Default Antonio Cromartie probably no longer a Jet

In a continued effort to tease(well frustrate) Texans fans, here is a potential free CB who looks to be on the market.

Yeah, crossing your fingers and hope you don't knock someone up isn't really a proven method.

I'd sign him, he won't demand a big contract and he's an extremely capable corner. The loudmouth thing barely counts as a detriment to his stock because...well he played for THE loudmouth. Rex Ryan's team talked some shit? No, really? Couldn't have guessed that.

Cromartie, oh after N Asomugha is signed, right before they sign Bailey and Rogers. And then they draft J Houston.

He won't have demand a big contract. The market ...the lack of available starting CBs...will dictate that he gets one.

So he has illegitimate kids. He pays his child support. Hasn't gotten in trouble with the law. Cromartie would be the best CB on this team by far and I think he's overrated. So what,he has a mouth on him. Most good CB's have a mouth on them.

The CB's are always going to stink if the Texans only draft CB's without a mouth. I dont understand why people hold Cromarties illigetimates against him. But dont hold other NFL players illigetimate children against them.

I'm really not a big fan of Antonio Cromartie, I think he's overrated. With that said... I do think think he'd be the best CB on this team. LOL. I'm not one with the X's and O's knowledge so not sure of his "fit", his strengths/weaknesses and what we're trying to do. But if he's the only decent guy we can get, then by all means, Wade should find a way to make it work!

Might be true in most years but this year there is a potential for a lot of decent CBs to be free agents:

http://www.footballsfuture.com/2011/fa/db.html

The sad thing is most players from other teams would be the best player on our roster at our need positions...truth or fiction?

This is just the Jets move to try to create some space for Asomugha and build a defensive powerhouse.

I'm not a big fan. Dude doesn't tackle and takes too many chances. I think he was in the perfect situation playing for the blitzing Jets across from Revis. He has nowhere to go but down IMO.

'eh, I'm surprised that you'd use this as a guide for judging talent. I'm not comparing careers or skills, but Deion Sanders played for five different NFL teams. If multiple teams is a guide of talent, then he must have really sucked.

Dude is a mercenary, and to be honest, that mentality plays into the Houston Texans favor. Cromartie can be bought, where someone like Asomugha will get paid but will most likely look for a contender. The Texans have a much better chance to sign Cormartie than they would ever have signing Asomugha.

The Texans are desperate, no doubt about it. And if history is an indication, they do not know how to draft the talent that they need at CB. Free agency provides a solid option to find proven talent.

If his past is an obstacle, then this owner has clearly learned very little in 9 years of mediocre results. Sometimes you just have to drop the choir-boy requirement in order to improve the team.

I know you know the difference but to be explicit teams are getting rid of Cromartie. Teams were clamoring for Sanders and he was going to the highest bidder.

While certainly big picture analysis is a good idea, what are the reason(s) the Chargers and Jets are 'getting rid' of him?

What I found on the Chargers deal was that they were trying to get value for him before his deal was up.

"General Manager A.J. Smith is having the same thoughts about Cromartie that Bill Belichick had about Richard Seymour: Get something for him now rather than nothing when he leaves as a free agent." - Source

I'd like to read any other angles on the Chargers deal if you have them.

As far as the Jets, this story has been disputed, so it's not even certain that the Jets are going to let him go. And according to the story in the OP of this thread, the Jets might be aiming for Asomugha, so it would not make a lot of sense to throw big money at Cromartie to play nickel back.

My take is simply that we are desperate and he is heads-and-shoulders better than anyone on our roster. We only need him for a couple of seasons until Wade can develop some talent in our secondary. I think it's worth a shot, because we are looking for immediate results at this point in time.

Cromartie didn't start as a rookie. As a sophomore he had a tremendous season and folks thought he was the next Champ Bailey. As is so often the case that didn't pan out. There was a lot of grousing in San Diego about his play as well as his off the field issues. I don't see it as analogous to Seymour because (a) the Patriots got a 1st because league wide Seymour was very highly regarded and (b) Seymour was turning 30 whereas Cromartie was still on his rookie contract.

Don't get me wrong. I want them to take a shot as well. He has tremendous athletic ability (which is his fault at times as he relies too heavily on it). They need to make their best efforts to sign someone if there is even a free agency.
