Default If OTAs began in 2 weeks as scheduled.....

..........610 reports that Kubiak states that Connor, Ryans, Cushing and AJ would be "limited" as concerns their surgery recovery status.

I kinda figured that about Barwin and Meco from your prognosis when they went down. I read over last weekend and posted about AJ being released and "ready to go". I din't know anything about Cush. What did he have to have surgery on?

Cushing had his patella shaved and his knee scoped in January. He and the Texans had evidently put these procedures off for 2 years.

Why would you shave the patella?

From trauma, the back of the patella (knee cap) can be irregularly ground down or chipped. Much like knee joint cartilage which becomes traumatized and irregular, the constant rubbing together of irregular surfaces created leads to progressively more wearing down of the opposing surfaces. Thus the scope to smooth the involved areas.

Yeah, I recall hearing about that back when. Doc, didn't you express some concern with that procedure as well?

With 2 years of known wear and tear essentially ignored and damage allowed to progress, you worry about how much cartilage thickness needed to be removed and how much remains.

Many times, the breakdown of the patella cartilage surface (from a pathologic condition known as patella chondromalacia [chrondro=cartilage; malacia=softening), means that the knee cap is too tight against its opposing surface, or unstable and wiggling around not making normal even contact.......most likely caused by a stretched out patellar tendon of quad tendon (which leads from the patella to the quad muscles). Relatively weak quads can also contribute to this condition.

As we don't know exactly what the extent of damage or surgery was, prognosis is difficult to determine. However, problems related to this condition, even after surgery, tend to be progressive.

McClain keeps saying that Barwin is ready to rumble. Is it Ryans's injury we should be most concerned about?

A blown achilles can be a career ender, so, yes.

Although I don't know the severity of Demeco's particular tear.

The fact that it required surgery is enough to tell you that he is likely never to return to his former self.......extremely forturnate to eventually return to around 80%.

I have alluded to this in the past. In the best NFL oriented medical paper, Epidemiology and outcomes of Achilles tendon ruptures in the National Football League by Parekh (cannot post original article), the numbers are not encouraging.

*Out of the 31 players followed:

**about 1/3 could never return to the NFL

*of the 21 NFL skill players who returned to play:

** games played per season were average over the three seasons before the injury (~12 games/season)and the three seasons after the injury (~6 games/season.

** power rating from three season before injury to three seasons after injury dropped an average of 50%. (The power rating for defenisive players were based on tackles and interceptions.)

Along with these injuries, I'm worried about the players we just drafted. If there's no OTA's, minicamps, and if training camp starts late (or doesn't happen at all) then many of these players are going to be completely lost.

Well i'm sure we at least gave JJ Watt a playbook before they got locked out again.

That doesn't sound good at all. Sounds like we might be looking for a new ILB next year in the draft. Maybe we could trade Demeco soon, after a new CBA, so that we could at least get something in return for him.

Lots of good ILBs available next year- Upshaw and Hightower out of Alabama, Kuechly from BC, Lewis out of OU, and Burfict from ASU all carry potential 1st round grades in my book.

However, it is too early for such speculation. Ryans may return, and he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Also, we cannot trade him prior to the season. Who would play ILB until 2012?

I will say, whatever happens with Ryans, I would be severely disappointed if the Texans do not select an ILB in the 2012 draft. If some underclassmen declare, it could be the best year for the position I have ever seen.

I doubt anybody would want his contract after suffering from that injury. We pretty much have to stick with him and see whether he comes back from injury and is serviceable. I don't think the Texans are that worried, or they feel that Bentley/Sharpton can put together 16 games that aren't terrible because they certainly didn't draft any LB's. Whether this is folly or not remains to be seen, has Demeco been medically cleared?

That Sharpton pick seems like it was pretty good insurance. If he improves from 2010 we may have a viable replacement for Ryans if he doesn't return to form.

Injuries are part of the game, but it seems like a lot of our stars are banged up and fall in to that "who knows if they come back the same" category.

I just hope that AJ playing hurt last year didn't take to much away from his game. The guy deserves a shot at the playoffs at the very least.....

You've got this really bad habit of crapping on my heart! I had no idea the odds of returning to form were that low.
