Several hurt after snow and ice slide off Super Bowl Stadium

Quote:
ARLINGTON — Emergency officials say ice and snow falling from the roof of Cowboys Stadium has left at least six people injured.
The Arlington Fire department says six people were taken to hospitals Friday afternoon. The two most seriously injured were described as stable. The department says none of the injuries appears to be life-threatening.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says in an e-mail that as many as seven people had been injured and all were in good condition. A concessions tent also was damaged.
Aiello says the snow is being cleared away in preparation for Sunday’s Super Bowl.
There were conflicting reports about the number of injured. Lieutenant Pedro Arevalo of the Arlington Fire Department told Bloomberg News that six people were injured, two critically.
The injured were National Football League workers preparing for the Sunday's Super Bowl, Arevalo said.
“When the ice falls at such a high altitude, it catches wind and it can go roughly 60 to 70 feet away from the stadium,” Arevalo said. “It was on the northeast side of the stadium, where it slopes down.”

From what I'm being told, access roads to Dallas are not safe in any sense of the word........and not expected to be so anytime soon. The extra plows will remove snow from some of the thoroughfares. But plows don't touch the ice coating. In fact, removing the snow encourages ice formation. Sand and salt address the ice problem. But Dallas has a limited amount of trucks that they have been able to gather up, most of those carrying sand which alone affords very limited long-term traction. Dallas has already virtually run out of salt which is absolutely essential for the sand to be effective. The salt must first begin melting the ice. Otherwise, the sand would need to be homogeneously spread at least 1" thick. Most "sanding" operations look like the sand was spread with grass spreaders.

In the end, Jerry's palace will have cost the NFL, Jerry and Dallas some unforeseen big-time bucks. This has all the ear marks of a financial catastrophe.

Not to mention the City of Dallas and Fort Worth let the NFL have their convention centers rent free during Super Bowl week (and Jerry Jones "gave up" his stadium as well). All at the expense of Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington taxpayers. DFW was REALLY unprepared for the weather. It's like the leaders here didn't want to deal with it once it got here and wanted to stay inside like everyone else. For example, DART rail decided to stop running the light rail trains overnight, because Pete Delkus (weather guy at the ABC affiliate in Dallas) said it wouldn't start icing until 5. Instead, it started icing at like two. The result? People were stranded at light rail stations for HOURS the next day, because DART had no update. Poor visitors. The roads around Cowboys Stadium are okay, and the same for DT Dallas and Fort Worth. Everywhere else is still crap though. People are staying all over DFW since they have the events spread out. A lot of area to cover.

Interesting article here (talks about more snow/rain coming in on Sunday for the SB): http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/sup...uper-bowl.ece#

And this one talks about how devastating the economic impacts are turning out to be: http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/sup...fort-worth.ece

And people in DFW are already talking about hosting Super Bowl L in 2016. Bob McNair and the Houston Visitors Bureau (or whoever does this stuff) need to get a bid going for 2016.

There's a 40% chance of sleet and snow on Sunday.

What's funny is that I'm being told that even though TxDOT is trying to address clearing some of the main highways, they're forgetting that you have to be able to ACCESS these areas once they may be cleared. The entrance/exit ramps have thus far have been relatively ignored.

On top of that, TxDOT has chosen to use sand only or a light salt/sand mixture (20% salt) instead of pure granular salt as is used in almost every other state. Their explanation is that although MD-20 (the 20% salt mix) is expensive, costing the state more than salt would, it is cheaper than repairing the corrosion to roadways that salt would cause. This should make Jerry, the NFL and Dallas taxpayers very happy.

This reminds me of the insight of the people in charge of SuperBowl cleanup...........

Two SBs have been held at the latitude of the current game in North Texas in the last 11 years -the one happening this week in NTex and the one in ATL 11 years ago and both have had extreme weather problems caused primarily by Ice.

This is a Goodell quote about the handling of the snow situation. Is it that football higher ups just don't know when to STFU?

Quote:
The most important lesson is that you have to be prepared for everything. North Texas was prepared if this happened and in New York, not only are they prepared, they're probably planning on this type of weather.

North Texas had prepared if there was the couple of inches of snow on Monday that had totally melted by Tuesday noon (normal winter weather). Wasn't quit ready for much past that much less the record setting junk we had this week.

Why do I have a feeilng that Goddell talks about these storms and the SB in New York. The same way he talks about the CBA negs.

Spouting the company line and hoping the paying public will buy it. Goddell is a teflon man. IMHO

DeMaurice Smith is the lawyer type guy who has a chip on his shoulder kinda like his buddy. (POTUS) I dont see a season next yr. Unless alot of players start complaining like A.Cromartie. The problem with a lawyer heading the NFLPA is Smith could care less about what's good for the game. It's all about Smith looking good.

A true leader like Upshaw was able to get a great deal. Becauuse he was a good negociator who had the good of the game at heart. But still commanded a good deal get done. It was called reaspect.

The owners dont respect Smith and Smith doesn't respect what's good for the game. I dont see anything good happening with the CBA anytime soon.

There will be alot of damage done to the league and nobody seems to care because of the personalities in the room. If you look at Godells' reign as commissioner. He only cares about $$$$ and authority.

He could careless about injuries to the players. Except that players getting injured is bad for business. Godell is taking the league in a bad direction. IMHO He should've followed the blueprint that Tagliabue/Upshaw set up with a few tweaks here and there.

I think this snow storm will put serious reservations about Superbowls outside of Southern Florida, Southern California, and Arizona.

I heard Miami won't get another game until they cover the stadium, since it rained during the game the last two SBs there.

That's what I'm saying. They need to start getting a Houston bid together for Super Bowl L.
If they want another SB. They're going to have to knock down the Dome and build a tourist attraction there. This city is lacking a tourist drawing card.

The City/County missed a great opportunity to turn the great old gal (Dome) into something amazing like Disney World to bring tourists into the city. While it was still a feasable sturucture. I'm sure TB could've made something out of her.

I wonder who put the kibosh on ideas for the Dome?

He was also seen trying to snort the yardage makers until he figured out it was painted on.
