/year.... certainly doable.

It's certainly doable without using "extra help", especially if you have a frame as naturally large as Watt's.

On top of that, despite how impressive Watt looks, since he is a defensive lineman I can pretty much guarantee you that not all that 65 pounds is muscle. Though I'm sure that the great majority of it is.

As an example, I have been interning with a college strength and conditioning coach for two years. Not only do I work for him but we work out together on our own time.

I'm only 5'7" so I don't have near the frame that Watt does and I have gone from 150 to 175 in those two years.

It's definitely doable. I won't mention my own gains my 1st year cuz I cheated a little, but one of my brothers gained darn near a 100 lbs in a couple years. He earned a full ride to UTA as an Olineman. Throughout his redshirt year he ate a minimum of 6 times a day and it wasn't apples or nut bars. They stuffed him day in day out with protein, carbs and surely quite a bit of fat. He used to tell me stories of the amounts and portion sizes he had to eat and it took him a couple years to regain his love for beef.

We've got the pictures to prove it. They were included in the photo cd during his funeral and I'm not sure who has it now. But dang, talk about a transformation, he got up to 340lbs before ripping his knee up.
