Default Re: Patrick Peterson

Wade Phillips may see Patrick Peterson as the next Steve Atwater. Atwater was drafted for FS with the Broncos 1st round pick the year Wade Phillips became their Defensive Coordinator. Wade could be thrilled to have a potential Pro Bowl Corner/Safety combo guy and have the luxury of lining him up on the line of scrimmage and moving him around. Interestingly enough, Gary Kubiak was the backup QB on the Broncos while Atwater was there, so they were teammates while Phillips was the DC!

Quote:
Atwater was drafted out of the University of Arkansas by the Broncos with the 20th pick in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft. The Broncos began the draft with the 13th overall pick and were hoping to upgrade their defense which had ranked 27th (out of a possible 28) against the run the previous year. Knowing that Atwater would be available in the later parts of the first round, the Broncos traded down to the 20th overall pick owned by the Cleveland Browns who selected Eric Metcalf with Denver's 13th overall pick. Atwater was projected by most as the second-best safety in the draft behind Louis Oliver who was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 25th overall pick. However, then-head coach Dan Reeves selected Atwater over Oliver because of his leadership skills which Reeves felt were badly needed following the defense's let downs during the 1988 season.

New defensive coordinator Wade Phillips employed Atwater close to the line of scrimmage in order to fortify Denver's run defense and he led the team in tackles, finishing with 129 tackles his rookie season. Denver's defense jumped an 20 spots to finish 7th against the run and tied for 3rd best in yards per carry with a 3.7 yard average. That same year, Atwater finished 2nd to Kansas City's Derrick Thomas in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. The additions of rookies Atwater and Bobby Humphrey, along with key free agent signings, helped Denver rebound from 8-8 in 1988 to AFC Super Bowl representative in 1989.

Atwater's second season marked the first of seven consecutive Pro Bowl selections (19901996), tied for most in franchise history. Over his career, he was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, second most in franchise history. Early in his career, Atwater teamed with fellow Broncos safety Dennis Smith to form one of the best safety tandems of their generation. Both would later be inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame. During his 10-year career in Denver, Atwater started in 155 games, tying him for seventh in franchise history for games started. He also started in 14 post-season games.

Exactly. I just don't think they are going to get him. Wade likes he guys in his 3-4 to get the pressure first. I see them sticking or barely moving up to get their rusher for his scheme.

Peterson has great size. He's a rare, rare physical talent. He's got elite track speed and proven production. He returns kicks for LSU. Instead of some 5'6 160lb guy, they have Peterson doing it because he isn't just a straight line sprinter. He may move to FS, but I have no doubts about him starting at CB in the NFL from day 1.

If you did the Cleveland trade. Then traded back into the 2nd rd using Houston's 3rd and Clevelands 4th and drafted Brooks Reed or Chris Carter. Then signed Ike Taylor in FA the secondary would be fixed and you would have your rush OLB.

Plus your own picks in rds 4/7 to add depth that everybody on this MB is clamouring for.

This is a valid concern.

But CB isn't a position that requires a high IQ. Case in point Deion Sanders. LOL

This is where I am too.

Peterson may very well make a damn good FS. And if you think he will be a better FS than CB then move him there.

But don't move him just because he is "big" for a CB.

Trade our 3rd and Cleveland's 4th to move up mid-late 2nd round and take Sam Acho or Chris Carter (since I think Reed is long gone). Shoot maybe even Akeem Ayers. And I agree, go after the FA CB too to solidify the secondary.

OR! Move the #11, our 3rd and Jacoby Jones for the #6 and their 4th. Maybe they look to continue Jacoby's development and give Colt a weapon. We'd have the 2nd still available for us and puts a late 3rd/early 4th round grade on Jacoby. But he'll make a more immediate impact than most of the WRs in this draft outside Jones/Green. We would have the luxury of packaging both those 4ths together to get a mid/late 3rd rounder if another prospet was falling.

That would essentially have us moving up 5 spots from #11 to #6 by dropping about 15 spots in the 3rd and giving up Jacoby Jones. All this obviously purely hypothetical

They don't but this is how NFL people think and that is why the "safety" talk has been out there. Do you know any 220 CBs in the league? That is what they are saying. I'm just reporting what they are getting from NFL evaluators. I know I trust them more than me or people here.

Multiple scouts and GMs tell CBS Sports' Clark Judge that Patrick Peterson will likely end up at safety "in three to four years."We've noticed in Peterson's games that he struggles in space, particularly when playing "off" receivers. He's far from a true shutdown corner when giving any kind of cushion. At 219 pounds, Peterson will immediately be the heaviest corner in the league. This isn't to say Peterson will be an ineffective player; he could be plenty dominant at free safety after the switch.

If he is going to end up a safety, why not just start him as a safety and let him learn to play in the NFL there and save the transition pains in 3-4 years.

I really hope this talk makes him slip to wear we can snatch him to play FS for us.

It's funny how nobody ever had any complaints about his abilities as a CB until the weigh in at the combine. Then, all of a sudden he is a FS.

Whatever. I trust my eyes and what I've seen. At either CB or FS, Peterson will be a dominant player.
