Default Hard, Sad Look (at the team and BOOB McNair)

First: As objectively as you can, please place the Texans in one of the categories below. Consider this: how many of the hallmarks of a “Great Team” do the Texans have?

“Great Teams” (or “Great Franchises”)1. The top franchises of the NFL are (in no particular order): Patriots, Steelers, Baltimore and Indy. I will call these the "Great Teams." (Maybe I should say “Great Franchises”, but you get my point).
2. The "Great Teams" do not try to be good enough to play in close games, and hope to make enough plays to come out with a win. Good Teams do not play “not to lose.” Rather, Great Teams push for excellence, strive to stomp the other team, and ultimately remove doubt from the outcome.
3. Great Teams have proven leaders – in Ownership, GM, Coaches, and/or Players. The Rooneys, Krafts, Irsay, Bellicek, Ozzie Smith, Manning, Brady, Lewis, Polamalu, Harrison. The Leaders hire well, draft well and play well.

“Good Teams”
There are a bunch of “Good Teams” in the NFL, many of whom are trying to get to become “Great Teams”. The Atl, NO, Green Bay, Philly, NYG, NYJ’s, SD of the league, they all have elements of the leadership and attitude of the great teams, and are actively, visibly trying to reach that level. You can see it in how they push for excellence, play to win, stomp the other team. They “flash” excellence and an educated NFL fan can make the case that the Good Teams may make it to the next level.

“Mediocre Teams”
After that, there are some Mediocre Teams. They’re sort of trying to reach the Good and Great Team level, but aren’t particularly good at it. They’ve shown “flashes of success” in recent years in reaching the playoffs, but can’t get to or stay at the next level. These are the Tennessee’s, Chicago, Cincy, KC, and even Arizona’s of the league. But, the Mediocre Teams don’t accept their station in the League. No, they’re trying to get better and aren’t afraid of making significant moves – clashing with VY, obtaining Cutler/Peppers, firing Marvin Lewis (probably), hiring an unproven Haley, dumping Leinart. There’s often more motion than results, but they’re trying.

The “Dregs”
And there are the Dregs - the teams that other teams laugh at. The teams that people make fun of. We’re talking about the Detriot’s, St Louis’, Buffalo’s, Washington’s and Clevelands. Many have Bad Owners and hire Bad GM’s and Bad Coaches and make poor draft and FA decisions. We’re talking Matt Millen, Chan Gailey, Dan Snyder, Albert Haynesworth. A couple of them seem to want to do better (e.g. Wash and CLE) and take steps in that direction, like CLE firing mangini and Snyder signing everyone under the sun. But they fail because they lack the hallmarks of the “Great Teams”.

My conclusion: We are closer to the Dregs than Mediocrity. Zero leadership at the Owner, GM and Coach level. Risk averse. Unwilling to pull the triggers to reach for the brass ring.

Kubiak’s freaking stated goal is to play well enough to have a chance to make plays to win in the fourth quarter. His freaking stated goal is to be mediocre. He handed key jobs to friends.

The Owner retained Kubiak despite this and 5 years of 5-7 starts, and despite having world class Coaches available.

Our GM is more like that mom that shops TJ Maxx to find a pair of designer jeans for 20 bucks, than Warren Buffett acquiring a major position in Conoco Phillips.

On the field, we have a bunch of boy scouts that lose with class. What winning edge they may have had has been dulled by the pathetic management and repetitive losing. Losing doesn’t seem to hurt as much when that’s all you know.

Finally: The owner of the Texans must be called BOOB McNair. I do not enjoy personal insults -- except calling Tracy McGrady - Stacey McLady on Clutchfans.net. I find that they detract from a discussion. However, in this case, it may be that a personal assault and shaming BOOB may be the only way to get Mr. Knockers to do right by the fans and someday remove his head from his ass. So, for now on, I implore all Texans fans to call him BOOB McNair or Uncle BOOB. And yes, BOOB must be in all caps for obvious reasons.

I really kind of agree here with Mr. Butt, or do you prefer Toxic?

I would put St. Louis into the mediocre teams based upon your definitions, which I think are pretty good but all in all, I think your teams are pretty much correct, in that you are looking at the orgamizations as a whole and not the year to year or week to week results. This is big picture thinking.

And I would without a doubt put the Texans into the Dregs. How can you not? One barely winning team in 9 yrs, and no playoffs, with a clueless owner and failed leadership at every level. Not even one stinking game in the playoff in 9 freaking years? Unless you are BOOB Mcnair himself, that is the very definition of Dregs.

2011 should see the first blackouts in Texans' history.

That's the only thing that'll get BOOB's attention.

I created it when I was changing diapers for my first child.

Toxic would be great. Mr. Butt seems so formal for a message board.

I don't think I would put either Baltimore or Indy in the great franchise category. Baltimore would go in the good category because they have been competitive most seasons however they are not in the elite status.

The Colts are not a great franchise. They have a great franchise QB. Put Peyton on the Titans and you would be calling Bud Adams bunch a great franchise.

I know this will sound like a homer statement however I would put the Giants in over both of those teams. The Giants have won a Super Bowl in the last 3 decades (the only team to do that) and have pretty strong ownership and stability.

However I know none of that was the point of your post. As far as the Texans go, of course they are the "Dregs". Actually if there were a category below that they probably should go there. All of those teams you mentioned that are in the "Dregs" it could be argued are ahead of the Texans.

Detroit: They beat some good teams down the stretch and some of their young talent is starting to pay off. They also can draft defensive lineman that show up for games. So far their coaching is looking good. This is a team that truly look to be on the right track, not Bob's right track either.

St. Louis: These guys are way ahead of the Texans. They have a good (potential great HC) and a good (potential great) young QB. If they can land some WRs that can catch the ball they will be legit.

Cleveland: They are ahead of the Texans simply because they fired their HC. The Texans won't get to that until 2012. I think Colt is going to be a strong QB also. They have some pieces in place so if they land a good coach they will be on the upswing.

Buffalo: I don't care for Chan Gaily so maybe the Texans are up on them. They also don't have the players the Texans have.

Washington: OK, their owner is worse than McNair. I would not have anything to be optimistic about if I where a Skins fan. I would probably put the Texans over these guys also.

As hard as it is to believe there is still a waiting list for season tickets. Its a strange phenomenon, people are afraid they will miss out on having tickets when the Texans finally achieve something yet its gives the impression they are content.

I'm no Redskins fan but I have to disagree with you here. Dan Snyder may not be the best owner in the league but I dont think you you can say that he isnt trying to do every he can to win. Even if his moves dont always pan out.

Bringing back a hall of fame coach, firing jim zorn, the free agent signings are all pretty bold moves to at least show that he is trying.

I have'nt seen Mcnair do any of this, he is a joke compaired to Snyder. The Redskins future is looking better than ours in my opinion. At the very least they know that if shanahan doesnt work out they'll fire him, and wont wait 7 years to do it. Can you really say that about Mcnair?
