Default Yahoo; McNair: Bad Season will make Kubiak Better

Link
Quote:
HOUSTON – Texans owner Bob McNair thinks Gary Kubiak will learn from the many low points of this season and be a better coach because of them.

Kubiak will return for a sixth season in Houston, but the team fired four defensive assistants on Monday, including coordinator Frank Bush. The Texans (6-10) lost eight of their last 10 games and had the league's 30th-ranked defense.

McNair said in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that he kept Kubiak mainly because he felt like the players continued to work hard and stay united as the season unraveled.

"One of Gary's strengths, and one of the things that influenced me is that, in spite of the tough period we went through, Gary was able to hold the team together," McNair said. "That's the sign of a good coach, because it's very difficult to do that.

"I was in the locker room, I was on the practice field, I saw how we played," McNair said. "He had everything under control the whole time."
Fans for weeks had urged McNair to fire Kubiak, whose contract runs through the 2012 season. McNair said fans "are no more frustrated than me," but also pointed to the job Kubiak did last season when Houston finished 9-7 for its first winning record.

"I don't think anybody was calling for his head after that season," McNair said. "This year, he has gone through some very difficult times and I think he's a better coach now than he was then because of those experiences. I don't think he went from being a good coach in one year to being a bad coach."

McNair said a major overhaul of the staff would've been too risky, especially with the possibility of a lockout looming in the spring. McNair wanted to preserve some stability, in case preparations for next season are delayed by labor negotiations.

"Continuity makes it easier to be ready, as opposed to if you completely changed your systems, and the players weren't around to be taught the new system," McNair said. "And then you come back to play and you're trying to start out with a new system, and the players aren't properly prepared. That could be a very difficult situation, and we certainly don't want to find ourselves in that boat."

McNair also acknowledged that fired Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is a top candidate to become Houston's next defensive coordinator, but added that he's "one of several." McNair wants a new coordinator in place within two weeks.

Phillips is interviewing with the Texans on Wednesday, his mother, Debbie, told the AP on Tuesday night. The team would not confirm that Phillips had an interview scheduled.

Phillips did not immediately return a phone message.

Bush and his predecessor, Richard Smith, were first-time defensive coordinators, and McNair and Kubiak both said they want someone with more experience.

McNair said he's happy with the progress of the offense under Kubiak, who was Denver's offensive coordinator from 1995-2005. This year, the Texans finished third in total yards (386.6 per game) and produced the NFL's leading rusher in Arian Foster.

"It's clear that our offense is one of the top offenses," McNair said. "Clearly, our problem was with our defense and we had to ask ourselves what it would take to improve that."

The Texans are 37-43 under Kubiak, and the franchise has yet to make the playoffs in nine seasons. McNair vowed to make radical changes if the team falls short again in 2011.

"The team's got to go out and show that we made the right decision," he said. "We won't know whether I've made the right decisions until we go out and play this next year and see how we do. Hopefully, it'll be the right decision. If it isn't, well, we'll have to go from there.

"I've got more on the line with this team than anyone," he said. "I'm committed to bringing a champion to Houston. I didn't make the commitment to just have a winning team. We want a team that plays at a championship level, and we haven't gotten there."

Seesh Bottom Line Bob (BLB). You should of kept Dom Capers. He would of been a genius after going 2-14. For that matter, you should have kept Casserly. He would have been a frickin' drafting Einstein after picking Heath Schuler, HWSNBN, Travis Johnson, etc.

Wake up BLB. Get outside your cocoon and meet some real people. Lots of people wanted Kubiak fired after 9-7. Those of us who saw that that was as far as he could take the team and that no matter the record the team was poorly coached.

The more Kubiak loses the better he gets. Yes, I can see that. Totally understandable. Why we all couldn't see this before is the mystery.

One of the least penalized.... one of the best offenses..... one of the better defenses....

yet they were poorly coached.

Many people here would take Jeff Fischer for their head coach right now, & Kubiak has done as well or better the last two years.

But our team is poorly coached.

Where to post this? I guess here.

Various things from the local media tonight about Wade; some stuff from McNair.

Phillips is lead guy though hasnt interviewed. Will fly to Houston tomorrow morning. McNair: We'll evalute our scheme. Not automatic we'll go to 3-4. New DC will have to look at our personnel.
----------------------------------------------
McNair: This season was an intolerable situation. We started well. We won games no one thought we could. Our D was suspect. Players recognize what issues are. There is a sense of urgency.
----------------------------------------------
FOX26: McNair speaking on Phillips and other things: The fact he was a head coach is good. We like that, just like when we had Mike Sherman around. I'm not happy with 6-10 record but wont let emotions get in way of business decisions. Some people feel to be upset, you have to be emotional and jump up and down. Thats not my nature. I'm disappointed. But optimistic because I'm around this team all the time. Go back a year, we were 9-7, people werent saying he was a bad coach last year. He hasnt changed in a year from good to bad. If he has changed, he hasn't changed for the worse. This isnt a popularity contest. This is not a poll or a survey. If it was, we'd have Reggie Bush instead of Mario.
-----------------------------------------------
From FOXSportsHouston.com: McNair says Rick Smith will continue to be GM. That doesn't mean that we're not evaluating the job that’s being done. We’ve had some drafts that have been outstanding and we've had some drafts that have been mediocre. We want to eliminate those mediocre drafts and make sure that they are all outstanding."
-----------------------------------------------

ABC 13: Bob Allen: Wade will formally interview tomorrow. Announcment could come soon after. He wants to come back to Houston. Bob/Gary want him. Bob McNair: He has a terrific record. Record among active HC's when he was coaching was 3rd. He's been a good coach and DC. He has done it everywhere and has had a solid D.
-----------------------------------------------

And lastly,

Bob McNair one-on-one with Randy McIlvoy of KPRC Local 2

Most frustrating for you as an owner? Where does this rank?

Most definitely. It's the sorta thing I've never seen before. I tell our coaches we go into every game expecting to win but we know we can't win them all. We want to be close and have opportunity to win. This year, we had 8 or 9 games that were close and opportunity to win and only won 3. I've never seen that happen before. Normally, we've always won more than our share of close games that I've been involved in.

I guess the way some of these ended --in your wildest dreams you wouldnt have seen a hail mary or some of these finishes, etc.

No. Unbelievable but thats the way it is. I dont believe in luck. If we could have done a better job, we could have turned those around the other way. So thats on us. I don't attribute it to anything else. I never seen it happen like that.

Talk about the process and decision. Fans confused on why there wasnt a change made. You felt Gary was the right man. But 5 years no playoffs, regression this year. Talk about the process.

Last year, we were 9-7 and thought we might be in the playoffs there and if teams played their regulars, we probably would have been. At that time, everyone thought Gary was a great coach and he was wonderful. This year, he has learned a lot. He is a better coach by virtue of what he went through. He is a better coach than last year. If he was good last year and better this year, I dont see that he is inadequate as a coach. So for us, real question was to look at the team and to see what happened to us and to find out the problem. If you analyze it, we had the number three offense. We scored enough points to win. Our ST wasnt as good as in the past but that is due to injuries -- injuries took guys off ST. Joe Marciano has always had good ST for us and everywhere he has been. Feel like that was a one year thing. Our D finished 30th. When giving up 28-29 points a game, you cant win. Thats the bottom line. It wasnt that everything was broken. Just one thing and thats what needs to be addressed. We know Gary got a great offensive mind. Thats his focus. Thats his perspective and what he loves. Now we need to get a D coordinator who is like that on the other side of the ball. Someone who has a proven record. Thats what we're looking for. If we can find that person and have them work with Gary, we'll turn this around quickly. Not a long term thing. I'm convinced we can do that. We also need some players on D.

WHen you made this decision and told him he is coming back, did you say or is it you saying we need to get there next year?

No. You dont have to do that. Gary knows this year was an intolerable situation. We're not gonna put up with this. We're gonna do whatever it takes. Ive been through tough times. Not the first time I saw an ox in the ditch. We're gonna get in there with the ox. We're not gonna stand up on the side and debate of who can come get that ox out of the ditch, we're gonna do it. We'll take whatever steps we need to to get this D straightened out. We got some great D players. We made a real strategic mistake as an organization going completely young in the secondary. We had the opportunity to pick up a veteran as we went along, we looked at several. Some D coaches said we didnt need them and thought we could work with these guys we had. We went along with that. We all participated in that and it was a mistake that cost us. We need some vet leadership in that secondary. We'll do that in FA. We'll look at other young D players in secondary in the draft.

Part of coaching is evaluating your players and knowing what physical attributes, skills, and intangible qualities you need to make your scheme work. The Texans failed in all these aspects on D: they lacked proper coaching and lacked proper evaluation.

I understand McNair not wanting to toss Kubiak aside because the he trusted the opinions of the guys he hired, but here's to hoping Kubiak learned a lesson about hiring staff. As LZ has been pointing out, no one in the organization understood how to construct a defense. Here's to hoping Wade Phillips can right that ship.

Kubiak was a great coach last year? And is a better coach this year? Can't see that he is inadequate after becoming better than great?

I've seen pretzel logic before. But, this is unbelievable.

You have put up with this. You are putting up with this. You are tolerating this.

McNair just needs to shut-the-hell-up for the rest of the offseason. Stop it. There's no logical justification for what you've done. It's your ball and you can do with it as you please. Just stop insulting fans with your mind-numbing blather.

He is a better coach than last year. If we was good last year and better this year, I dont see that he is inadequate as a coach. So for us, real question was to look at the team and to see what happened to us and to find out the problem.
So why did we fire Frank Bush again? He was a big part of that 9-7.... I think we finally got into the plus t.o. ratio in Gary's whole tenure here. We had a respectable defense, 13th over all, 10th in rushing, 17 against the pass......

But he's a bad coach, so is Johnny Holland, David Gibbs, & that other guy....... but Kubiak isn't?

We all participated in that and it was a mistake that cost us. We need some vet leadership in that secondary. We'll do that in FA. We'll look at other young D players in secondary in the draft.
Well hell... after hearing that, sounds like Rick Smith is safe as well.

& we're going to get a veteran corner in FA.

Yes, Rick is safe. Rick had some "outstanding drafts", some mediocre drafts according to Bob.
