How did you classify a team as a 'cover 2' team? Houston ran alot of cover 2, which I think is a big reason our pass coverage sucks. Our safeties are a terrible match for cover 2.

Technically, the Tampa-2 is a Cover-3. The middle linebacker is responsible for the deep middle and the safeties have the deep sides. So that's Cover-3.

But, yeah, most teams run a tampa-2 coverage from time to time. The Texans ran it quite a bit and you can even run it out of a 3-4 with one of the ILBs taking that deep middle. Our safeties and MLBs just didn't have the range to really run it well and you've got to be able to get good pressure with 4 linemen to really run the tampa-2 the way it was originally designed... and we didn't get that, either.

Even the teams that are traditionally tampa-2 because of their coaches are running more and more other looks now. Indy is much less of a tampa-2 team than it used to be.

Found this in another thread. Figured we can use it in a 3-4/4-3 discussion.

From this & what we've heard about Wade's 3-4, we can see there won't be much difference between what Mario is going to be expected to do. Playing RDE in this formation, the NT is shaded to the strong side (which is the right side of the offense). SAM is on Mario's sholder.

The biggest difference, is that the LDE won't have a DT on his left shoulder. Instead, there would be no one there. In most cases, the weakside LB will be on the LDE's right shoulder, not the FS who will be able to play further off the line.

With such a formation, the one on one situation with the DL will be created by rushing LBs, the two ILBs can attack the guards on the inside, or the WiLL can attack the outside (LT) leaving the LDE one on one with a guard.

You would think this would allow the DEs to get more sacks, working in one-on-one situations. But historically, DEs in 3-4s don't get the numbers DEs in 4-3s do.
