Default New ESPN/GBN Rumors: Cleve down and Detroit up?

from http://www.gbnreport.com/
Great Blue North Draft Report

Third pick for sale… New Cleveland G.M. Phil Savage left no doubt at the Browns’ pre-draft news conference yesterday that the team would very much like to move down from the 3rd spot in next weekend’s draft. Savage indicated that over the next couple of days he will be actively calling other teams around the league looking for a trading partner. In fact, according to Savage, the Browns will be willing to move fairly ‘deep’ into the opening round if the right offer came along. Savage also indicated that the Browns might also be interested in moving their #2, the 34th overall, to a team looking to move up to grab a first-round quality player who slipped out of the opening round. And while they didn’t quite come out and say it publicly, the Browns are downplaying the likelihood that they would take a QB with the #3 pick overall if they weren’t able to swing a deal to move down. Savage also downplayed the fact that the Browns cancelled a pre-draft visit from Michigan WR Braylon Edwards, likely the top-rated player to be available were the team to stay at #3 citing a ‘scheduling conflict.’ According to Savage, the Browns already know all they need to about Edwards. The Browns, though, will be meeting with Wisconsin DE Erasmus James this week, along with Arkansas QB-turned-WR Matt Jones and Akron QB Charlie Frye. The Browns, who also helped run Frye’s on-campus workout late last month, have shown a lot of interest in Frye who could very well still be on the board when they make their second round selection. Meanwhile, Savage appeared to downplay the likelihood that the Browns would select a QB like Alex Smith of Utah if they stayed at the 3rd pick. Savage hedged, saying that ‘for every Peyton Manning, there’s a Ryan Leaf.’ Savage also noted that new head coach Romeo Crennell was part of an organization which won three of the last four Super Bowls with a 6th round pick at the helm.

QB carousel spinning in Motor City… One of the more curious stories of this pre-draft year was whether Detroit actually had Utah QB Alex Smith in for a visit in the past couple of weeks. There were some rumblings originally that Smith had visited, but the Lions countered saying it was actually the Stanford TE of the same name who was in town. In fact, the Cardinal’s Smith may very well have visited the Lions who have a need for a pass-catching TE, however, they also did have Utah’s Smith in for a visit. That’s curious, of course, because the Lions already appear set at QB with incumbent starter Joey Harrington and newly-signed veteran Jeff Garcia. There had been rumblings as recently as January, though, that the Lions – and especially head coach Steve Mariucci – weren’t pleased with Harrington’s progress through his first three years in the league. The rather immobile Harrington also isn’t necessarily a very good fit for Mariucci’s west coast style offense. What makes more sense for the Lions, who have the 10th pick overall this year, would be to look at selecting a top defensive prospect such as Texas LB Derrick Johnson or Maryland DE Shawne Merriman at that spot and, in fact, Detroit had both in for final pre-draft visits earlier this week.

Coupled with this from ESPNInsider:
Apr. 13 - Browns general manager Phil Savage may have to consider a possible trade down with the Bucs (to No. 5) if Aaron Rodgers falls to them. The Browns are believed to like Alex Smith more than Rodgers. If Smith is there at No. 3, they'd take him. If only Rodgers is there, they might have to take wide receiver Braylon Edwards. However, if Edwards is gone, the Browns aren't taking a running back, and might trade down with the Bucs and take a defensive player
Apr. 11 - Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen recently visited Utah quarterback Alex Smith and Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and it appears the 49ers, Dolphins and Browns have a possible trading partner if they are willing to make a sweetheart deal to move out of their top-three spots. The Bucs consider Smith and Rodgers top-level quarterbacks.
Although no trade talks have begun, the Bucs' late push to visit the QBs creates some options for the top three teams. Going off the trade charts used by most teams, the normal cost of moving from No. 5 to No. 1 would be top-10, first-round pick. To move from No. 5 to No. 2 would be a top-12 pick. To move from No. 5 to No. 3 would be a second-round pick, something the Bucs could easily do.

Most of these rumors came out today - If Cleveland deals down to 5, no big deal.
Cleveland dealing down to 10 would shake things up a little.

id watch Philly on this one. Philly has alot of picks to spare, and im sure they would jump on Braylon. Cleveland said they would be willing to move deep into the first if the offer was right... and philly has the picks to make a good offer.

Default Browns may deal No. 3 pick

Browns play plans close to vest

Phil Savage may be a rookie general manager, but he is displaying the adeptness of a seasoned pro in not divulging his plans for the April 23-24 NFL draft.

In his final predraft appearance in front of the media Tuesday, the new Browns' general manager said nothing definitive and left open all options on what to do with the team's third overall pick in the first round.

"We're open to anything," Savage said. "We're willing to pick. We're willing to stay. We're willing to move down."

Savage fielded questions for 90 minutes like Brooks Robinson fielding grounders at third base.

Although he sidestepped the issue of taking a quarterback at No. 3, Savage gave the impression the Browns would not do so.

"For every Peyton Manning, there was a Ryan Leaf," Savage said of the checkered history of taking a passer high. "For every Donovan McNabb, there was a Tim Couch and Akili Smith. The air is thin up there and sometimes we don't get enough oxygen."

Later, when asked if he felt pressure to acquire the team's next franchise quarterback now, while he has a high pick, Savage pointed to coach Romeo Crennel and referred to his former team's success with Tom Brady.

"I'm sitting next to a coach who won three Super Bowls in four years with a guy from the sixth round," Savage said. "I think it's proven that the quarterbacks come from anywhere. There is no science involved in that one."

Crennel made the case that because of the addition of veteran Trent Dilfer, "if we take a quarterback at No. 3, hopefully, that guy will not have to go in and have the weight of carrying the team on his shoulders."

The most substantive talk concerned Savage's desire to trade down and collect extra draft picks over the first three rounds.

If Detroit finds away to make this trade. Expect the Detroit Lions (UT North) to get DJ.

I heard a rumor that Tampa was interested in trading up with either Cleveland or Miami so they could get either Rodgers or Smith...I wonder what they would do with Griese and Simms, though...

They'd certainly be able to pick up Smith or Rodgers and still keep Simms and Griese this year. I don't imagine Simms costs much to keep around, and I'm guessing that Griese is somewhere around the veteran minimum for his position. IF the Bucs did trade up in hopes of nabbing one of the top two QBs my guess would be Gruden would prefer Smith since he's a mobile and atheletic QB. Remember when he wanted Rob Johnson to be the starter for the Bucs, but eventually had to admit that the Rob experiment was a failure. Then Brad Johnson won the starting spot, and the Bucs won the SB. I agree that QB isn't a big need for the Bucs, but they are always full of surprises when it comes to the draft.

Detroit will probably get DJ just by waiting at #10. They certainly don't need to move to 3 for it. Either Merriman or DJ will be available at #10, you can bank on it and neither will go before #7 (barring teams trading picks above that)

I like the idea of getting the Browns second rounder. Could we get it for our two threes and maybe our 4. or would you prefere our 2 and cowboys three. I think Philly might get the deal for Cleve's first rounder done.

Not sure which burn is worse, this one or when Boomer called Payton the next Marino... while Dan was sitting one person away.

I think Detroit may move up for ASmith - maybe they have realized that Harrington is not the guy and Garcia would only play until ASmith was ready.

As far as getting Cleve's 2nd:
According to the point chart -
our 2nd, Dallas third, our 5th would match up to Cleve's 2nd and 4th.
or
both 3rds, the 4th and the 5th would match up to Cleve's 2nd (#34)

But - since Cleve wants to move - maybe they make a sweeter deal - if that means we can get their 2nd for both 3rds and a 5th, then we do it.
(#13=BPA (which looks like RB), #34 Bass (or Blackstock), #47 WR Brown, 4th the big NT projected to go in the late 4th

Moving up would give us 3 impact players

This is great news. My dream scenerio would be to take Merriman in the first. Then trade up in the second with Cleveland - our #47 + Peek for their #34. With #34, I'd take Baas as an OC. We'd use one 3rd round pick to move up in the 1st to get Merriman, but we would still have one left. I'd use it to take OG Logan Mankins.

I am not so sure the Bucs ould be looking for a QB. I think they may be looking for a dominating runner.

I hope none of ya'll are correct becuase Gruden already signed Griese to like a 5 yr deal and the only reason they won games last year was because of Griese Clayton and the Defense. Also the Bucs have Pittman who did pretty good except for some fumbles and I think he deserves just one more chance. If the Bucs got BMW they would look somethin like this

QB B Grease

HB Pittman

FB Alstott

WR Clayton BMW Galloway

TE Anthony Becht

This doesn't really make much sense to me, but I heard a rumor that Detroit wants to trade up for Mike Williams of all people ...If they can't get him, they may look to trade down for Mark Clayton...I guess they don't think Charles Rogers will play much this season...This stems from a John Clayton report, BTW...

I heard some of that, too. However, this just cries smokescreen at me. A lot of their fans were upset about Roy Williams last year, pacified only by the fact that it was Roy+early2ndrounder. Unless they have a doc report saying Rogers isn't going to go, this has got to be BS.
