My 7 round texan draft

First the texans trade their 13th and 73rd over all to the Cowboys for the 11th pick.

11th - OLB Shawne Merriman, Maryland
Finally gives the texans an impact pass rusher with ability to stand up in pass coverage

47th - WR Roddy White, UAB
White will take over for Bradford and be a nice complement to Johnson

78th - DT Ronald Fields, Mississippi St
A big body who will be a good back up if Payne goes down

108th - G Evan Mathis, Alabama
A big guard who will take over for Wiegert when the time comes

142th - TE Joel Dreessen, Colorado ST
A tight end who can block and catch, who will be given time to develop

173th - C Eric Ghiaciuc, Central Michigan
Casserly has shown that he is no afraid to look at small school o linemen and this guy is a gem

204th - T Nick Kaczur, Toledo
A good tackle who is a great value here and will provide excelent depth

206th - QB Chris Rix, Florida St
Keeping up the tradition of drafting a QB, when he's hot, he's hot and when he's cold, he's cold

I like your picks a lot...The only questionable things I see are trading the 73rd instead of the 78th and taking Roddy White in the 2nd, who will likely be gone by the early second round at the latest...Overall, good job though...I'd be very happy with those results...

I figured that White would slip into the second since at least once a year a couple of 1st round projections fall to the second, and this guy has almost no buzz around compared to all the other WR and Matt Jones. The reason why I traded the 73 was that I doubt that the boys would want their own 3rd back and the 78th was only 5 picks away.

Now that you mention it, there really is no buzz around Sherrod White...Whenever people mention the top WRs, his name is always left off of the list...There will probably be a few prospects who nobody thought would be available at 47 that slide down the boards, and he may very well be one of them...

I have no good reason for it, but I just don't like Merriman or for that matter Pollard @ 13. Merriman looks like a dice game and Pollard needs to be an end in a 4-3. JMHO. Overall though I liked your mock great job. White , Feilds, Mathis and Dressen would all look real good on the roster. Great value picks.

13 Demarcus Ware/Shawne Merriman (in that order of availability) Ware's stock is way high and predicted 11-15th pick. We have only the cowboys to worry about.

78 Jovan Haye - D line help we so desperately need.

108 Tab Perry WR UCLA - could be a Steal of a pick, if he pans out. Big and fast needs better route running and next year could challenge for #2 spot if all goes well. If he doesnt not much lost at 108.

124 Ray Willis OT FSU - Barron may have the tools Willis has the heart he can provide depth as wel as possibly work his way into the lineup some day.

173 Tony Curtis TE Port ST. - Tight End who can catch and zone block adequately former basketballer with some speed and acceleration. Could atleast be a solid #2 TE

204 Eric Guiaciuc G Cen Mich. - will come along slowly and be our center of the future. May have a year at RG before that happens.

206 Dan Orlovsky QB Conn - Guys got an arm but no legs. 50 yard passes are fluid and effortless.

Anyone ever been to the restaurant downtown named Timmy Chang's? Bad neighborhood IMO, but a colleague took me and it is some good fried chicken at a very low price. The Bullet Proof- Barred windows scare me though.

Good job, but only two defensive players, and three Olineman and a TE? I don't see that. I think this will be a defensive draft again. I think a bare min of two of our top four picks are defensive players, and it wouldn't totally shock me if it were 4 out of 4. I would like to see us draft a corner, NT, DE, OLB, and ILB at some point in this draft. On offense, I wouldn't be hurt if a RB, WR, and either tackle or C were drafted. That would give us our 8 picks. Of course, it is doubtful we end up with 8. Something tells me we are trading again...not sure which way, but stay tuned for sure!

It's Timmy Chan's, not Chang's...Best wings and rice in town...I don't get being scared of bullet proof, barred up windows, though...Shouldn't that make you feel safe?

Well i figured that there are not a lot of defensive play makers in this draft and there a quite a few o linemen who look like they could develop into good starters if given time.

Instead of trading up to 11 we could move a pair of 3rd's for another low second to someone like the niners. That way we could get three high quality rookies.

If we were to package both of our third rounders for a second rounder, it would be a late second rounder...I think a good trade partner would be a team like Green Bay, who has a lot of holes to fill and have two second rounders to work with...

Personally i think the first round is going to have more trades than wall street.

I think that teams in the lower half only need one of the pieces that will go in the top ten of this years draft.

I think Minnesota will move to #2 and give miami its 1st round picks so they can get Braylon Edwards. They have solidified their defense via free agency so i see them only drafting key pieces to a championship puzzle. A play making wideout.

Carolina will do the same but have to watch Minnesota and take the WR they dont take which probably will be Mike Williams. I think Minnesota would rather have Edwards even if Williams is ranked higher

I think we sit back this year and watch and we get either merriman or ware. whoever Dallas does not draft.

I think alot of teams will WANT to trade, but they will all be wanting to trade down. The teams picking early may not see enough value in the players available to give them the high dollars that a high pick commands. The question is, will the lower picking teams see value to move up when everybody is trying to move down? With the quality of players pretty even after the first 5-10 players, I suspect that this may be a draft that will be very difficult to move around in, unless you are looking to move up. At this point, I see it as a buyers market and the price of moving up could be alot less than it has been. That would be good for us to move up and get DJ or Merriman, but may make it very difficult to move down and gain picks. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Texans select-

1st - Demarcus Ware OLB, Troy. 6040 251 lbs. timed under 4.60/40. playmaker with the most upside & bpa @ #13. his above average lateral movement & abiltiy to drop into coverage a plus. a player three weeks ago I would have never considered a prime canditate for the Texans this high but by all accounts Demarcus has blown away coaching staffs & scouts at his private workouts & moved into leading position as Dunta Robinson did last year. there are several other viable options, like Carlos Rogers, Thomas Davis & Alex Barron but with the depth at corner, development of Wand & Earl, Ware is a blue chip OLB prospect of which there are only a couple.

2nd - Rosco Parrish WR, Miami. 5096 168 lbs. 4.39/40. forget his size & focus on what compliments AJ as a true #2 WR. a lot of these guys I see bantered about are more true #1's like a Troy Williamson. the last time I checked the Texans have a pretty good #1 already so why not find a playmaker with speed and skills that could come in and start immediatly has a true #2? its pure coincidence they where teamates at Miami but hey that does'nt hurt does it? other than Mark Clayton I feel that Rosco is the best #2 slot WR in the draft and should be there @ the 47th pick. also if they drop I would have to consider David Baas, Khalif Barnes & Fabian Washington.

3a - Stanley Wilson CB, Stanford. 5116 186 lbs. 4.39/40. deep class of db's offer a chance to still get a NFL caliber of talent, big, fast corner with the luxury to develop behind Glenn, Robinson & Faggins. has 1st round ability but is still raw and needs to learn the position but should address a long term need. also should still be on the board and would be a reflection of prior picks.

3b - Matt McCoy ILB, San Diego State. 5116 234 lbs. 4.60/40. the future starting ILB along with Greenwood, Matt played OLB in College but I'm projecting him to move inside. he has excellent mechanics, covers well, lateral movement side to side and wraps up & pusnishes the carrier. of all the draftees I really like this pick here, with OLB's Babin & Ware and ILB's Greenwood & McCoy this would be the strength of the Texans defense, young, talented & fit for the 3-4 system.

4th - Sione Pouha NT, Utah. 6033 325 lbs. 5.05/40. massive, mature (26 yrs old) physical proto-type 3-4 nose could start as a rookie should the need arise (Payne's recovery & injury history). this is a need that I feel cannot be ignored and could actually save the season for the Texans should unfortunate injury once again befall them. Game is strength, push & power occuping two blockers and collapsing the pocket from interior.

5th - Claude Terrell OG, New Mexico. 6022 344 lbs. 5.42/40. his forte is pass blocking with his short wide build, thick butt and legs. good mobility and feet should project as a future starter as RG. this seems the way the Texans do things and that is develop thier lineman, example Pitts & Wand. with all the money tied up in Weigert & McKinney I give them at least one more year, two outside, so this is where I look to see the Texans pick their future replacements and give them time to learn the system & develop.

6th - Frank Gore RB, Miami. yes this is the 2nd Hurricane on my list (you know they have talent) the only reason Frank falls this far is his injury history with both acls torn, the Texans have proven impervious to similar injurys and take a chance on him if he falls this far. I like this pick more than the Hollings 2nd round pick of a year ago, but as we learned there is some boom or bust involved. runs between the tackles and is perfect in zone blocking scheme.

7th - Junius Costin C, No Carol. A&T. 6026 310 lbs. 5.16/40. who know's by this pick but I don't really think we need another QB. here is another developmental project to replace McKinney in a couple of years. he plays at a small school so is a little unkown, has played tackle & guard as well. right handed and can snap in the shotgun, great size and mobile a solid 7th rd pick.

The writing is on the wall in Minnesota. They've fixed thier D. If they move up...it'll be for one of the power backs, Brown or Benson. The draft is loaded with twos and slot guys at the WR spot. And the fact is they were just as consistant with Moss as without him. Their o-line is set. They get a power back behind Cullpepper, they go to the championship game. The Moss era is over. JMHO.
