Texans Mock Draft Post Senior Bowl

The defensive prospects seem muddled in the sense there are several prospects, not named Von Miller who have yet to distance themselves from their competition to be the top defensive player on Texans board.

However on offense there is a WR to compliment Andre Johnson, spread the workload & double teams off his back/legs to stay healthier & more productive helping the offense continue forward into elite company, that’s Julio Jones.

I realize he is another Alabama finished product of Sabin but if used properly combining him to Andre bumps up the Texans WR group with any team in the NFL & maybe missing link from being more consistent entire 60 minute game? He could very well be the bpa on the board, instead of Texans reaching for priority need why not improve team with the best player available? He is listed @ 6040 211 lbs. I think he could shine in drills at the combine & solidify his value as a top 10 pick. He abused Patrick Peterson this season when Alabama met up with LSU.

Too much emphasis, I know in respect to first pick, so moving on to rest of my optimistic Texans Mock Draft (entertainment purposes only). Sticking with Phil just too big of need & he is an excellent prospect for Wade to develop. He has the core strength with rare combination of agility to be a legit run plugger in middle of a 3-4. A little work & polish needed of course, if teams & players can reach agreement early maybe Texans can address this need via free agency too? Cliff Matthews has the last name but not related to Bruce & Clay bloodlines still watching tape along with Barwin & Cushing gives the Texans some pop @ OLB. I see Sharpton moving inside with DeMeco along with another Free Agent acquisition to fill ILB position. Jalil Brown could be gone by early 4th. His footwork & back pedal looks very smooth to me, in other words I think he can cover in the NFL. Texans will be unable to match offers for Butler & must aquire a swing tackle to back up Winston or Brown. He has the core strength to play RT & wingspan/footwork to fill LT if needed. Love LeFeged, Rutgers prospects are tough well coached kids who are transition to the NFL well. Justin Trattou opened some eyes at the East West Shrine Game. Could be excellent rotational, special teams player, far more talented but same spirit as Bulman.

Are you concerned at all about Jones' inconsistent hands?

Taylor, I think is a great pick. Do you think he'll meet the squeaky clean factor?

I think they need to keep Butler. He's a player and would take a few years for a rookie to get to where he is now. How much do you guys think it take to keep him in Houston? I'm thinking FS here, if we can't get one earlier.

Joe Lefeged, caught my eye. Always around the ball. A hustler. Do you think he'll still be there in the 6th? Would like to see this guy a Texan.

1. I like the idea of a very good WR opposite AJ. It would be like the Cardinals with Fitz and Boldin. Excellent choice.

2. I like Taylor, but I don't think he will be here come draft time. I think he shoots up the draft board based on his very good play at the Senior game and his ability to play dominant at that weight. Very good pick, but I don't think he will be here.

3. Cliff Matthews the non Matthews Matthews is still a good player. And he would be a great insurance policy for Meco. Excellent.

4. A little concerned here. He has great size, but he never really stood out for me. I saw a few CU games and he did not wow me. He played in the pass happy Big XII and did not really stand out when I saw him. He seemed adequate. I figure if we want adequate we can get adequate in the 6th or 7th. I'd rather shoot at potential here.

5. YES! Now that's what I am talking about shooting for potential great pick here. This may be your best value pick of the whole draft!

Julio is a complete WR, who is polished & ready to star opposite Andre Johnson. Since first discussed I'll admit myself as feeling lukewarm with this idea of taking a WR with the first pick, but Andre cannot continue to excel or stay healthy with the bulk-load of targets & emphasis opposing defenses game plan against him. For the Texans offense to be more consistent they need Andre 100% along with a compliment to his talents to draw defenders elsewhere, especially in the red zone which Jones is a supreme red-zone target. I'm not worried about his hands either, I don't see Greg McElroy exactly blowing scouts away with his arm strength or accuracy. One of the more important measureables for a WR is hand size, which we'll know for sure @ the combine but I expect Julio have a good sized pair of mitts as opposed to Jacoby Jones (8 1/8") who may move on in Free Agency (assuming their will be FA) creating open roster spot to fill immediately.

In regards to Taylor the one thing I love about his game is his nasty attitude, this is something the Texans really need. I want him on my side.

I'll admit I'm open to taking a CB just not in the first or even the second. Target range is starting in the 3rd with prime prospects left on board to even 5th. So I kinda shot in middle of range, but there are quite a few here to take a look at, nothing set in stone, I just think Jalil exhibits excellent foot speed, competes for the ball with good instincts & technique.

Tell me if I'm wrong but I thought Butler played better than Brown those four games he was suspended? He is going to be offered a very nice contract by too many other NFL teams, in fact he could just hitch his horse up the road to Dallas for the Cowboys, I'm sure Jerry Jones won't worry about paying a few extra million dollars to finally have a legit LT.

I may have to move Joe Lefeged to the fourth instead of taking Jalil Brown that's how much I want him to be a Texan. While Jalil is the higher rated prospect Joe is a football player you have to find a place for on your team.

Justin Trattou is a test. A test to see if Wade Phillips was paying attention while coaching the East West Shrine game? Typical Florida guy, very athletic gifted with high motor always around the ball who converts to OLB from his DE position. Just someone to develop who has the tools to make it at a position of need for the Texans.

that's very good report on Brown. he looked above average among peers @ the Senior Bowl not a fan of CU football so can't really comment other than take your word for it. As I said a little while ago still searching for a CB, kinda like moving Joe Lefeged, Safety, Rutgers to 4th & using your advise to get a CB later. Another thing about these prospects, is the bigger CB's become rarer as the draft unwinds, everybody is searching for size to match-up against big WR's so its hard to find a 6ft. 200 lb. CB much later with speed & smooth transitions in & out of breaks.

i wouldn't mind julio depending on how the board looked. looking at that pick just makes me think what could of happened last year had we taken dez instead of kareem. dez was a top 10 prospect that fell cause of the **** that happened pre-draft. dez>julio as a draft prospect.

but i don't think kubiak and smith have the balls to pull the trigger on it. it would be a PR nightmare like the mario pick in 06, except they can't afford that this time.

thanks for understanding Jones pick. people don't think the offense needs improved because the defense was so bad, but fact is if the Texans don't stay ahead of the pack when opportunity knocks & pass on bpa for more pressing needs once perceived strength is just that perceived. It's a tight wire balancing act that go hand in hand. I also trust Kubiak to assess offensive talent, Julio Jones game fits well with what the Texans do, he is an excellent downfield blocker too & not a diva like so many high profile receivers. so from a character, skill level & talent perspective he would be a great fit for Texans.

To early to tell about Taylor, there are conflicting opinions. However the Texans need to target a NG/NT early or in free agency. If they feel need to trade up a few spots to get Taylor then so be it, you won't hear me complaining.

Immediate help in secondary should be via free agency. The Texans should have just franchised Dunta Robinson one more year while schooling Kareem. In this mock I targeted CB in 4th & safety in 6th. I'm not in favor again of subjecting a rookie CB into a starting role, right now until we know more about the coaching changes.

If Jones is there and the usual suspects are gone , then grab him and when AJ is in decline , he'll be hitting his stride .

Maybe I listen to the talking heads too much. I did see Jones drop a few ball that I thought were catchable, but then who doesn't? I agree that we need a legitamate playmaker on the other side, just not at #1. Not this year. I guess in the back of my mind I'm seeing #19 step up and show that he was indeed a steal last year and we have that threat on the other side.

I'd love to see Taylor in a Texan uni.

We need a CB and Brown's rated 18th of 230+. Tentatavely projected in the 4th-5th.

I don't think your wrong at all! I want to find a way to keep him! Perhaps should have explained my train of thought a little more. Letting Jacoby walk as well as some of the other dead weight roster spots i.e. Molden, McCain, Wilson, Adibi (who I know will have to be replaced) but wouldn't that free up some cash to keep Rashad Butler. Again, just a line of thought.

Maybe listening to the talking heads again but I'd seen enough by the time Mayock gave his list of players "that you have to find a place for". Joe Lefeged was at the top of his list. He's a gamer.

steelbtexan gets it! the crux of Texans draft problems is they draft NEED over BPA, so much so after time they stop progressing & actually fall back to the pack. The idea is to be a complete team full of talented players, but when you bypass talent to address need over & over you become mediocre, average.

There is nothing average about having two elite WR's to spread out a defense. Again the offense needs to be more consistent & the workload taken off select few playmakers Texans already have. I realize several posters may disagree "with some of my reasoning" & that's cool, I can accept good/negative criticizes of my expressions while trying to be creative & insightful.

Actually its not an original idea, I heard Jammie Dukes on reporter row talking with a local Houston radio host, what he thought the real problem with the Texans was & he said that Texans needed to fix their offense so they could control games more with time of possession on a more consistent basis thereby not exposing defense as much in multiple adverse situations. Also that they KNOW their defense has problems & will get those issues resolved.

My question to Texans fans are you happy with bypassing talent on a consistent basis to try to improve a defense that stinks, or can they fix it by adding talent throughout the process with value added picks, better coaching & changing schemes?

Anyway Julio Jones is rated #5 on their big board, I also found this little tidbit & it compares Julio with Andre Johnson of all people this is what they say-

Julio Jones could be the best prospect of the 2011 Young Guns class. Andre Johnson, meanwhile, is hands down the best wide receiver in the National Football League. I like how Jones shows up for big games: 12 receptions for 221 yds against Tennessee and 10 receptions for 199 yds and 1 TD against Auburn.

You have to tip your hat to Andre Johnson for performing at a high level in 2010 despite playing on a bad ankle. This is the same player who closed his collegiate career with a 6 reception 181 yard performance against Syracuse followed by a 6 catch, 193 yard outing against Virginia Tech.

On the flip side, I raise my eyebrows on Julio Jones for coming out of the 2010 Iron Bowl for three series and then re-entering the game for the last drive. Jones can take a lot from Andre Johnson’s mental toughness.

There is nothing average about having two elite WR's to spread out a defense. Again the offense needs to be more consistent & the workload taken off select few playmakers Texans already have. I realize several posters may disagree "with some of my reasoning" & that's cool, I can accept good/negative criticizes of my expressions while trying to be creative & insightful.

Actually its not an original idea, I heard Jammie Dukes on reporter row talking with a local Houston radio host, what he thought the real problem with the Texans was & he said that Texans needed to fix their offense so they could control games more with time of possession on a more consistent basis thereby not exposing defense as much in multiple adverse situations. Also that they KNOW their defense has problems & will get those issues resolved.

I think we talked about OLB being no taller than 6'4 . Quinn and Smith are both 6'5 and lanky . That being said as OLB go it's Miller , Houston , Kerrigan , Acho , and Reed off the top of my head .

Going with BPA here makes sense and makes a nice competition for one year at WR .

Taylor in the second along with getting a vet like Shaun Rogers would be great . What about Mitchell , Cody , and Okoye ... what about them ?
