Default Miserable weather in North TX this weeks dooms chances for "Cold Weather' SB site

Plus, and this is where I really agree with Covitz on why we'll probably never see a cold weather Super Bowl, there is simply too much other business around the game that could be disrupted by poor weather. Joel told me last night that Dallas is extremely difficult to get around in right now because of the weather. Flights were cancelled. Events were cancelled. All because of the weather. You think that affects a lot of companies' bottom line at the Super Bowl? Definitely.

We've seen this movie before. It was 11 years ago when the SB was held in Atlanta, the game between the Titans and the STL Rams, when they had a terrible ice storm which damn near ruined that game.
Jerry Jones may say this is unusually cold weather for NorthTex, and he's right to some degree, but it just shows the downside for having a SB game in a location when this kind of down-side for the game from adverse weather is even a possibility.

The next two superbowls are in Indy and New York (open air) where the weather we are having is much more "predictable." Might ever see cities even as far north as Arlington and Atlanta be in the regular rotation, but the NFL will go north.

Living in NT as you do Arlington, you know about ice-storms and that's
the worse kinda of weather to deal with from a transportation standpoint, agree ? Atleast that's been my experience, which is it's worse than cold and snow, short of full-blown blizzard conditions of course. But NorthTx and ATL are prime ice zones in longitudenal terms.
I know Indy and Jersy are in the works for future sites, but that's because of new stadiums like in Arlington. I'm saying the case for a permanent "Cold weather" site has been badly damaged because of this weeks weather in NorthTx ?

The cold weather locations are all equiped to handle any bad weather. The southern states dont have the resources in place to handle snow and ice so they have more problems.

6 inches of snow shuts down many states: cancelling flights, school, roads,. ect. Here in Upstate NY (for example) 6 inches is nothing. All roads are plowed and open. Flights would only be slightly delayed. 6 inches of snow or ice is nothing here. We can handle 10+ inches of snow without any major closures.

The only major closure this year was NYC a month or so ago. And that was only because the plow workers wanted to make a point and used it as a protest. They plowed slower or not at all.

Yea snow may make some outdoor stuff unbearable, or make walking to the event a pain but overall I dont think they will have any problems.

I recall this being discussed on TT when Arlington was first awarded this years SB. That area is just too prone to ice storms at this time of year, and with sprawl similar if not worse than Houston, it makes getting around very difficult.

We're across the river from upstate/western NY we've got 25-35 cm (10-14in) and most of the schools in the area are closed and those that are opened have cancelled buses. And a lot of the businesses downtown have closed and have employees working at/from home if possible.

If the Super Bowl were in Toronto this week, there would be some complications for some things (events, travel, etc), I'd imagine. And it wouldn't be as fun or as easily navigable as New Orleans this time of year

But this is also the only such day this year so far - so it's not very common that these measures have to be taken. And I'd guess everything returns close to normal tomorrow.

Are the golf courses, beachs, etc. open today ? Right, and it's sunny and 77 in Miami right now. That's why SBs should be in places like south FLA or San Diego, or Arizona.

In terms of transportation, you are acccurate. Dallas/Fort Worth in general and Arlington specially are terrible cold weather transportation cities. Arlington has no public transportation (largest city in america), so once roads get iced the city/area is pretty much screwed. Overall, we don't normally get ice at this level or for this long. Usually a couple of one or two inch snow storms with a litle ice versus multiple days well below freezing (I mean the wind chill is at zero) where there is no chance for a thaw out.

Yeah, misread the overall point of permanent cold weather option. We agree as we have seen that even "southern" cities like Dallas and Atlanta still have too high a chance of weather issues. and just think last week there were two or three days in the 70s as the high.

It's the ice in DFW that makes everything bad. DFW cam hamdle snow, but not ice. It's a blessing in disguise though, because everyone will be ready to party on Friday and Saturday night. When the good weather rolls in (then back to snow/ice on Monday).

I'm going to lmao if the 2014 Super Bowl gets hit with a blizzard. That effects the most most important part of the event - the game itself. I'm almost hoping it happens. Makes for good drama and sports talk radio!

And, IMO, that's what the NFL deserves for continually blowing off McNair/Houston with regards to hosting another Super Bowl, beyond the obligatory 2003 game for building Reliant Stadium and McNair spending $700 million for a franchise.

They postponed an Eagles game this year because of a blizzard. What would they do with a Super Bowl if the conditions are as bad as they are right now?

I know right. Houston should have hosted another Super Bowl by now. The fans loved it here in 2004, with Main Street acting like an extra wide Bourbon Street. See, in DFW, everything is so spread out that people don't know where to party. In Houston, everyone just went Downtown. Doesn't hurt that the game was awesome.

The point is nobody can handle ice, and places like DFW and ATL have ice more often than up north where it's more likely to be all snow in the dead of the winter when they play the SB because it's usually too cold and too dry to have anything but snow.

I hope someone brings a staple gun if ever the Texans play a game on an ice covered field
