In the third quarter, right after Troy Smith threw another pick, they showed Singletary and Smith yelling at each other. Bad. Had to be broken up before it escalated. Soon after, they made a change and put Alex Smith in the game.

Singletary looked confused the whole game, and it looks like he has lost the team.

He's never been a DC. He's horrible with X's and O's, and unless he learns more about that, I hope we never see him as a coordinator with the Texans.

Mike Singletary was fired when 49ers returned to practice facility this evening, Jed York just told me. Jim Tomsula takes over as interim.

Rah rah guy with no clue of how to run a team. His spats with both QBs were embarrassing and shuffling them in and out were disastrous.

Tough/motivational guy stuff loses its luster real quick if you lose.

York said money wasn't an object in this decision considering Singletary had two years remaining on his contract.

"Obviously, we didn't achieve the things we set out to achieve. We should be a playoff team," York said in the locker room. "We aren't a playoff team this year. Very disappointed about that. We need to figure out how we can get into the playoffs and how we can start competing for Super Bowls."

??? This can't be true, must be a typo or something. No team can get rid of a crummy coach with 2 years left on his contract and a possible lockout coming up!!! Don't those people in SF read John McClain???

Not that our way is the right way or anything, but how many head coaches have the 49ers had in the last 10 years? They aren't any closer than we are, even though they are in a much weaker division.

I'm all for firing Kubiak, but I feel at least we have a foundation to build on, A good coach, a few FAs, & we're in the play-offs. SF, I don't think so.

No one said it was impossible, just unlikely.

With McNair running the show, I still feel it is unlikely we'll have a head-coaching change.

Just like FA, there is a time (set by the league) when teams are allowed to start interviewing coaches who are currently employed. I don't know when that date is, but I'm sure it won't be before Jan 3rd.

There is no such rule preventing teams from talking to unemployed coaches. If McNair is (& I don't think he is) considering a coaching change, he may have already spoken to those people, or "people close to them"

Keeping Kubiak another week does nothing more than give McNair an opportunity to change his mind.

All these teams firing head coaches are replacing them with interim coaches right now. Nobody has fired their coach and replaced them with someone outside their organization. The firing of Singletary was confusing to me just because there is one week left in the season and I doubt they stay with Jim Tomsula for next year. You might as well fire Singletary next week IMO.

Another thing I would like to note: If Kubiak got fired today Dennison or Bush would take over as the interim. Bush is going to get fired after this year for having one of the weakest defenses to ever play, and Dennison is in his first year of being Offensive Coordinator. There's really no reason to fire him right now instead of next week when the season is over.

I go back and forth on this.

One day I think McNair is keeping Kubiak.

The next day I think he's already got Cowher locked up and waiting for the official day to arrive.

The third option is that he really isn't deciding on it until after the last whistle blows on Sunday, AND after perhaps a fairly long Sunday night of deliberating the fate of Gary Kubiak.

No way to know. Now, maybe if the announcement comes early Monday morning...that's an indication that he had pretty mcuh decided (in advance) that he was going to fire Kubiak. If the decision comes later in the day or a few days later, then I think he actually waited and decided well after the last game. Which, to me, would nullify any idea of him having contacted Cowher.

Then again, he has to slow-play the Kubiak firing and the subsequent Cowher announcement in order to sell it the "good guy" way that he's known for.

Lots of angles, IMO. But I think hiring Cowher is still TOO big of a move for the noob owner McNair.
