Default Texans Denied Interview with Cowboys Herring

Not sure if this is elsewhere.

Texans Interested In Herring; Cowboys Too?

While it’s been reported for a while that new Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips would have some interest in some of his former defensive assistants, it might be easier said than done.

Phillips and the Texans have apparently asked for permission to speak with linebackers coach Reggie Herring, but have been denied. Herring’s contract does not expire in the upcoming weeks and will be under contract for 2011. The same goes for safeties coach Brett Maxie, who has been rumored as a possible fit in Houston, although the Texans have yet to seek permission.

But since the Cowboys weren’t ready to let Herring interview, it’s likely the same answer would be given for Maxie.

And this might just be a timing issue. The Cowboys may indeed be looking to make some defensive changes, but haven’t yet figured out what. Until then, it seems logical to hang onto the assistants for now.

Does the means the Texans might have to do a legitimate job search now?

Singletary for LB coach; Glenn for DB coach

I'm not usually big on former players as coaches but Glenn I would endorse and I bet he would take the job. I watched him coaching Dunta during his tenure (you could see it constantly on the sideline with hand gestures, etc.) and he clearly was an intellectual CB. He worked the refs, he worked the other DB's. He looks like the real deal as a player becoming a coach.

Glenn might not have any interest in coaching.

Make him an offer he can't refuse. Or, in a Texans tradition, an offer neither he nor the fans can understand.

I like the idea of Singletary as a position coach. His competence does not appear to scale over a team, but I think he would do terrific manning a 5-6 man group.
