I think the moving Quin to safety talk, is just that. Talk.

It's an option, & so is moving Allen to safety, drafting a safety, signing a free agent safety, or even trading for a veteran safety.

I'm just happy that they are talking about the safety position, and there is no doubt it will be addressed.

I'm not saying we should even try. My post was simply to indicate showing interest in Cam Newton hurts us as far as trade scenarios go.

We want Newton to have a good showing, increase his draft spot, & we want every team drafting behind us to understand we are willing to trade down.

As you said, Schaub's back to back "elite-like" performance helps us with the latter.

Does Cam Newton play NT?

How does he fit our team's needs? DanO is still signed for another year, & though he'll never compare to the athlete Newton is, he's enough to pass on taking a back-up developmental QB with our first round pick.

I do, however believe having the draft before free agency will help us become more aggressive in free agency since they won't have the draft to fall back on.

Fingers crossed.

Newton sucked eggs big time at the Combine. Only way he helps us by projecting in the upper 1st Round is if he burns it up at his Pro Day.

I might change my position on this after Newton's combine performance. But, if he's the best on the board at 11, there may be more value in taking him than trading down. Kubiak has shown that he can get good trade value for his back up QB, which I also think he'll do with Leinart after next season. Also, Kubiak is a fan of having back ups motivate starters. Schaub is 28, and it normally takes an average of 4 years to develop starting QB's in this league.

Lienart won't be a Texan next year. He signed a one year deal, and will be a free agent March 3rd. We won't be getting anything for him.

That was a deal I never really understood.

That deal was a backup plan if Schaub went down.

It really says Gary has very little confidence in Orlovsky. Rightfully so

I think we'll see a back up QB out of this draft, at least in later rounds.

Connor Barwin should be our back-up, considering he's coming off injury. If he's healthy enough to beat Mark Anderson out at that spot, then we've got something.

I wouldn't look to draft OLB until 4th round or later. Unless of course a bad-ass is there at 11.

I think this is two fold. One, you don't want anyone to know you're looking for a NT in the first, if you're looking for a NT in the first. Saying that we can work with Mitchell or Cody (Shuan) could be no more than a smoke screen.

Second, penciling Mitchell/Cody in at this spot could be just to evaluate overall team needs. "If Mitchell/Cody is our NT, would investing in our secondary be more productive?" For all we know, they still see a zero at NT and feel it's our weekest position.

Amobi is definitely not a NT. He'll more than likely rotate at DE (which I think he's better at in a 3-4) even though he is "too short" (IMO).

If we successfully convince other teams we are interested in Cam Newton, that makes the #10 spot more valuable. If we want him, why would we trade out of that position........ basically giving him away.

If Newton turns into a hot commodity, we need someone to believe Minnesota wants him. Then they'll approach us for a trade.

Think about the 2006 draft. Denver didn't trade with the team they thought wanted Jay Cutler. They traded with the team ahead of the team they thought wanted Jay Cutler.
So a defense that relies heavily on its OLB's and has NONE that have ever played that position should wait until the 4th round or later to draft one? Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. We better have 2 OLB's picked by the 4th round if we expect this defense to have any chance to improve over last years pathetic performance.

Well, if he gets a decent contract elsewhere, we might be able to get a compensatory pick out of him next year.

How many games did Clay Matthews play in a 3-4 defense before he was drafted?

How many games did James Harrison or Lamar Woodley, or Brian Orakpo, or Demarcus Ware play in a 3-4 or even LB before being drafted to the NFL?

Most guys projected as 3-4 rush OLB have never played the position. Compared to those guys, Mark Anderson & Connor Barwin are just as good ( if not better) prospects at OLB. Diles is a SAM, Bently & Adibi can play the position as well.

We could use more LBs, but we don't need an instant starter.

Rod Woodson did not move to safety until his 11th year in the league (and with a different team: the Niners, not Pittsburgh.)

Barwin played stand-up for the Texans quite a bit so I think he would be fine.
The only question is the injury. He was out pretty much the whole year; and for a young player, I think it's hard.

If you get a "strong" CB, then the Jackson will be unmercifully tested. Seems like the type of miscalculated experiment that has screwed us repeatedly in the past. IMHO, it again has "failure" written all over it.
Given that everyone regressed last year in the secondary, GQ included, I have to think poor coaching played a major role. I think KJ has enough athletic ability to play in the NFL, especially if his technique improves through proper coaching (fingers crossed that Vance will be a good one). If Im not mistaken KJ ran a 4.45 and the 2 top CBs, Revis and Nnamdi both run 4.39, 6 hundredths of a second is a minute difference. In track and field .06 is the difference between winning and losing, in the NFL as long as you are within arms reach you can still make a tackle or swat a ball away. Hell, send KJ to Vermont, I'll have him in the 4.3s by training camp (I've been a strength and conditioning coach for 16 years). Despite what many think, speed is absolutely coachable.

IMHO, we have to upgrade the FS spot as well, so we need at least 2 DBs. Personally, I think we need 3 as the SS needs to be upgraded as well. It doesn't matter to me if we grab 2 CBs and move GQ to FS or grab a FS and CB and leave GQ where he is for now. I would like to see KJ play the nickel for next season just to give him another season to learn the NFL ropes. Hopefully this CBA garbage doesn't hamper FA too much for us!

Hey, I wanted to ask you, with regards to Ryans, did he have an avulsion fracture in his AT or did the tendon itself rupture, have you seen anything about that?

The Texans have never released the specifics of Ryan's injury. However, most all of the Achilles ruptures I've seen have been at the mid tendon. An avulsion of a fractured piece of calcaneous bone with the tendon attached but per se left proximally intact would be an exceptional occurrence.

Actually, Woodson played CB for the Niners.
He signed a 3-yr contract but was released after just one year (to save money); so it seems they didn't think he was all that great a CB late in his career.

He latched on with the Ravens and played CB for another year before making the move to safety (in his 13th year when they drafted McAlister in the first round at #10 to play CB.)
I would say the move was due to Woodson no longer able to play CB at the highest level.
(They could have traded down and drafted a safety - Edwards at #25)

Also, moving a veteran to safety is much easier than a 2-yr CB to a new position. The vet already knows all the offenses and defenses in the league well; on top of that, Woodson had become a film-room guy for a long while.

I do not feel moving your "best" CB to safety is the ideal thing to do.
Why not leave him there and get a veteran safety (rather than getting a veteran CB and move Quin to safety).
That seems to be a very strange way of doing things, to me at least.

Im aware of Woodson history at CB and FS, my point was, it's happened before and some guys have had great success, that's it.

Also, in my post, I said moving GQ was an option IF we signed another CB or two in FA. If we signed Joseph or another top shelf CB than GQ wouldn't be our best CB anymore. I agree that GQ is a good CB, but maybe he'd be an excellent FS, it's certainly possible. I also be happy if we signed a good CB and a good FS and left GQ at CB, I guess it depends on who we draft/sign. For the record, Im not saying we should move GQ, just that FS is a huge need and he COULD be an option.

On that note, since you watch a lot of college FB, what are your thoughts of Prince? A lot of current mocks have him falling to us. I only watched one Neb game all year, so I don't have a feel for his game. I've heard that he puts hands all over WRs, which is a scary thing given the rules on PI in the league. I also wonder how Prince would do at FS, he certainly has the size and athletic ability.
