Default Aldon smith

was wondering what everyone thought about this guy.
say if we were to draft him at 11 what would everyone think??
has great athleticism and looks like a play maker but could he be a bust like so many other 4-3 DE moving to 3-4OLB??

let me know what you guys think

I think he's a pretty good prospect and he'll definitely go within the top 20 and I don't think he'd be too much of a reach at #11. Everyone expects him to play either the 4-3 DE or the 3-4 Rush LB position, so from a position and talent standpoint, he would appear to be perfect.

BUT.

Historically, the Texans prefer to draft 4 year starters except in rare instances (and Kareem Jackson was one of those instances). Aldon has really only played 1 full year in college and 1 partial year and LAST season was the partial season (because of a broken fibula.)

I'd be pretty shocked if we drafted him and if we draft him, it would note a departure from the way this staff normally drafts and I'd have to infer it meant that Wade forced the issue on this guy.

Seems a little lean to me. Would almost have to go to OLB or end up like Aaron Maybin. Has a nice inside move that he gets guys with with his deceptive strength.

I think he is an absolute wildcard. love his intangibles but whoever drafts him is gonna have to already depth to develop him @ the proper pace. A team like the Giants for instance with history of outstanding results from position could develop him into something very special. I'm not sure the Texans would know what to do with him?

I agree with BL. Whoever drafts Aldon Smith will get a guy full of athleticism and potential but will take a year or so of development to see his full potential. Who was the last player with potential that the Texans ever developed into a quality player?

Aside from him going to a crap school, he has almost no experience. I look at him as a flash-in-the-pan type guy. While I think he'll be a little more successful than Everett Brown (God, did I call that one or what?) and about as bad as Maybin. He has no experience playing in space or dropped off the LOS, and he spent most of his time with his hands off the ground, meaning he needs a lot of work at 4-3 DE and a damn near miracle at 3-4 OLB..and a full on miracle at a worthwhile education.

For the record, I love your stuff YTF. You're as knowledgeable as anyone else around this board. And I think you are right on this one as well.

But just for argument's sake, have you ever had a good scouting report on a Missouri player?

IDK why some people project him going to teams that run a 3-4 defense, the guy is 6'5" 260-Lbs and I can't imagine him playing the OLB position for a 3-4 defense. He could play as a DE but would need to gain some weight, or he could play DE for a 4-3 team which I think is ideal for him.

Basically, I think he is a bust unless if a good defensive line coach can develop him...

I hate to be the sunshine pumper, but isn't Wade Phillips known for developing 3-4 OLBs?

Really, because Smith is the one prospect who best fits the profile of Phillips' previous 3-4 OLB studs Merriman and Wade.

It wouldn't surprise me if Phillips actually preferred Aldon Smith and Robert Quinn over Von Miller due to their size. Yes, they are less polished than Miller. But, Phillips has made a career out of developing 3-4 edge rushers. Why wouldn't he want a player with upside and ability such as Smith?

i think lucky we have finally have the same thinking lol couldn't agree with you more!

A lot of broadcasters, journalists and scouts have said good things about smith but its seems that if we picked him up that a few of you guys wouldn't be too happy.

obviously miller is out of the question but i'm starting to get on the aldon wagon and would be happy with either him or Quinn at 11.

"Aside from him going to a crap school" ? OK, so I guess this means you attended a college that's a big Missouri rival ?
But Smith does remind me a bit of Maybin since he's basically just had one year of starting and playing at a high-level and was therefor the same as Maybin who has been a big-time bust. On the other hand the Packers drafted some guy to play at OLB for them named Matthews who also was a one-year wonder ?
But given the experience that the Texans had with their underclassman first round pick last year, if they go OLB with their pick at 11, I wouldn't be surprised to see them take somebody like Kerrigan over Smith, since he's a
4 year guy with a more complete resume, but with less upside ?

But what about Wade Phillips' experience? The Cowboys in 2006 went with a very experienced Bobby Carpenter, who was more of a self-made athlete like Kerrigan. When Wade was with the Chargers in 2005, underclassman Shawn Merriman was taken in the 1st round. Merriman went on to become Defensive Rookie of the Year and received a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Who's making the 1st round pick for the Texans this year? If it's Smithiak, then a guy like Kerrigan could be the pick. I don't see Phillips being that gun shy.

One of the main strengths of the 2012 draft is LB's. Guys that should be in that draft are (Carder,T.Lewis,Burfict,Kuechly,Te'o,Skov etc...) This is why I hope the Texans dont reach for a OLB like Ayers. All of thse guys are better players than Ayers. IMHO

The Texans have been reaching for need instead of looking forward to the following yrs draft strength. For instance where would Jackson rank in this yrs CB rankings ? (6-7) But the Texans are now stuck paying 1st rd $$$$ to a guy that just isn't that good.

This kind of thinking has developed a void of talent and overpaying. In the draft you have to be agressive and forward thinking. This is where Rick and Gary have failed in relation to te draft.

I appreciate the words. I liked Maclin on the field and I think Gabbert will be a good QB.

Personally I'd prefer Smith over Kerrigan for more than just the obvious reason of his superior potential. The thing is the dirtly little secret the Texans seem unwilling to talk about, atleast publically: In only the most optimistic scenarios will they be able to successfully complete the conversion to the 3-4 in 2011. Realistically speaking it's a 2-year process. So it's probably going to take a couple of years anyway to convert (even though Kubiak may not have 2 years), so hopefully Smith would start to come in to his own in 2012 ?
