...... for being the 2nd coach in NFL history to be retained for a 6th season with no current playoffs on his record.
The other coach? Bart Starr because of what he did for the franchise as a player.

To be fair, this is looking like a tri-fecta of failure - let's add Smith to the equation...

Hire Eric Mangini next year, and we will have a whole boatload of fail in this organization.

See below: On Sunday, at the season finale against Jacksonville, the Texans will host their annual, fun-filled Fan Appreciation Day. The team will give away a whopping $15,000 worth of merchandise, gift certificates and prizes to make you feel appreciated. Yep, for a sold-out stadium, the appreciation of your loyalty amounts to less than $5 a person, which would get you little more than half a beer at a Reliant Stadium concession stand. You feel appreciated? Sunday will be the Texans' 90th game at Reliant (72 in the regular season). Each game in the franchise's sad history has been sold out. One could see why you might be taken for granted. You keep showing up. Until I saw the information on Fan Appreciation Day, I was prepared to take a stance against a planned fan rally demanding that head coach Gary Kubiak be fired. Not against the rally, exactly, just against the mentality that would drive such a gathering and its relative waste of time, especially considering the growing sentiment that owner Bob McNair will not make a change at head coach following another losing season. Then I saw how the Texans plan to honor you for your support and wondered how many of you lucky rascals would win a Whataburger coupon or free admission to the Houston Zoo on Fan Appreciation Day. That isn't a shot at one of the world's best fast-food burgers, and a day at the zoo can be priceless, but would winning either of them make you feel appreciated by the Texans? Since the NFL became the league as we know it — the 1970 merger with the AFL — only once has a coach led a team for five seasons with a single winning campaign and had zero playoff appearances and been invited back for a sixth year. The Green Bay Packers did that out of appreciation for the career service of Bart Starr, who led the team to five NFL championships as its quarterback. Kubiak isn't Starr. The Texans are prepared to bring back Kubiak for a sixth year under the same circumstances out of appreciation for … for what exactly? Hiring Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator would show just how much McNair appreciates Kubiak, not how much he appreciates the fans. Telling Kubiak whom to hire as his defensive coordinator comes about five years and two poor coordinator hires too late, don't you think? OK, fine, Bob. If you're going to bring Kubiak back, then give the fans a little more than the Son of Bum. In lieu of winning seasons, playoff appearances and the like, step up your game when it comes to Fan Appreciation Day. Why couldn't you draw names for some lucky fan to take the field for a play on defense? Preferably at cornerback, but anywhere would be just fine. You really think Tipsy Tom from the club level could do worse than Kareem Jackson or Jason Allen for one play? And since the Texans went pee wee football on the Broncos and tried to run a couple of defensive plays with only 10 men on the field last week, Tipsy could stand on the sideline and run in whenever he noticed the team was short a player. Any ***** can count to 11, right? Hey, you could call it the 11th Man program and it wouldn't even infringe on the Aggies' 12th Man copyright. You make the call Maybe you should allow a fan to call a defensive play during the game, or better yet borrow that breakfast diner menu Kubiak carries on the sideline to pick out an offensive play. "Let's run Grand Slam Right with scrambled eggs, extra bacon and a side of grits on two. Break!" How about putting up a spinning wheel at midfield at halftime with the stipulation that the unlucky Texans coach on whose face the needle landed would be let go on the spot? Round and round it goes, where it stops, nobody knows. The line for fans to get a lottery ticket for a chance to spin the wheel would stretch to Pearland. Speaking of Wheel of Fortune, how about handing over the checkbook so a fan could buy a vowel, a cornerback and a defensive tackle. Another fan could win the right to hold the red challenge flag. His or her mission would be to keep Kubiak from throwing it on the field when he has absolutely no chance of getting a call overturned. Give another fan a working headset for the final two minutes of the first half to help call timeouts, and another a Bible for the final two minutes of the game. Not that we believe God is fixing games, but clearly the coaching staff isn't praying hard enough. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio credits Hail Marys for his team's win over you, and with what Tim Tebow just did to you, prayer can't hurt. Cast of thousands Perhaps you could hold open auditions for a fan to be given the job to stand at the podium after the loss and say, "It's on me." Thousands would want to play the role of head coach. Come to think of it, Bob, my ideas that would show true fan appreciation wouldn't be necessary if you simply proved that mediocrity is unacceptable and hired a head coach to play the role of head coach. That's OK. Could you at least make sure the fans get free fries with those Whataburger coupons? |
