I don't know how I ended up there but yesterday I was bumpin' around the 'net and came across Houston Gamblers videos. It was awesome reliving some of that. Showed the last Gamblers TD ever (Jim Kelly to Richard Johnson), the last Gamblers points ever (Toni Fritsch FG), and then there was the last few seconds of the Gamblers existance. A playoff game, down by 2 with time running down. With 10 seconds left and no timeouts, Kelly tries to get a pass off to get closer FG range but bounces it incomplete. Fritsch comes on to attempt a 49 yard FG to win and advance to the next round. He has the distance but it goes wide left, Gamblers lose and never play another down of football again. I thought to myself, see, even the Gamblers couldn't escape whatever curse this town called Houston has. Rockets aside, nothing ever seems to end in glory here. It's always a last second missed FG or biggest lead ever blown, or something that ends in disappointment and heartbreak. Pisses me off sometimes, especially when I see the runs that a town like Boston has. Celtics, Pats, Sox, all winning championships out the wazoo in the last decade or so. Maybe Reliant Park is sitting on an old indian burial ground or something, I don't know.

Two championships between three major sports teams with 120 years existance between them ?! Worse yet , only three other appearances from said teams in championship games - two by the Rockets in 80 and 86 and the World Series appearance by the Stro's in 2005. EDIT: And who can forget UH Vs UNC in the (84?) NCAA's ? ... I was already sick , now Im sicker. JB Pass the liquor.

Do the Comets count as a good thing, or does the failure of the Hilton regime nullify everything?

The Comets are entirely a non-factor in this. When Dallas holds up their Lombardi's and Pittsburgh holds up theirs as well can any Houstonian hold up the Houston Comets and not feel deep humiliation that the closest this city has ever come to dominating a professional sports league was the WNBA? Houston is just a have-not city. There's nothing to be done about it but understand and accept that we're the also ran. Without cities like ours and teams like the Houston Texans the real franchises who accept nothing less than excellence wouldn't have anybody to dominate.
Oilers, at least they had a little pride about them. Two AFL titles, then later Bum and Earl gave them some semblance of pride. The Texans have no pride. they have no dignity. They are nothing but a pre-fab franchise conceived to fill a void in this market. They didn't put football back in Houston because Houston without football is somehow "unthinkable". They put football back in Houston because there are dollars here that aren't being spent on the NFL. The Texans are the kind of NFL team that the Walt Disney Corporation would put together to make another "Angels in the Endzone" movie, not the kind of team that serious competitors would assemble to challenge for a title. The Comets are the best we got here in H-Town and even mentioning them in the same conversation as real dynasties is embarrassing. No, the Comets don't count.

yeah, they do. Why, I just got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago mentioning how proud they were of 9 seasons of consecutive sellouts. And the ReliantWorld Gameday ExperienceŽ has been voted tops in the nation! And they are very proud of that, too.
*Herv whispers something relevant into DB's ear* ohhhhhhhhh! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Didn't know you meant on the field! ![]() Houston deserves a winner, but in the words of William Munny, "deserves got nothing to do with it." |

The one thing I've enjoyed about being and 40 year old fan compared to a kid is that I learned to respect many teams that used to be mortal enemies. Certain organizations just do things in a way that I enjoy seeing them year in and year out. The Steelers is one and the Packers another. Love beating them but enjoy how the teams are put together and how they do business.
