Default NFL is a non-profit organization?

A buddy of mine was watching DeMaurice Smith talk about the NFL and he mentions that the NFL is a 501(c)-6 organization, meaning they are tax exempt.

Here's the video. He talk about it at the 5 minute mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3n-x...feature=relmfu

I don't have any other information about it but the fact that NFL owners are whining about losing money when they pay less taxes than you, me, or anyone who isn't a billionaire football owner is ridiculous.

Default Re: NFL is a non-profit organization?

Well that's news to me. I can't believe they get a free pass for that. Makes no sense at all to me. How does the NFL get this, but MLB our 'national pasttime' doesn't get jack?? Odd, I'm gonna have to read up on this one. From the IRS website:

Quote:
Business Leagues

Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code provides for the exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade, and professional football leagues, which are not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.

A business league is an association of persons having some common business interest, the purpose of which is to promote such common interest and not to engage in a regular business of a kind ordinarily carried on for profit. Trade associations and professional associations are business leagues. To be exempt, a business league's activities must be devoted to improving business conditions of one or more lines of business as distinguished from performing particular services for individual persons. No part of a business league's net earnings may inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual and it may not be organized for profit to engage in an activity ordinarily carried on for profit (even if the business is operated on a cooperative basis or produces only enough income to be self-sustaining). The term line of business generally refers either to an entire industry or to all components of an industry within a geographic area. It does not include a group composed of businesses that market a particular brand within an industry.

Chambers of commerce and boards of trade are organizations of the same general type as business leagues. They direct their efforts at promoting the common economic interests of all commercial enterprises in a trade or community, however.

The league itself is non-profit, the teams are not. The NFL and the individual franchises are separate entities from the IRS's standpoint.

Quote:
In a conference call with reporters conducted after the union event, NFL general counsel Jeff Pash explained that the non-profit concept is a “non-issue.” Pash explained that the league office merely passes profits through to the teams, and that the teams then pay taxes on the profits.

Just more of the 'rich get richer' routine that permeates this country like a virus. They con us into building their stadiums that they control and profit from, and then they exempt themselves from paying taxes. What a crock.

The fans need to unite and lock out the NFL to show them who is really boss, Egyptian street revolution style. It's never going to happen, but a man can dream, can't I?...

Why are we still fans of this sport? I wish I was a hockey or soccer fan. Hell even baseball. At least you can see a few games and not have a bleeding anus the next day.

So I wonder how that money shows up on the teams revenue reports?...I keep hearing ownership whine about margins, but they will not open the books.
