2012 Mock Drafts

I know it's kind of early, but there isn't much else going on. Here are two brand new 2012 mock drafts:

Umm, 30.New York Jets: Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor - was drafted by the Browns @21 in 2011.

And there's just no way in hell the Broncos pass on Andrew Luck. None.

They have the Texans taking Mark Barron S Alabama. Unfortunately they use the current years draft order.

Right. Taylor was obviously a typo. I wrote this mock over my final 2011 projection. Luck is going #1 like I wrote. You can't project that Tebow is going to be a bust before he even has a season as a starter so you're way off base saying there is no way they would pass.

2nd mock was more interesting to me as he had the courage to actually place the teams where he thought each will draft. I just do not see Texans drafting an OLB. THe only way I could see if either Reed does not work out or Barwin does not come back healthy. IF a vet FA corner is signed for # 1 CB, the pick should be either another DE to add to depth as either Mario or Smith should be gone. I just don't see Williams being offered a long term deal even if he has a great year or gives Houston a huge discount . If he has great year, Texan should franchise tag him and take the picks or work a trade. The other choice I would offer in first round would be a #2 WR unless JJ returns and has the type of season I expect in 2010. I had Jone in pro bowl.

Not saying Tebow's a bust, but he's tradeable. Send him somewhere for a second round pick and take Luck. Luck is a far better prospect than Tebow ever was, and he's the best since Manning. Can't pass on that unless you have a top 5 QB.

Lot of good insight here. I agree that Mario probably won't get the big FA offer next year that he thinks he'll get, I agree they'll most likely franchise him after next season as an OLB, not a DE, since OLB is alot cheaper than DE and the Texans will want to see a 2nd year of good/great production at his new position before offering up that big FA contract. I'm thinking our biggest needs in next years draft will be NT, FS/SS, and ILB to possibly replace Ryans along with depth at WR, and CB. After reading the thread that Cloaknnndagger started about Demeco's injury the prognosis don't sound good. I wouldn't object to a CB in the 1st round next year either as next years draft looks to be a really good one for CB and FS. I'm liking the looks of some of next years NT's as well. If we rely on Mitchell at NT I think we'll get gashed up the middle all season.

Not sure what you are refering to but Texans held their own against the run. I had pushed for big nasty DT but had to admit the lighter tackles did ok. There is a misconception that Okoye was totally worthless and not true. He did little to disrupt QB but held his own against run. Wade supposedly thinks he does not fit 3-4 but I think that rumor came from John McClain.

Earl Mitchell is going to be just the first line of defense, if there is any gashing to be done, meet Mr. Ryans or Cushing, if that doesn't do the job imagine facing a 6'7 278 lb Mario Williams.

Speaking of mock drafts going forward sometimes it's useful to look back. John Harris just did an excellent review of the entire 2007 draft http://thesidelineview.com/ really good stuff, case not closed but three years is a more fair timetable than just post draft reviews which I know are stupid to assign draft grades too but seem conditioned to do so. Anyway both the 2007-08 drafts netted Matt Schaub, anytime you can score a franchise QB, that draft is saved. post haste, 2009, add three starters, Cushing, Barwin & Quin with every other pick on the 53 man roster, Caldwell, Hill, Casey, McCain & Nolan. pretty solid maybe a C+ or B-.

2010 draft class took an atrocious hit, what with Kareem Jackson being exposed in poorly executed coverage scheme, Ben Tate lost for the year in a meaningless pre-season game, Earl Mitchell & Darryl Sharpton struggling with injury's & positional designations. But once again Rick Smith drafted with depth in mind, all players still with the team despite injurys or better players ahead in positions. Garrett Graham, behind Owen, Joel & Casey. McManis behind Quin, now Harris & Roc. Shelly behind Wade. Trindon with hand mended should explode & be a missing cog on special teams. Dorin takes the sophomore jump as Andre Johnsons understudy. all in all another solid C+ or B-.

Long story short, Texans are adding three starters a year via the draft while adding depth. They just need something more to show for it. I don't want to have to deal next year with a semi high draft slot position & focus more on taking BPA.

Very well put. I think the team has shed some of the lesser players each year & will do so this season. I think we have players at every position to do the job and the difference should be the coaching + the mayurity of some players having a year behind them. I think QB is the thin position as absolutely nothing behind Schaub. Maybe we will get thru the season with him in all 16 games. I think FS will be ok if not spectacular and hopefully the SS position will not be so glaringly poor.
